Dog fleas are external parasites that feast primarily off your dog's blood. Fleas are the leading cause of itchiness in dogs, but some dogs may experience severe reactions from flea bites, due to allergies. Fleas normally concentrate on a dog's tail, neck, and head.
Fleas can hide easily and may be hard to see due to their small size. They can also jump from pet to pet very quickly and hide in carpets, furniture, and upholstery. One way to detect the presence of fleas is to be on the lookout for black flakes, also known as "flea dirt."

Treat your dog's flea infestation by following these steps:

Eradicate the fleas on your dog
Capstar Flea Treatment Tablets begin working within 30 minutes and will kill more than 90% of adult fleas on your dog within four hours. For more relief, bathe your dog with a flea shampoo and use a flea comb such as the Resco Pro Series Flea Comb, which is designed for grooming and removing fleas from your dog's fur.

Treat your home and yard
It is important to not only treat your dog for fleas, but also your home and yard. Fleas can hide in your home's carpet fibers, baseboards, and furniture. Use carpet sprays or room foggers to eliminate flea eggs and larvae that may be hiding in your home. For your yard, use a yard spray, which can easily attach to your garden hose, to treat areas outside where your dog likes to play and explore.

Use a monthly flea preventative to avoid re-infestation
Once your dog is free of fleas, prevent the parasites from coming back by using flea preventatives such as collars, tablets, and topical treatments. New combination oral flea treatments like Trifexis also protect against heartworms in addition to fleas.

Tip

In order to break the flea cycle, it is important to completely remove fleas from all areas of your home and from any other pets in your home.
