Dogs and Cats
The exact action in which Zonisamide for dogs and cats affects the body is unknown. However, Zonisamide is believed to block sodium channels in the brain, reducing nerve cell activity ensuring they don't fire irregularly. Zonisamide Capsules can also alter the calcium levels in the brain.
Don't give to pets who are allergic to similar medication or to sulfa drugs (sulfonamides). Additionally, consult with your veterinarian if your pet has liver or kidney disease. Do not give to breeding, pregnant or lactating pets. Keep Zonisamide out of the reach of children.
Zonegran
Zonisamide (Glenmark)
Zonisamide for dogs and cats is a sulfonamide drug and shouldn't be used in patients that are allergic to sulfa drugs. Due to the risk of birth defects, it should also be avoided in pregnant, breeding, or lactating pets. Talk to your veterinarian to determine the accurate dosage for your pet. It is crucial to follow their exact instructions when administering Zonisamide to your pet. Do not stop giving Zonisamide suddenly and make sure to be consistent when giving your pet Zonisamide. Missed doses may trigger a seizure in your pet. Zonisamide Capsules can increase the level of acid in your pet's blood (metabolic acidosis). If left untreated, metabolic acidosis can cause brittle or soft bones (osteoporosis, osteomalacia, osteopenia) and kidney stones. Metabolic acidosis can occur with or without symptoms.
Consult with your veterinarian if your pet is older or has liver or kidney disease.
