Tastes Terrible
My Lab will eat anything (well, not lettuce) and she won't even lick these things. Refuses to eat even if coated in cream cheese. Tried to "hide" it in her food, she ate all around it. Broke it up into smaller pieces, she ate around those. Never had this problem with Heartguard.

Dog hates it
We bought this a few months ago and right away Lucy decided she didn't like it. Refused to eat the pill as is, refuses to it hidden in a treat, and very sceptical about eating it crushed up in a soft treat. Also, the package says it's a soft chew. It is not soft at all, just a little brick.

Wonderful product. Not easy to find.
After I rescued 2 dogs, vet put them on Iverhart Max. Only problem has been that manufacturer stopped supplying it to vendors But I'm thrilled that it's available again--in a chewable form--ONLY through 1-800-Petmeds. Vets don't carry it, nor other online pharmacies at this time. Plus Petmeds is the only online pharmacy my vet trusts, so me too!

Since it was only 30 minutes, I recommend that try again tomorrow. Giving the tablet with a little food may help prevent vomiting. You can also split the tablet and give 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 in the evening.

QUESTION
Our Husky will not eat any chewable heartworm product. She chews them into a million pieces and spits them out. She is currently on chewable IverheartMax. Is there a pill or solid tablet that could be given with the same drugs as IverhartMax?
ANSWERS (1)
There are no heartworm tablets that are not made to be"chewable" (although you can "poke" the IverhartMax down). I would suggest using a topical heartworm prevention, such as Advantage Multi (which also kills fleas) or Coraxis. Both prevent heartworms and treat and control hookwork=ms and roundworms, plus whipworms that IverhartMax does not do. The only other difference would be the the treatment for tapeworms. Only IverhartMax, Interceptor Plus and Sentinel Spectrum control tapeworms in dogs.

What is Iverhart Max?

Iverhart Max prevents canine heartworm disease. It also treats and controls roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms. Iverhart Max requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

For:

Dogs (8 weeks of age and weighing at least 6 lbs)

Benefits:

  • Tasty soft chews (bacon flavor)
  • Easy to administer
  • Given once a month

How does Iverhart Max work?

Iverhart Max is an anthelminthic (dewormer). The ingredient pyrantel pamoate is used to treat and control roundworms and hookworms in dogs. Praziquantel is used for treating and controlling tapeworms. Studies have indicated that certain dogs of the herding breeds are more sensitive to the effects of ivermectin administered at elevated dose levels due to the MDR1 gene. For a full list of dog breeds that may be affected, click here.

Cautions:

Can cause sensitivities in herding dog breeds. Side effects of Iverhart Max are rare, but may include lethargy, limpness, salivation, shaking, diarrhea, decreased appetite, licking lips, and belching. Do not give Iverhart Max to your pet if already giving a different heartworm medication. The safe use of this drug has not been evaluated in pregnant or lactating bitches.

Brand Name:

Iverhart Max (Virbac)

Generic Name:

Ivermectin/Pyrantel Pamoate/Praziquantel (eye-ver-mek-tin / pie-ran-tell pam-oh-ate / prah-zee-kwan-tell)

What is the most important information I should know about Iverhart Max?

Iverhart Max is a prescription medication available as soft chews in four strengths for dogs of different weights. Iverhart Max is packaged in boxes of 6 tablets and 12 tablets each tablet individually foil wrapped. It is important for the pet to consume the entire tablet. Iverhart Max should be used in dogs at least 8 weeks of age and no weight requirements. Iverhart Max is for use in dogs only.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Iverhart Max to my pet?

Tell your veterinarian if your pet has ever had an allergic reaction to the medication or any of it's individual ingredients.

How should Iverhart Max be given?

Use with caution, Collies and other herding dog breeds have been known to have adverse reactions to ivermectin administered at elevated dose levels. Give Iverhart Max exactly as directed by the veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. The usual dose of Iverhart Max in toy dogs 6 to 12 pounds is 34mcg/28.5mg/28.5mg (Magenta), for small dogs 12.1 to 25 pounds is 68mcg/57mg/57mg (Blue), for medium dogs 25.1 to 50 pounds is 136mcg/114mg/114mg (Green) and for large dogs 50.1 to 100 pounds is 272mcg/228mg/228mg (Brown). For dogs over 100 pounds the appropriate combination of strengths is used. Remove only one tablet at a time from the foil backed blister card. Iverhart Max can be given as a treat by hand or mixed with a small amount of food. Store the remainder in the original box they came in to protect from light. Store Iverhart Max at room temperature. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and pets. In addition, the safe use of this drug has not been evaluated in pregnant or lactating bitches.

What happens if I miss giving a dose of Iverhart Max?

Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. Do not give a double dose of the medication.

What should I avoid while giving Iverhart Max to my pet?

If the dog has not taken heartworm preventative for 6 months or less, start the medication and test for heartworms after 6 months since microfilaria, that take 6 months to mature, will result in a positive heartworm test result. Because humans can contract hookworm and tapeworm from animals, it is important to maintain good personal hygiene. It is also important to eliminate fleas on the pet and in the household and to not feed the pet rodents. To prevent reinfection, daily cleanup of stools is recommended.

What are the possible side effects of Iverhart Max?

Side effects of Iverhart Max are rare but may include lethargy, limpness, salivation, shaking, diarrhea, decreased appetite, licking lips and belching.

What other drugs will affect Iverhart Max?

Do not give Iverhart Max to your pet if already taking an alternate heartworm medication.

Iverhart Max Directions:
