Does Trifexis Require a Prescription?

It can be daunting to consider all the parasites you need to protect your dog from every month: those pesky fleas as well as heartworms and a whole host of potential intestinal parasites. Previously, pet parents had to apply a messy topical flea treatment and remember to also give a separate heartworm medication every month. But with the advent of newer prescription pet medications like Trifexis, you can provide comprehensive protection for your dog in a single chewable tablet!

Why do I need a prescription to buy Trifexis?
Trifexis is a chewable beef-flavored tablet that protects your dog from heartworms, kills fleas, and treats and controls hookworms, roundworm and whipworm infections. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determines which human and pet medications require a prescription to dispense. If a drug is felt to be unsafe without veterinary follow-up or monitoring, the FDA will place the medication on prescription-only status. In the case of heartworm prevention, it's important for your veterinarian to determine the heartworm status of your dog before prescribing this type of medication because it can be harmful to give heartworm preventatives to a dog that is positive for heartworm disease. Since Trifexis includes a heartworm preventative, it requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

Is Trifexis made in the U.S.?
Yes. Trifexis is manufactured for Elanco Animal Health, a division of Eli Lilly & Company, in Indianapolis, IN.

How much does Trifexis cost?
Trifexis is for use by dogs 8 weeks of age and older, weighing at least 5 pounds or more. The cost varies depending upon the weight of your dog. Trifexis is available in five different doses: for dogs 5-10 pounds, for dogs 10-20 pounds, for dogs 20-40 pounds, for dogs 40-60 pounds, and for dogs 60-120 pounds. Dogs over 120 pounds will need to take the appropriate combination of sizes. You can order Trifexis in a 6-dose package, or an even more economical 12-dose package.

Where can I buy Trifexis for my dog?
Although Trifexis, like other heartworm preventatives, requires a prescription, the ordering process is easy. Just contact us by telephone at 1-800-738-6337 to speak to one of our friendly customer care representatives, or place your order online, or using our convenient PetMeds® mobile app. Once your order has been placed, our pharmacy department will contact your veterinarian by telephone or fax to quickly obtain the prescription approval for you!
