What is Parastar Plus for Dogs?

Parastar Plus is a topical flea, tick, mite and lice treatment developed for dogs. The waterproof solution contains two active ingredients that begin to kill adult fleas, disease-spreading ticks, and chewing lice within 1 hour of application. It also controls mites that may cause sarcoptic mange. The solution continues to prevent infestations for one full month. The easy to use applicator is applied to a single spot to provide flea and tick protection. Gentle enough for use on puppies twelve weeks of age or older.

For:

Dogs (12 weeks of age over 4 lbs)

Benefits:
  • Begins killing adult fleas and ticks within 1 hour
  • Kills adult fleas, ticks and chewing lice for up to 30 days
  • Controls mites that may cause Sarcoptic mange
  • Waterproof topical solution
  • Easy to use single spot application
  • Approved for dogs and puppies 12 weeks of age and over 4 lbs
How it Works:

Parastar Plus contains two fast-acting insecticides, fipronil and cyphenothrin, which start to kill fleas and ticks within 1 hour. The topical treatment is applied to the skin and spreads into the hair follicle, killing adult fleas before they lay eggs, ticks (brown dog tick, deer tick, American dog tick and lone star tick) that may transmit Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and chewing lice for one month. In addition, it also controls mites that may cause sarcoptic mange.

Cautions:

Keep out of reach of children and pets. Consult a veterinarian before using on medicated, debilitated or aged dogs. Do not use on cats.

Brand Name:

Parastar™ Plus (fipronil/cyphenothrin)

Active Ingredient(s):

Fipronil (9.8%), Cyphenothrin (5.2%)

What is this product used for:

Parastar Plus contains two active ingredients, fipronil and cyphenothrin, which begin killing adult fleas and ticks (brown dog tick, deer tick, American dog tick and lone star tick) 1 hour after application and continue to kill for one full month. Parastar Plus also kills chewing lice and controls mites that may cause Sarcoptic mange, for one full month. Fipronil targets the nervous system, resulting in hyperexcitability and death. Cyphenothrin interferes with nerve cells, resulting in paralysis and death.

Availability:

Parastar Plus is a non-prescription product.

How this product should be used:

Weigh your dog to be sure you are applying the correct dose for the weight of your dog. The solution should be applied monthly to a single spot between the dog's shoulder blades. Monthly application is recommended for control of flea, tick, chewing lice and mite infestations. Only one applicator per treatment is needed. Repeat application may be made if necessary, but do not apply more often than once every 30 days.

What are the side effects:

Sensitivities may rarely occur after using any pesticide product. Dogs may experience some temporary irritation at the site of product application. If signs persist, or become more severe within a few days of application, consult a veterinarian immediately. If your dog has an unusual reaction to the initial application, consult a veterinarian before repeating treatment. Certain medications can interact with pesticides.

What special precautions are there:

For external use only. For use on dogs and puppies only. Do not use on puppies less than twelve (12) weeks of age. Do not use on dogs or puppies under 4 lbs. Avoid contact with eyes, skin or clothing.

How should I store this product:

Store in original package in a cool, dark place away from children and pets.

  • Remove one tube from the package.

  • Firmly squeeze to apply all of the solution to the dog's skin in a single spot on the back.

Parastar Plus for Dogs is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst flea treatment I've used this for months at my vet's recommendation. My dog is covered with fleas. I've never had this issue with activyl or advantix. It was a waste of money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Kills ticks I check my dog for ticks after every walk, but sometimes I must miss some. But the ones I have found later are always dead. I thank parastar for that! It's a little greasy the first day it goes on, but otherwise, it really protects my dog and I love it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from No ticks My vet recommended this particular one for use on my dog when she heard we take her hiking in our local woods. So far (1 year + 1 month later), I have never found a tick on her. However, the past two months we cannot say the same with the fleas. She's been just infested and it hasn't been pleasant. I just wanted to add my two cents in case fleas aren't as important as ticks to someone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Tick treatment t! I have used several different brands of topical products for Flea and Tick treatment. This is the only one I e used that actually works on Ticks!! We live on thousands of acres of pasture, crop land etc. surrounded by wildlife. My dogs pick up ticks often, but with Parastar they are dead quickly!! I will not switch back to any other product!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm the PROUD owner of 5 Chihuahuas, I've been using this Prouduct (Parastar Plus) for over a year now, I live on 21 Acres of Wooded Property, I leave my dogs out & they go wandering, exploring in the Woods. Parastar Plus is a Life Saver in my Eyes. No Fleas or Ticks are brought into my house from any of my Dogs. I never have to be picking any fleas or ticks off of their coats either. I'm a very happy customer

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Forget it! I purchased three months of this product for my dog. It failed the third month, dog infested with fleas, cat got them too! So far we have spent several hundred dollars on vet visits and product to rid the house of them. Spend the money and get Frontline.

Q&A

Should I only apply the parastar between the shoulder blades or can u apply to an area by the tail if that is where the chewing lice mostly exist?

Asked by: StusMaSka

I am breastfeeding. Are there any special precautions I need to take when handling this medicine?

Asked by: ConcernedMom
Avoid contact with eyes, skin or clothing.

This says to keep away from children, is it OK if I use this medication on my dog even though I have a newborn? The newborn will obviously not open this product and ingest accidentally, however the dog will likely rub on the baby.

Asked by: ConcernedMom
Please make sure the medication is completely dry before allowing your pet to be in contact. The labeling of this product states to avoid contact with eyes, skin or clothing.

Do I need to keep my dog out of water immediately before or after using?

Asked by: Skipper
I usually wait a day or so to bath after use. I have bathed before use with no problems. Just make sure your dog is completely dry.

Parastar & Comfortis

I am having major flea problems and my vet is recommending Comfortis. Can continue using Parastar with the comfortis so I have tick prevention as well. I WILL NOT USE A COLLAR.
Asked by: Daphne
Unless you're using Prastar for anything other than fleas, Parastar is completely ineffective for flea control. I'm changing to Sentinel, mainly because it has the highest rating. You're seriously wasting money on parastar.
