What are Denamarin Tablets?

Denamarin Tablets are a nutritional supplement containing the antioxidant Silybin used to improve your pet's liver function by increasing liver glutathione levels. The tablets come in three different strengths; for cats and small dogs, for medium dogs, or for large dogs.

For:

Cats and Dogs

Benefits:

  • Supports healthy liver function by raising antioxidant levels
  • Silybin aids digestion and absorption of nutrients from your pet's diet
  • No known side effects

How do Denamarin Tablets work?

Denamarin combines a pure S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe) with silybin to provide a one-two punch to keep your pets liver healthy. Silybin supports the flow of bile through the liver which helps with the digestion and absorption of nutrients from your pet's diet. Silybin also helps to regenerate liver cells and may enhance levels of glutathione, an antioxidant that helps to protect cells from toxins such as free radicals.

Cautions:

Store in a cool dry place.

Brand Name:

Denamarin

Active Ingredient(s):

S-Adenosylmethionine, Silybin A+B

What is the most important thing I should know about Denamarin Tablets?

Denamarin for dogs and cats is a patented nutritional supplement for veterinary use in dogs and cats. Denamarin combines a pure and stabilized S-Adenosylmethionine with Silybin to provide a multi-faceted approach to liver support.

How should Denamarin Tablets be given?

For cats and small dogs up to 12 pounds give 1 tablet of the small size. For medium dogs 13 to 34 pounds give 1 tablet of the medium size. For large dogs 35 to 65 pounds give 1 tablet of the large size. For large dogs 66 to 120 pounds give 2 tablets of the large size, and for large dogs over 120 pounds give 3 tablets of the large size. The tablets should be given on an empty stomach at least one hour before a meal for optimal absorption, typically one hour before feeding in the morning. For owners who find it difficult to administer tablet(s) to their pets, Denamarin may be disguised in a small bite of food. The number of tablets administered may be gradually reduced, or increased, at any time at the recommendation of your veterinarian. Tablets are sensitive to moisture and extreme heat and should not be split or crumbled.

What are the potential side effects of Denamarin Tablets?

There are no known side effects.

What happens if I overdose my pet on Denamarin Tablets?

Contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room.

Denamarin med

My vet has prescribed Denamarin (small dose) and only 1/4 pill per day. My dog only weighs 5lbs. Is it ok that the pill gets split up into quarters? Will it still be as effective as a whole pill?
Asked by: Anonymous
The usual dose for small dogs under 12 lbs is one tablet daily. However, it is best to go by the dosage your veterinarian prescribes.

Denamarin

I usually give my dog this pill every morning around 6:00 am. and then wait to feed her about an hour or so. I might be going away for a week and will have someone watching her and they might not be able to wait an hour after giving this pill, is that okay? Or can they give it to her when they first come home from work say around 6:00 p.m. and then wait an hour and feed her? Is it really important to wait that hour to feed a dog after giving this pill? I know it says you can give it 2 hours after they eat, so would that be best, but again can it be given in the evening instead of the morning? Also if they forget to give it to her, is that okay? Or should I just skip the week I will be gone and let her go off this pill and then continue with it once I get back, would that be okay? Thank you.
Asked by: Anonymous
Denamarin should be given on an empty stomach at least one hour before a meal for optimal absorption, typically one hour before feeding in the morning. An empty stomach is considered 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal and is recommended for OPTIMAL absorption. Continue morning administration on as close to an empty stomach as possible. Discontinuation is not recommended.

Can Your Dog Go On And Off This Pill

I have to give this pill to my dog and the vet said probably for the rest of her life. If you skip a day or two, is that okay and if so, how many days can you skip without giving it to your dog? I guess I am asking is if it is okay for your dog to go on and off this pill throughout their lives?
Asked by: Anonymous
You would need to speak with your veterinarian about this. He/she would know your pets medical history and if they recommend going on-and-off this medication. Thanks for your question.

Can I crush the denamarin in my dog's food and still get benefit from it?

Your answer about the pet who won't take the denamarin didn't help me. My question is: my dog will NOT take the pill or chewable tabs unless they are crushed in his food. QUESTION: Since this is the ONLY way I can administer any pill except a very small pill cut in half, how much efficacy of the denamarin is lost by putting it in my dog's food? Do I still get some benefit? And, should I go a little higher in the dosage because of the benefit loss by crushing the pill in his food? My dog weighs 16 pounds.
Asked by: Anonymous
Thank you for your question. Per the manufacturer, you are able to crush the Denamarin tablet and it will not reduce the potency; just ensure your furry pal eats this in one sitting.

Take a standard slice of cheese (I use the wrapped slices), divide into 3 equal pieces... roll the pill in one piece... first give your dog a small piece of the same cheese (without the pill)... which gets him interested and then after the first tidbit, give him the cheese with the pill in it... then right after... another small piece so he doesn't have time to think about what is in the cheese he just ate... works for me... good luck.

What affect does this med have on humans?

Asked by: Anonymous
SAM-E is short for s-adenosylmethionine(sp??) which is an amino acid that is used by the liver in all mammals. It's effect on humans would be the same as that in animals. I have found it on the shelf at Whole Foods, but it is not suitable for our fur friends as there is all sorts of other stuff in it too that we wouldn't want to give them

Asked by: Anonymous
Probably not - Denamarin already has the appropriate amout of silymin. Don't know what the pharmacology would be for an excessive amount. Milk thistle on the human market has way too high a concentration, and dividing it up woudl be a pain.

How large (size) is this tablet. My vet gave my boston terrier the chewable. He will not chew it -- I have had to use a pill cutter to cut it into 4 sections. Is the tablet form smaller in size (not in mg.)?
Asked by: Anonymous
my rather large chihuahua will not chew any pill and mostly won't take any pill at all in anything I hide it in, even cheese or peanut butter! I hide the small size denamarin in some of the Hills LD food. It's sticky and "packs" well(think like a snowball) so she eats it and doesn't know it!! It's the only way I can get this down her and she has to have it! She's now 12 and holding!

it is taking to long to dissolve in my cat... I was told i am able to crush it and give it through the feeding tube with warm water ,,, is this true?

and do i still have to wait the 1 hr for absorbtion

The tablets should be given on an empty stomach at least one hour before a meal for optimal absorption, typically one hour before feeding in the morning. For owners who find it difficult to administer tablet(s) to their pets, Denamarin may be disguised in a small bite of food. Tablets are sensitive to moisture and extreme heat and should not be split or crumbled.

Is it OK to give large dog, 65 lbs, denamarin tablet in a teaspoon full of peanut butter?

Golden 65lbs takes Denamarin but has difficulty swallowing pill whole w/o chewing. I can get her to cooperate if I coat it in a teaspoon of PB, however, does this interfere with the empty stomach requirement?

Is 1/2 tablet for medium dogs too much for a cat?

Asked by: Anonymous
Yes. It would be too much for a cat. 1/2 of the medium tablet would be stronger than a whole tablet for the cat strength.

What is the size of this pill? (The dosage for a 6 pound cat)

Asked by: Anonymous
Denamarin for Cats and Small Dogs is made so that a pet 12 pounds or less can easily take the product. While you cannot break or crush the tablet, you can place it in a very small amount of food to make it easier to give to the pet.

Joan, the recommended dose for dogs from 35 - 65 pounds is 1 tablet of the large dog size tablet daily.

Do I need an additional supplement of Milk Thistle?

My vet recommended that my dog (48 lb) take about 800mg of milk thistle daily, and 400mg of sam-e daily. I'm interested in trying Denamarin due to all the great reviews, but am wondering if I should additionally supplement with extra milk thistle?
Asked by: Anonymous
Probably not - Denamarin already has the appropriate amout of silymin. Don't know what the pharmacology would be for an excessive amount. Milk thistle on the human market has way too high a concentration, and dividing it up woudl be a pain.

See a specialist. It is expensive but that is the only way to find out what is exactly going on and how to fix it.

Denamarin TABLETS
