Rated 2 out of 5 by from Works but doesn't As far as I can tell it WILL kill BROWN fleas but WILL NOT kill BLACK fleas.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from So disappointed I've used advantage for my cats for a long long time and it has alwaysbeen great. This time around it just did not seem to work at all. It's been 2 weeks and they are both still scratching and we are still being bitten by fleas. We treated the one room with carpet in our home and they just keep getting worse.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sad with current product I have used Advantage II for years on my indoor cats and it has always done a good job. However for the past three months of use my cats still are having a flea problem. We don't have carpet, only area rugs, so it can't be that we have an infestation in the house. They are all scratching and chewing and I have been able to use a flea comb on one or two of them after about a week of application and have found fleas. We now have 6 cats and I've spent a lot of money on this product. I'm not sure if switching to another brand might help now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It works This is my 2nd year to come back to purchase this product to treat the fleas problems on my cats and dogs at home. My cat immediately stop the excessive starching the next day after the application and I noticed the flea problem is under control now.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Used to Work 100% in TN - No Longer! :( I'm heartbroken because Advantage II has been our go-to for years + years for flea outbreaks - it did the job fantastically + eradicated them 100% immediately! After spending over $200 on it here since February for the dogs + cats, I'm so disappointed to discover it's no longer working in West TN at all, it was like we never treated them. We had this same problem with Frontline years ago where it suddenly stopped working in this area but I never dreamed they'd become immune to Advantage as well since it had always wiped the fleas out 100% so quickly. We treat our yard every year too + the fleas + ticks have just been awful this year despite all our efforts - we didn't have much of a winter so I guess that gave the pests an even bigger boost. It was super disappointing to find that Advantage II has ceased to work tho, I fully expected the fleas would disappear like they always have before + it was like we'd never put anything on the pets. Most years we have even been able to not have to put stuff on the indoor cats because Advantage always did such a great job for the dogs. This year it didn't work at all for the dogs nor the indoor or outside cats. All that said, after doing some research I forked over another $200 on Activyl and treated them all (dogs + inside and outside cats) a few days ago, and already we're seeing a huge reduction in flea activity so I guess that's what we'll be working with the rest of this summer... fingers crossed it keeps working! Just so disappointed to have spent so much this year on our formerly trusted + proven Advantage II only for it not to work at all anymore. :(

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I used this brand last year and it worked perfectly. This year it doesn’t seem to be working at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great for us I bought this years ago from the vet. My first time buying thru 800petmeds and as usual it worked. My cat had huge scabs on her neck and lower back. I felt terrible but the vet said it would $40 a month for each cat. They also said they do t carry this anymore as the fleas are immuned to it. Well my baby has no more scabs. So that tells me it's working. Thank you for your services and low prices.

Questions

How long before I can pick my cat up when I put med on neck over 14lbs

Asked by: Loki
You can pick your cat up right after application, just avoid that area for about 10-12 hours. I like to apply it just before bed-time so by morning, I can snuggle my kitty as normal without worry.

My cat is now over 20 yrs old. He doesn't eat much anymore, sleeps mostly all day and night and seems frail. I still have Advantage flea treatment left that I purchased from you. Can I use this on my elderly cat. Will it irritate him?

Asked by: Hula Maiden
It is okay to use the Advantage flea treatment on your elderly feline to make sure his remaining time with you is free from being irritated by fleas.

I messed up the application and it mostly got on my cat's hair. Should I reapply?

Asked by: Sussey
Thank you for your question. We recommend waiting at least 3 weeks before redosing your pet. Please be sure the medication is being applied directly to your pets skin to ensure the medication works effectively. Apply entire contents of the tube evenly in 3 or 4 spots on the top of the back from the shoulder to the base of the tail. You may view the product on our page and under the How to Use tab there are detailed instructions on how to apply the medication.

After applying product can I still give my dog a bath after? And if so is there a time period as to which I can give him one?

Asked by: lexi9519
You should wait 48 hours after applying Advantage II before giving a bath and then you should only use a soap-free shampoo or else you could wash off some of the product and reduce it's effectiveness. I usually tell my clients to bathe the pet first, wait 48 hours to allows the natural oils on the skin to come back (needed for the product to properly spread over the body) and then apply the Advantage II.

What is Advantage II?

Advantage II is a monthly flea preventative for dogs and cats that offers comprehensive flea protection by killing adult fleas, larvae, and eggs. Plus, it kills fleas through contact, which means fleas don't have to bite your pet to die. Advantage II also treats, prevents, and controls lice on dogs. Advantage II does not kill ticks, so we recommend using the Preventic Tick Collar along with Advantage II (dogs only). Advantage II for small cats 5-9 lbs can also be used for ferrets weighing 1 lb or over and 10 weeks of age or older.

For:

Dogs (7+ weeks of age, weighing 3+ lbs), Cats (8+ weeks of age, weighing 2+ lbs), Ferrets (10+ weeks of age, weighing 1+ lbs)

Benefits:

  • Convenient, once-a-month application
  • Kills through contact - fleas don't have to bite to die
  • Kills fleas within 12 hours of application on cats and dogs
  • Kills fleas within 24 hours of application on ferrets
  • Kills all flea life stages including flea eggs and larvae to prevent infestation
  • Treats, prevents, and controls lice infestations (dogs only)
  • Safe and easy to apply
  • Waterproof - remains effective even if pet gets wet (use of a soap-free shampoo is recommended)

How does Advantage II work?

The first active ingredient is imidacloprid, which acts on the nervous system of the flea to cause paralysis and subsequent death. Within 12 hours of application on cats and dogs, 98-100 percent of fleas are dead. Advantage II Small Cat kills the existing fleas on ferrets within 24 hours. The second active ingredient, pyriproxyfen, is an insect growth regulator. Once a female flea lays her eggs, pyriproxyfen works to prevent the eggs from hatching, ending the flea life cycle. Also, the active ingredient in Advantage II kills through contact, which means that fleas don't have to bite your pet to die. Reinfesting fleas are killed with protection against further flea infestation lasting for up to 4 weeks. Pre-existing pupae in the environment may continue to emerge for 6 weeks or longer depending upon the climactic conditions.

Cautions:

Individual sensitivities, while rare, may occur after using any pesticide product for pets. If signs persist, or become severe, consult a veterinarian immediately. Do not get this product in your pet's eyes or mouth.

Advantage II Directions:

  • Only use Advantage II on dogs/puppies over 3 lbs and over 7 weeks of age, cats/kittens over 2 lbs and over 8 weeks of age, and ferrets 1 lb or over and 10 weeks of age or older.
  • Apply Advantage II once a month every month.
  • For dogs up to 20 lbs, part the pet's hair between the shoulder blades until you can see the skin. Place the tip of the applicator on the skin and release all of the tube's contents on a single spot directly on the skin.
  • For dogs 21 lbs and over, apply entire contents of the tube evenly in 3 or 4 spots on the top of the back from the shoulder to the base of the tail. At each spot, part the hair until the skin is visible. Place the tip of the applicator on the skin and release a portion of the Advantage II solution directly on the skin. Do not apply an excessive amount of solution at any one spot that could cause some of the solution to run off the side of the dog.
  • For kittens, cats and ferrets, place the applicator tip through the cat's hair to the skin on the neck at the base of the skull and release all of the tube's contents on a single spot directly on the skin.
  • Use only one applicator per treatment.
Tip:

Under normal conditions Advantage II is effective for a month. However, in case of severe flea infestation, retreatment may be necessary earlier than four weeks. Do not re-treat cats or dogs more often than once every 7 days. For ferrets, do not retreat more often than every 14 days. After flea control is obtained, return to a monthly treatment.
