What is Drontal Plus?

Drontal Plus is a broad-spectrum dewormer used in dogs to treat tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. Drontal Plus is sold per tablet and requires a prescription.

For:

Dogs & Puppies (3+ weeks of age, weighing 2+ lbs)

Benefits:

  • Proven to eliminate the most common intestinal parasites (tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms)
  • Chewable tablets are easy to give
  • Given as a single dose
  • Sold per tablet

How does Drontal Plus work?

Drontal Plus' active ingredients are praziquantel, pyrantel pamoate and febantel. Praziquantel works by damaging the parasite's skin internally, so the parasite disintegrates and is removed by your pet's immune system. Pyrantel pamoate is active against hookworms and ascarids and acts as a depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent, causing sudden contraction, followed by paralysis. This results in the hookworm losing its grip in the intestinal wall and is removed from your pet's system by the natural process. Febantel is active against nematode parasites, including whipworms.

Cautions:

Side effects of Drontal Plus are rare but may include vomiting, loss of appetite, or diarrhea. Other side effects may also occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any unusual or bothersome side effects that may occur.

Brand Name:

Drontal Plus (Bayer)

Generic Name:

Praziquantel (pra-zee-kwan'-tell) with pyrantel pamoate and febantel

What is the most important thing I should know about Drontal Plus?

Drontal Plus is a prescription medication FDA approved for use in dogs and puppies at least 3 weeks old and weighing at least 2 lbs. Drontal Plus is available as 22.7 mg scored chewable tablets for small dogs (2-25 lbs), 68 mg scored chewable tablets for medium dogs (26-60 lbs), and 136 mg scored chewable tablets for large dogs (45 lbs and over).

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Drontal Plus to my pet?

Tell your veterinarian if your pet has ever had an allergic reaction to this medication. Tapeworm is a zoonotic infection, meaning humans can contract tapeworm from animals. Discuss the importance of maintaining good personal hygiene.

How should Drontal Plus be given?

Give Drontal Plus exactly as directed by the veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions ask your pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Drontal Plus is given as a single dose. The usual dose of small tablets (22.7 mg) for dogs 2-4 lbs is 1/2 tablet, 5-7 lbs is 1 tablet, 8-12 lbs is 1 1/2 tablets, 13-18 lbs is 2 tablets and 19-25 lbs is 2 1/2 tablets. The usual dose of medium tablets (68 mg) for dogs 26-30 lbs is 1 tablet, 31-44 lbs is 1 1/2 tablets, 45-60 lbs is 2 tablets. Fasting is neither necessary nor recommended.

What are the potential side effects of Drontal Plus?

Side effects of Drontal Plus are rare but may include vomiting, loss of appetite or diarrhea. Other side effects may also occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to your pet.

What happens if I miss giving a dose of Drontal Plus?

Drontal Plus tablets are given as a single dose.

What happens if I overdose my pet on Drontal Plus?

If you suspect an overdose, consult your veterinarian.

What should I avoid while giving Drontal Plus to my pet?

Do not give Drontal Plus to dogs allergic to it or any of the individual ingredients. Because humans can contract tapeworm from animals, it is important to maintain good personal hygiene. It is also important to eliminate fleas on the pet and in the household and to not feed the pet rodents or uncooked meat or fish. To prevent reinfection, daily cleanup of stools is recommended.

What other drugs will affect Drontal Plus?

Do not give Drontal Plus to your pet if already giving an alternate dewormer medication unless directed to by your veterinarian.

Drontal Plus is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from great product I got this from our vet after we saw little friends in our 2and a half month old doberman waste. We noticed after only 2 day a we did not notice any more "little friends" and we couldn't be happier.since the dog sleeps in our bed and stays inside around small children most of the time. We did notice 1 side effect from the medicine.our dog was extremely hiper.way more than normal, and she seemed to not get comfortable .she was very figgity.I gave her a children's chewable Tylenol and she was fine. But that only lasted the day she for the meds.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product We have been using this as a worm preventative on our dogs for 10 years. Every six months. None of our dogs have had a worm issue in those 10 years. Many of our neighbors dogs have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works When I got my first puppy she had tapeworms wiggling in her feces. Vet prescribed Drontal Plus and the worms cleared immediately! Now I have a second puppy 1 year later and he had tapeworms AND roundworms and once again we were prescribed Drontal Plus. It's a great product but make sure to clean your animals living area with bleach to kill eggs and larvae so they don't get reinfected after the medication wears off and to do a followup to get any newly hatched worms.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from not sure I have a 4 1/2 mo Norwich terrier puppy. I used this medication as a precaution since he trys to eat everything in the yard (including rabbit pellets/feces). This medication made him extremely hyper the day he took it, and he didn't want to go to sleep that night. The following day he slept allll day. He was nauseous, but didn't vomit. He had soft stools the next day, but I didn't see any worms. .I was given this medication by our vet. I think our puppy may be sensitive to this medication.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product!!! We were skeptical to use this product, basing our views off of the reviews from this page... But we went ahead & bought the product anyway.. We just got 2 beagle puppies & they had worms so bad. They were all over their crate in the mornings & leaking out of their behind. It was disgusting. We tried this product & within 2 hours, most of the worms had exited our puppies bodies (in their stools). It was disgusting. It's been 24 hours & there are no more worms in their stools & we woke up to no worms in the crate, not one! They have had NO side effects. They had loose stool, but not diarrhea. This product is AWESOME & very inexpensive!!!

My dog is ~105 lbs and the vet prescribed this for tapeworm and I didn't realize I was supposed to give both tablets in the same day. Will it effect anything if I gave him one pill one day and the other pill the following day?

Asked by: KSloan
There should not be any problems with giving it as a separate dose. However, watch for signs that the worms may not have fully cleared and contact your veterinarian for another dose of dewormer.

Can I give this to my dog if he is taking heart guard plus

Asked by: Anthony
Hello, Drontal Plus is a broad-spectrum dewormer used in dogs to treat tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. Heartgard Plus is a chewable tablet for dogs that provides protection against heartworms, and treats and controls roundworms and hookworms. I do not recommend using these two products together. Please contact your Vet to determine the best option for your dog.

I know how many tablets to administer but how many times per days? Per month(s).???

Asked by: Belle
Single dose is determined based on your pet's weight. Please contact your vet to determine this dose. Redosing is recommended based on your pet's fecal test results. If your pet still has parasites, a second re dose may be required. Your vet will determine how long after first dose to redose, if needed.

Can you give to lactating dogs

Asked by: Deb11
Drontal Plus contains Praziquantel (pra-zee-kwan'-tell) with pyrantel pamoate and febantel. Pyrantel Pamoate is safe to use in nursing dogs. Praziquantel appears in maternal milk at a concentration of about 25% of that in maternal serum, but is unlikely to pose harm to nursing offspring.
