Uniprim Powder is an oral antibiotic that treats bacterial infections in horses and requires a prescription from your veterinarian. It is even well tolerated by foals. Uniprim Powder contains 67 mg of trimethoprim and 333 mg of sulfadiazine per gm of powder. It is a powder that is to be given by the mouth. The recommended dosage is 3.75 gm of powder per 110 lbs body weight per day for 5-7 days.
What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Uniprim Powder to my horse?
Tell your veterinarian if your mare is pregnant, lactating, or breeding. Tell your veterinarian if your horse has a hypersensitivity to trimethoprim or sulfadiazine.
How should Uniprim Powder be given?
Follow your veterinarian's instructions exactly as directed when giving your horse Uniprim Powder. Administer Uniprim Powder orally once a day in a small amount of palatable feed. The recommended dosage is 3.75 gm of powder per 110 lbs body weight per day for 5-7 days. Two level, loose-filled scoops contain 37.5 gm, sufficient to treat 1,100 lbs of body weight. Since product contents may settle, gentle agitation during scooping is recommended.
What are the potential side effects of Uniprim Powder?
An individual horse's hypersensitivity may result in local or generalized reactions. Anaphylactoid reactions, although rare, may also occur. Horses have developed diarrhea during trimethoprim/sulfadiazine treatment, which could be fatal. If fecal consistency changes during therapy, discontinue treatment immediately and contact your veterinarian.
What happens if I miss giving a dose of Uniprim Powder?
Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is too close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume a regular schedule. Do not double dose.
