What is Cytopoint?
Cytopoint is a biological therapy used to help dogs with atopic dermatitis (commonly called skin allergies). Signs of atopic dermatitis can include itching, scratching, licking, and rubbing at the skin around the underarms, paws, and around the face. When the itch is controlled, the damaged skin can heal, so that your dog can enjoy the fun things in life again. Cytopoint requires a prescription from your veterinarian. Cytopoint requires refrigeration and must be kept at refrigerator temperatures at all times. To ensure proper temperature, it requires overnight shipping at an additional cost.
NOTE: Syringes are sold separately. Use with 3cc (3 ml) Luer-Slip syringe with a 3/4-inch 22 G needle or 3 cc/mL 22g x 3/4 Needle.
- Fast, lasting itch relief
- Heals damaged skin after just 1 injection
- Keeps itch controlled for a month or longer
How does Cytopoint work?
Cytopoint targets and neutralizes interleukin (IL)-31, which is a key itch-causing cytokine in atopic dermatitis. After injection, Cytopoint begins working within the first 24 hours and delivers approximately four-to-eight weeks of relief. Cytopoint is different from traditional drugs that treat itching. It is a biological therapy - a type of non-pharmaceutical treatment that works like your dog's immune system. Cytopoint contains engineered antibodies very similar to a dog's natural antibodies, and in this case, have been designed to specifically target and neutralize one of the main proteins that send itch signals to a dog's brain. This helps minimize scratching so the skin has a chance to heal.
Cytopoint requires refrigeration. Overnight shipping is required and additional shipping charges are applicable. Cytopoint doesn't contain any preservatives so each vial is for single use only and should be discarded after the puncture. Cytopoint is intended for subcutaneous (under the skin) use only. When first opened, use entire contents of Cytopoint. Only sterilized syringes and needles should be used to administer Cytopoint. The product hasn't been tested in pregnant, lactating or breeding animals.
What is the most important thing I should know about Cytopoint?
Cytopoint should only be used by a veterinarian or under the direction of a veterinarian. The medicine should only be administered subcutaneously. It is best to monitor your dog's itch to see how well Cytopoint is working and to decide if/when your dog needs another injection. Furthermore, because Cytopoint is a biological therapy and not a drug, it is naturally broken down and recycled by the body. It is not eliminated from the body via the liver or kidneys like most pharmaceutical drug products, making Cytopoint a safe choice for your dog.
What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Cytopoint to my pet?
Tell your doctor if your dog is pregnant or lactating. The safe use of Cytopoint in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs has not been established.
How should Cytopoint be applied?
Cytopoint should be administered subcutaneously by or under the direction of a veterinarian.
What are the potential side effects of Cytopoint?
Hypersensitivity reactions such as anaphylaxis (allergic reaction), facial oedema (facial swelling), urticaria (hives) may occur in rare cases. In such cases, appropriate treatment should be administered immediately.
What happens if I miss giving a dose of Cytopoint?
One dose can last up to eight weeks, meaning your dog may be able to go as long as eight weeks between doses. Because every dog is different, your veterinarian, with your help, will monitor your dog during treatment and determine when the next dose is needed.
What happens if I overdose my pet on Cytopoint?
In case of adverse clinical signs after an overdose, your dog should be treated symptomatically.
What should I avoid while giving Cytopoint to my pet?
Cytopoint is not for use in pregnant, lactating, or breeding dogs.
What other drugs will affect Cytopoint?
Cytopoint can be used with many other commonly used medications and in dogs with other diseases. Talk to your veterinarian before giving your dog any other prescription or over the counter medications.
- Cytopoint is available in single-use 1 ml vials in four concentrations: 10, 20, 30, or 40 mg/vial.
- For dogs weighing under five pounds, aseptically (sterilely) withdraw .09 ml/lb (.2 ml/kg) from a single, 10 mg (Sky) vial and administer subcutaneously (under the skin). Discard any remaining product.
- For dogs weighing between five and forty pounds, aseptically withdraw the full volume of the appropriate vial and administer subcutaneously.
- For dogs weighing over forty pounds, a single dose requires a combination of vials. Prior to administration, collect the appropriate number of vials. Aseptically draw the full volume from each vial into one syringe and administer subcutaneously as a single injection.
Repeat administration every 4-8 weeks as needed in individual patients.
