About this product

What is Proin?

Proin is a medication that is used to relieve the symptoms of urinary incontinence in dogs. Proin requires a prescription from your veterinarian who is in the best position to evaluate if your pet will benefit from using this drug.

For:

Dogs

Benefits:

  • Is a supplement for urinary incontinence in dogs
  • Ensures sustained phenylpropanolamine levels in the blood stream and may help reduce the conditions often associated with high levels of phenylpropanolamine such as: decreased appetite, changes in heart rate, increased blood pressure, hyperexcitability

How it Works:

Proin contains the active ingredient phenylpropanolamine, an adrenergic agent that works by tightening the bladder sphincter muscle, which helps to control urine leakage.

Cautions:

Don't give Proin with ephedrine or epinephrine, and don't give it within two weeks of using a MAOi, such as Anipryl, selegiline or a Preventic Collar. Possible side effects can occur, including restlessness, or loss of appetite, difficulty breathing, hives, and swelling of the lips, tongue, or face. If these or any other side effects occur, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Brand Name:

Proin (PRN Pharmacal)

Generic Name:

Phenylpropanolamine

Great product
It took a few months to get the dose right but she’s a large growing dog. I think we have it right now. I will need to start shipping to my offices because the drug requires a signature and we work during the day. Had to chase the UPS truck down. Otherwise we will be taking it the rest of her life so glad to set it up for auto ship.

Breed GSD
We have a happy dog again. Thank you Proin!
We have a 4-year old GSD who’s had aortic and pulmonic stenosis since birth. She’s been on Atenolol since she was 8-weeks old. She then started having urinary incontinence at about 4 1/2 years old, but the veterinarian didn’t want to use Proin with her already having heart complications and taking Atenlol. We tried antibiotics for a few weeks and then Incurin for 1- month. Each time the urinary incontinence issues resurfaced after a few days. Finally after 1 1/2 months of little to no success the veterinary put her on 75 mg of Proin. The first night we gave her Proin, it resulted in 8-9 severe vomiting incidents and heavy panting. We were obviously devastated, since these were both known side effects of the Proin medication. The veterinarian then changed the dosage to just 25 mg to see if the side effects would continue. The veterinarian also recommended giving her Proin twice per day, during meal times. Obviously, after that first night, our GSD refused to take the Proin again as a treat. We were however able to get her to take it mixed inside peanut butter. The 25 mg Proin dosage did not cause any further vomiting or panting, but it also did not stop the incontinence issues. It slowed them down, but didn’t stop them completely. The veterinarian then changed the dosage to 50 mg, twice per day at meal times and we have not had any issues whatsoever. We knew with our GSD’s heart complications and subsequent medication that taking Proin was going to be a complicated process. However, with close monitoring of our GSD’s blood pressure levels and experimental dosage levels, the problem has now completely absolved. It’s been over 1- month now since we’ve had her on the 50 mg, twice per day regiment and there have been ZERO issues with either urinary incontinence or medication’s side effects. We have a happy dog again. Thank you Proin!
