Rated 1 out of 5 by from Doesn't work The shirt didn't work on our Shiapoo during thunderstorms. It just makes her hot.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from mixed feelings Thundershirt came very fast -yea. Downside - The XL range is so spread 65-110 lbs and I see the others' have ranges far less of a weight spread. The velcro does not match up well for my 85 pound pet. I need this very minute. I does appear to relieve some stress, I am concerned if the one size down would fit.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't work for car anxiety. The thundershirt was recommended to us for our doberman's car anxiety. Whenever she travels in the car her ears stay way back and she drools terribly making a mess of anything not covered by a blanket. the thundershirt made it worse. In addition to the drooling she started to tremble. We pulled over after a few miles and took off the shirt.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did Not Work for My Great Pyrenees Mix I bought the XXL for our Pyr mix that is very afraid of storms ever since a tornado narrowly missed us. Unfortunately, the Thundershirt did not help relieve his angst during our next storm and I was still not able to sleep. :(

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wacko Dog No More I was given a Thundershirt by a friend whose dog became "catatonic" while wearing it. She said she couldn't use the shirt on her small dog despite all the dog's neurosis. We have a Poodle/Schnauzer mix who we rescued at about 1 1/2. We trained her with a professional but she continued to be anxious, nervous, & barked at every sound. I put the Thundershirt on her and she immediately calmed down. She was almost too calm at first and would hardly move, but after putting it on her several times and cuddling with her to assure her it was OK, she now accepts the shirt. I would also put it on her to keep her calm while out on walks; kept her from pulling & barking at other dogs. Now we use a small walking harness on her which apparently reminds her of the Thundershirt. She has the same reaction of calmness when she wears the soft, wrap around hardness. Seems to have a similar effect or serves as a reminder.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Instant Calm I was skeptical when my wife brought this home. Our Chi gets 'insane' when thunderstorms arrive. Put this on and she is almost paralyzed and doesn't do anything but lay in her bed. Now that she is older, she has dementia and is extremely anxious. She paces in circles and a lot more anxious behavior. We tried it for that and it was very effective at least 90%. She still has to take medicine daily but when it doesn't seem to work, we have the thundershirt. It is a blessing for our dog, but I've heard each dog is different.

What is Thundershirt?

As seen on TV, Thundershirt is an affordable, drug-free solution for anxiety problems in dogs. Thundershirt uses gentle, constant pressure on your pet's torso (just like a constant hug) to help calm your pet. Much in the same way that swaddling comforts newborn babies, Thundershirt comforts pets and eases anxiety. Thundershirt is great for dogs with fear of thunder or fireworks (or any loud noise), separation anxiety, travel anxiety, crate anxiety, grooming, barking problems, hyperactivity, leash pulling, and even as a general training tool.

NOTE: For additional calming effect, ThunderEssence aromatherapy spray and drops are also available.

For:

Dogs

Benefits:

  • Helps calm your dog's anxiety during stressful situations
  • Drug-free and easy-to-use
  • Recommended and used by veterinarians and trainers
  • Over 80% of dog owners report improvement in their dog's noise anxieties when using Thundershirt
  • Great for dogs with many anxiety issues, such as: fear of loud noises, separation anxiety, travel anxiety, crate anxiety, and more
  • Use for anxiety symptoms including: Panting, shaking, drooling, barking/whining, hiding, scratching, licking, bolting, eliminating indoors, seizures and more.
  • Reflective strip for extra safety during nighttime walks

How it works:

Thundershirt uses pressure to relieve anxiety. Experts believe that pressure has a calming effect on the nervous system and have been using pressure techniques for years on both animals and humans. Like acupuncture and acupressure does for people, applying pressure to dogs has been proven to help calm them in stressful situations. In fact, 80% of dog owners who tried Thundershirt for a variety of anxiety problems noticed improvement in their dogs. Veterinarians and dog trainers use and recommend Thundershirt for anxiety, too.

Cautions:

In severe cases of separation anxiety, it is recommended to use Thundershirt in conjunction with a training program. Thundershirt is designed to be safe to leave on for extended periods of time when appropriate for the situation or issue. When properly sized and properly put on with a comfortably snug fit, your dog should be very comfortable. If your dog will be wearing a Thundershirt for more than two hours at a time, it is recommended to remove Thundershirt every one to two hours during the initial periods to check for any signs of irritation points. Irritation points are very rare, but it is best to be cautious.

Directions:

For many anxieties, Thundershirt does not require any training of your dog to be an effective solution. Many dogs will exhibit reduced or eliminated symptoms with the very first usage of Thundershirt (e.g. eliminated shaking, reduced panting, etc.). Some dogs require three or four usages before they begin to show improvement.

Instructions for Initial Fitting & Conditioning:

Thundershirt is designed to be very easy to put on and take off. There is no need for pulling anything over your dog's head or threading your dog's legs through leg holes. After you first receive your Thundershirt, we recommend the following steps while your dog is NOT feeling anxiety:

  • Before putting Thundershirt on your dog for the first time, offer a small food treat to your dog using the folded Thundershirt as a "plate". Dogs typically become more comfortable and trusting of something that "brings" them food or anything that they associate with food. So this is an easy little trick to quickly create a positive association with Thundershirt for your dog.
  • Next, simply follow the "Fitting Instructions" below. Leave Thundershirt on for 5-10 minutes. Following these simple instructions allows you to learn exactly how to use Thundershirt while the dog is calm and helps to avoid the risk that he or she might begin to associate Thundershirt with an anxiety stimulus. It can also be beneficial to put Thundershirt on every 4-8 weeks in the absence of anxiety.

To further strengthen positive associations with Thundershirt, provide a treat to your dog each time right after you put it on. Most Thundershirt pet parents report that their dogs really enjoy wearing their Thundershirts, and many dogs even go on their own to where their Thundershirts are stored when a storm approaches or some other anxiety trigger happens.

Thundershirt Fitting Instructions for Dogs:

  • Place the Thundershirt on your dog's back and wrap the Short Flap under the torso.
  • Wrap the Long Flap under the torso and secure with fasteners onto the Short Flap. You should be able to easily slide your fingers between the Thundershirt and your dog's torso.
  • Wrap the Top Flap down onto the Long Flap and secure with fasteners. Adjust to improve the snug fit and keep Thundershirt securely in place.
  • Wrap the Neck Straps around the front of the dog and secure with fasteners. You should be able to easily slide your fingers under the Neck Straps and should not feel restricting around your dog's neck.
Tip:

If your pet seems nervous or anxious when he or she sees the Thundershirt, try putting it on the ground and giving your dog a little food, using Thundershirt as a plate. This trick often works because many pets become more comfortable with and trusting of anything that they associate with food.

Note:

The fasteners make Thundershirt adjustable for many different body shapes.
