QUESTION
My dogs are 135 lbs and 145 lbs. looking to start on Simparica trio. Obviously they need 2 doses each. Any advice.
ANSWERS (1)
Thank you for your question. For dogs 132.1lbs or more you would administer the appropriate combination of chewable tablets once a month. So for your dog that is 135lbs you would need the 88.1-132lb dose along with the 2.8-5.5lb dose every month. And for your dog that is 145lbs you would need the 88.1-132lbs dose along with the 11.1-22lb dose every month. Unless otherwise directed by your veterinarian.

What is Simparica TRIO?

Simparica TRIO is a monthly chewable tablet that protects your dog against heartworm disease, five types of ticks, fleas, roundworms and hookworms. It has been demonstrated to be safe for puppies as young as 8 weeks old weighing 2.8 pounds or more. Simparica TRIO requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

For:

Dogs and Puppies (8 weeks of age or older, weighing 2.8 lbs or more)

Benefits:

  • Protects dogs against heartworm disease, ticks & fleas, roundworms & hookworms
  • Tasty chewable that dogs love
  • Convenient, once-a-month dosing

How does Simparica TRIO work?

Simparica TRIO contains three active pharmaceutical ingredients, sarolaner, moxidectin, and pyrantel pamoate. Sarolaner is an acaricide and insecticide belonging to the isoxazoline group. Sarolaner inhibits the function of the neurotransmitter gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor and glutamate receptor, and works at the neuromuscular junction in insects. This results in uncontrolled neuromuscular activity leading to death in insects or acarines. Moxidectin is an endectocide in the macrocyclic lactone class. Moxidectin acts by interfering with the chloride channel-mediated neurotransmission in the parasite. This results in paralysis and death of the parasite. Pyrantel pamoate is a nematocide belonging to the tetrahydropyrimidine class. Pyrantel acts as a depolarizing, neuromuscular-blocking agent in susceptible parasites, which causes paralysis and death or expulsion of the organism.

Compare the labels of other products to Simparica Trio

Cautions:

Sarolaner, one of the ingredients in Simparica TRIO, is a member of the isoxazoline class. This class has been associated with neurologic adverse reactions including tremors, ataxia, and seizures. Seizures have been reported in dogs receiving isoxazoline class drugs, even in dogs without a history of seizures. Use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurologic disorders.
Prior to administration of Simparica TRIO, dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infections. Infected dogs should be treated with an adulticide to remove adult heartworms. Simparica TRIO is not effective against adult D. immitis. The safe use of Simparica TRIO has not been evaluated in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs.

Brand Name:

Simparica TRIO (Zoetis)

Generic Name:

Sarolaner, moxidectin, and pyrantel

What is the most important thing I should know about Simparica TRIO?

Simparica TRIO prevents heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis, kills adult fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) and is indicated for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations, the treatment and control of tick infestations with Amblyomma americanum (lone star tick), Amblyomma maculatum (Gulf Coast tick), Dermacentor variabilis (American dog tick), Ixodes scapularis (black-legged tick), and Rhipicephalus sanguineus (brown dog tick), and the treatment and control of roundworm (immature adult and adult Toxocara canis and adult Toxascaris leonina) and adult hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum and Uncinaria stenocephala) infections for one month in dogs and puppies 8 weeks of age and older, and weighing 2.8 pounds or greater. It requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Simparica TRIO to my pet?
