BEWARE SCARY SIDE EFFECTS
Our Jasper had a recommendation by the vet to take this. A few hours after taking this medication he started sounding as if he had a hairball stuck in his throat. It continued non stop for several hours. Jasper is super particular and doesn’t even eat certain dog treats due to the texture so I knew it wasn’t something he mistakenly ate. We continue observing him for a few more hours reaching his vet and online 24/7 vet chat. Eventually we discovered this was the only thing new to his daily intake of things and that it was caused the weird noises coming from his throat. I almost spent 300.00 going to the vet emergency room. I want to warn every pet parent to make sure with the vet the side effects and keep an eye on your pet for the first two days after taking this. They should really pull this off the market . 1800 pet meds was super amazing with their response but this product should be pulled off the market. I saw many other worse side effects than my Jasper. Day 2 Jasper is doing better but it’s super scary having to deal with this.

Works Perfectly!!
I have 4 dogs on this varying in size. A 9lb dachshund, 16lb dachshund, 45lb boxer/mix, and a 163lb english mastiff. They all take different weight size pills and we have not seen a single flea at all!! All of my babies have been on this for about a year, and it's been wonderful! We have a lot of land, and a lot of trees and grass, which usually means a bunch of ticks! Last year almost every week we were picking ticks off the dogs. But this summer since they've all been on Simparica we haven't seen a single tick! I'm so glad my vet recommended this product! It's not insanely expensive and it works wonders!!

Always Worked for Me
I have used this in the past and it worked great. I have 4 dogs and my 2 large white dogs have some fleas and my 2 black dogs do not have any, which is odd. I cannot use topicals because my dogs all have sensitive skin and it causes them irritation, I wish that I could as that is the only way to actually repel the fleas from jumping on them due to the topical getting into the dog's oil glands. I have read a lot of negative comments on here from people who are upset that they still have flea problems....unless you treat your yard and house if you already have a problem, the Simparica is not going to help due to the fact that it is not a repellent, you would need to use a topical for that. Treat your yard with Diatomaceous Earth, will kill fleas (all life cycles) from the yard and not hurt your animals or children, treat your house with a spray if you have hard floors, or if you have carpeting you can use the Diatomaceous Earth in the carpet let it soak in the carpet for a few hours then vacuum it up.....not harmful to humans or animals at all.

Works exactly as it should
I've been using this with my 5 year old black lab mix for about a year now. She thinks it's a treat and gobbles it right down. Even when my 2 cats had fleas when their flea prevention stopped working in a new climate, she remained flea free! No side effects noticed.

works great for my tiny dogs
I have a 4lb teacup chihuahua and a 6lb chihuahua (who uses the next dosage up- the people box) and it works great for them. No side effects. The first time I used this my teacup chihuahua was infested with fleas from staying the night at a nasty vets office so I bought this since it was the only thing I could find safe for a dog his size. Literally within minutes of him taking this the fleas started dying. I've also noticed it makes their blood taste bad so fleas and ticks usually jump off before they die. My dogs love the way these pills taste and they take them like they're treats. This website has amazing customer service and I would recommend buying from them. If you have any issues they go above and beyond to correct them. Very impressed with the service they've provided!

ANSWERS (1)
Thank you for your question. You would need to consult your veterinarian for specifics on why they chose the two medication you referenced. However we can tell you the medications mentioned are the basic protection needed for pets. Simparica is a flea and tick preventative and Ivermectin Pyrantel offers is a heartworms preventative and also controls intestinal parasites.

What is Simparica?

Simparica is a fast-acting oral flea and tick preventative that begins killing fleas and ticks within hours of administration and remains effective for one month to prevent re-infestations. It is indicated for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis), and the treatment and control of tick infestations [Amblyomma americanum (Lone Star tick), Amblyomma maculatum (Gulf Coast tick), Dermacentor variabilis (American dog tick), Ixodes scapularis (deer tick/black-legged tick), and Rhipicephalus sanguineus (brown dog tick)]. Simparica begins to kill adult fleas within 3 hours and ticks within 8 hours of administration. Treatment with Simparica may begin at any time of the year and is safe to use year-round without interruption. Simparica is given monthly and requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

For:

Dogs (6+ months of age, weighing 2.8+ lbs)

Benefits:

  • Each tablet provides a full month of protection against fleas and ticks
  • Tasty, liver-flavored chewable tablet is easy to administer
  • Chewable tablets can be given directly to your dog or broken up and mixed with food
  • Available in six weight categories: 2.8-5.5 lbs, 5.6-11 lbs, 11.1-22.0 lbs, 22.1-40 lbs, 44.1-88.0 lbs and 88.1-132 lbs

How does Simparica work?

Simparica contains the active ingredient sarolaner, which inhibits the function of the neurotransmitter gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor and glutamate receptor, and works at the neuromuscular junction in insects. This results in uncontrolled neuromuscular activity leading to death in insects or acarines. Simparica is administered once a month directly by mouth or can be crumbled and mixed with food. To minimize the likelihood of flea re-infestation, it is important to treat all dogs and cats within a household with an approved flea control product.

Cautions:

Not for use in humans. Keep this and all drugs out of reach of children and pets. For use in dogs only. Do not use Simparica in cats. Simparica should not be used in dogs less than 6 months of age weighing less than 2.8 lbs. The safe use of Simparica has not been evaluated in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs.

Brand Name

Simparica (Zoetis)

Generic Name

Sarolaner (sar-oh-lan-ur)

What is the most important thing I should know about Simparica?

Simparica is used for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis), and the treatment and control of tick infestations [Amblyomma americanum (Lone Star tick), Amblyomma maculatum (Gulf Coast tick), Dermacentor variabilis (American dog tick), Ixodes scapularis (deer tick/black-legged tick), and Rhipicephalus sanguineus (brown dog tick)] in dogs over 6 months of age weighing 2.8 lbs and over. Simparica is available as a liver-flavored, chewable tablet. Simparica requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Simparica to my pet?

Tell your veterinarian if your pet is breeding, pregnant, or lactating.

How Simparica should be given?

Simparica should be administered orally, once every month, at the minimum dosage of 0.91 mg/lb (2 mg/kg) sarolaner. Dogs weighing 2.8 to 5.5 lbs should be given one 5 mg Simparica chewable tablet monthly. Dogs weighing 5.6 to 11.0 lbs should be given one 10 mg Simparica chewable tablet monthly. Dogs weighing 11.1 to 22.0 lbs should be given one 20 mg Simparica chewable tablet monthly. Dogs weighing 22.1 to 44.0 lbs should be given one 40 mg Simparica chewable tablet monthly. Dogs weighing 44.1 to 88.0 lbs should be given one 80 mg Simparica chewable tablet monthly. Dogs weighing 88.1 to 132.0 lbs should be given one 120 mg Simparica chewable tablet monthly. Dogs weighing more than 132.0 lbs should be given appropriate combination of Simparica tablets monthly. Care should be taken that your dog consumes the complete dose, and treated pets should be observed for a few minutes to ensure that part of the dose is not lost or refused.

For flea treatment and prevention: Treatment may begin at any time of the year. In areas where fleas are common year-round, monthly treatment with Simparica can continue the entire year without interruption. To minimize the likelihood of flea re-infestation, it is important to treat all dogs and cats within a household with an approved flea control product.

What happens if I miss giving a dose of Simparica?

If a dose is missed, administer Simparica and resume a monthly dosing schedule.

What happens if I overdose my pet on Simparica?

Contact your veterinarian immediately.

What should I avoid while giving Simparica to my pet?

QUESTION
the new vet gave me simparica and ivermectin why??? I only bought one pill of each because she is still a puppy.

Thank you for your question. Yes, this medication does require a prescription. Once an order is placed we would contact your vet for the prescription.
