How do NexGard^® PLUS CHEWS for Dogs work?

NexGard^® PLUS CHEWS are designed to prevent heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis and also to treat and control adult hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum, Ancylostoma braziliense, and Uncinaria stenocephala) and roundworm (Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina) infections in dogs and puppies aged 8 weeks and older. Additionally, these chews effectively eliminate adult fleas and are indicated for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis), as well as the treatment and control of ticks such as Ixodes scapularis (black-legged tick), Rhipicephalus sanguineus (brown dog tick), Dermacentor variabilis (American dog tick), and Amblyomma americanum (lone star tick) infestations for one month. NexGard^® PLUS chews act rapidly to kill fleas before they can lay eggs. In laboratory studies, afoxolaner, one of the active ingredients, started killing fleas just 4 hours after initial administration and demonstrated over 99% effectiveness at 8 hours. These chews provide robust protection against fleas and ticks for the entire month.

NexGard^® PLUS (afoxolaner, moxidectin, and pyrantel chewable tablets) contains afoxolaner, a member of the isoxazoline class, which has been associated with neurologic adverse reactions including tremors, ataxia, and seizures in dogs with or without a history of seizures. Use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurological disorders. The safe use of NexGard^® PLUS CHEWS has not been evaluated in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs. Dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infection prior to starting a heartworm disease preventive. Treatment with fewer than six monthly doses after the last exposure to mosquitoes has not been evaluated and may not provide complete heartworm prevention. Prior to administration of NexGard^® PLUS CHEWS, dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infection. At the discretion of the veterinarian, infected dogs should be treated with an adulticide to remove adult heartworms. NexGard^® PLUS chews are not effective against adult D. immitis.

How should NexGard^®PLUS CHEWS for Dogs be given/administered?

NexGard^® PLUS CHEWS require a prescription from your Veterinarian. Remove only one chewable at a time from the foil-backed blister card and administer the appropriate dosage based on your dog's weight. NexGard^® PLUS can be administered with or without food. Care should be taken to ensure that the dog consumes the complete dose, and that part of the dose is not lost or refused. NexGard^® PLUS should be administered monthly. The first dose must be given within 30 days of the dog's first mosquito exposure, and the final dose within 30 days of the last exposure. When switching from another heartworm preventive, the first NexGard^® PLUS dose should be given within 30 days of the last dose of the previous medication. For optimal performance, give the chewable once a month on or about the same day. If there's a delay in treatment, immediate administration and resuming the monthly dosing regimen minimize adult heartworm development. Monthly use of NexGard^® PLUS also controls roundworms and hookworms. Measures should be taken to prevent reinfection with intestinal parasites.

If you accidentally administer more than the recommended dose of NexGard^® PLUS to your pet, you should seek immediate veterinary attention. Overdosing can result in symptoms such as increased side effects, gastrointestinal issues (vomiting, diarrhea), tremors, ataxia (lack of coordination), and other neurologic abnormalities. Severe cases of overdose may even lead to seizures or other life-threatening conditions. What other drugs will affect NexGard^® PLUS CHEWS for Dogs?

There are no known contraindications for the use of NexGard^® PLUS CHEWS for Dogs. In a well-controlled field study, NexGard^® PLUS CHEWS were used concurrently with other medications such as vaccines, antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), anesthetics, sedatives, analgesics, steroids, anthelmintics, antiemetics, and antipruritics. No adverse reactions were associated with the concurrent use of NexGard^® PLUS CHEWS and other medications.
