GastroGard's active ingredient, omeprazole, is a gastric acid pump inhibitor that blocks the secretion of gastric acid regardless of the stimulus.
The safety of GastroGard paste hasn't been determined in pregnant or lactating mares.

GastroGard requires a prescription from your veterinarian and should not be used in foals under 4 weeks of age. It is an oral paste that comes in an easy-to-use oral dosing syringe. One syringe is sufficient for a horse up to 1,250 lbs. GastroGard is available as an oral paste that is meant to be administered directly into the mouth. The recommended dose of GastroGard for the treatment of ulcers is 1.8 mg per lb body weight once a day for 4 weeks. The recommended dose of GastroGard for the prevention of ulcers is 0.9 mg per lb body weight once a day for 4 weeks. To deliver the correct dosage for the prevention of ulcers, set the syringe plunger to the weight marking corresponding to half of your horse's weight in lbs.
Tell your veterinarian if your horse has a hypersensitivity to omeprazole. Tell your veterinarian if your mare is pregnant, lactating or breeding.
Give GastroGard exactly as directed by your veterinarian. GastroGard must be administered by the mouth. The recommended dose of GastroGard for the treatment of ulcers is 1.8 mg per lb body weight once a day for 4 weeks. To deliver the correct dosage for the prevention of ulcers, set the syringe plunger to the weight marking corresponding to half of your horse's weight in lbs. To set the plunger, turn the knurled ring on the plunger 1/4 turn to the left and slide the knurled ring along the plunger shaft so that the side nearest the barrel is at the appropriate weight marking, aligning the arrows on the ring and plunger. Lock the ring in place by making a 1/4 turn to the right. Ensure it is locked before use.
There are no reported side effects.
Give the next dose as soon as you remember. If it is too close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume a normal dosing schedule. Do not double dose.
Contact your veterinarian immediately.
Tell your veterinarian if your horse is currently taking any medications before giving your horse GastroGard.
Make sure your horse's mouth contains no feed.
