Desmopressin is used to treat Central Diabetes Insipidus in dogs and cats. It’s a synthetic form of vasopressin, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that regulates urine production and water retention. Cats and dogs that suffer from Central Diabetes Insipidus do not produce enough vasopressin. When used as prescribed by your veterinarian, Desmopressin can help resolve excessive thirst and increased urination. The drug can also cause an increase in blood clotting, and is sometimes used to treat pets with Von Willebrand disease, a genetic disorder that prevents the blood from clotting efficiently. Desmopressin is sold by the tablet and requires a prescription from your veterinarian.
Dogs and Cats
Desmopressin is a synthetic replacement for vasopressin, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that regulates urine production and water retention. Pets with Central Diabetes Insipidus do not produce enough of this hormone on their own and may experience excessive thirst and increased urination.
Desmopressin may interact with other drugs. Take caution if your pet has heart disease or if your pet is prone to forming blood clots.

Give your pet the missed dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for their next dose, skip the missed dose and return to their regular dosing schedule. Do not double dose.
If an overdose is suspected, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Excessive water intake should be avoided when giving Desmopressin to prevent water intoxication. Ask your veterinarian how much water your pet should drink while taking Desmopressin.
