It decreases edema (swelling), inflammation, erythema (reddening of the skin) and pruritus, with associated scratching and excoriation. Its slow rate of evaporation allows for greater distribution and penetration to all parts of the ear. Synotic Otic Solution requires a prescription from your veterinarian.
Dogs
Each ml of the solution contains 0.01% fluocinolone acetonide and 60% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in propylene glycol and citric acid, which aid in decreasing swelling, inflammation, itching and erythema associated with ear infections.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: Because DMSO is known to enhance absorption of corticosteroids through the skin, SYNOTIC OTIC Solution is contraindicated wherever systemic corticosteroids would be dangerous. Adrenal suppression, weight loss and increased susceptibility to infections may be evidenced with the use of this drug, especially in overdosage. Preparations with DMSO should not be used in pregnant animals.
Synotic (Zoetis)
Fluocinolone acetonide, dimethyl sulfoxide
Synotic Otic Solution relieves the itching and inflammation associated with acute and chronic ear infections in dogs. It requires a prescription from your veterinarian. It is available as an 8 ml and 60 ml dropper bottle. Each ml contains 0.01% of fluocinolone acetonide and 60% of dimethyl sulfoxide.
Talk to your veterinarian about the history of ear infections in your dog. Tell your veterinarian if your dog is pregnant, lactating, or breeding. Let your veterinarian know if your pet has a hypersensitivity to the active ingredients in Synotic Otic Solution.
Use this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. If you don't understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Synotic Otic Solution should be administered to your dog's affected ear canal twice daily for a maximum of 14 days.
A transient, but mild, stinging sensation may be experienced by some pets when the solution is applied to denuded (bare skin) areas. The effect will disappear as healing progresses. A temporary increase in temperature of the area may also be noted. Corticosteroid therapy will generally cause a remission of signs of allergic origin. However, until the causative agent is identified and removed from your pet's environment, the condition may recur when therapy is terminated.
Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume a regular dosing schedule.
Adrenal suppression, weight loss and increased susceptibility to infections may be evidenced with the use of this drug, especially in overdosage. Therefore, care should be taken to assure that the recommended dosage is not exceeded. If an overdose is suspected, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Because DMSO is known to enhance absorption of corticosteroids through the skin, Synotic Otic Solution is contraindicated in animals with tuberculosis, hyperadrenocorticism, and peptic ulcers, and should be used with extreme caution in pregnant dogs.
Following administration, gentle external massage of the ear canal may aid in promoting an even distribution of the medication.
