Atopy is one of the most common causes of allergies in pets, following flea allergy dermatitis. It is caused by the pet's immune system overreacting to substances in the air such as pollen, tobacco smoke, or dust mites. Pets with atopy usually show symptoms of allergies with the changing of seasons (usually in the spring) but can potentially develop year-round allergies.
Symptoms of atopy in dogs or cats:
- Scratching of the nose
- Rubbing nose on the floor
- Chewing the paws
- Scratching the ears
- Shaking the head
- Slight reddening of the affected areas
Reduce allergy symptoms
Administering a pet medication for reducing allergy symptoms such as Atopica and Apoquel can help to provide your pet with relief from allergy symptoms.
Relieve itching
Topical sprays and specially formulated shampoos can relieve itching and inflammation. Also,
Give a fatty acid supplement
Essential fatty acid supplements are believed to help the body produce more anti-inflammatory hormones, which may help to reduce allergies, itching, and inflammation.
Tip
Always consult your veterinarian if your pet's allergy symptoms do not improve.
