Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best medicine ever! My pup is allergic to all bug bites...gave him one and 15-20 minutes later he was napping in peace. No more scratching!! Miracle pill! And yes, giving the pill is a monthly struggle to both my boys but it is well worth it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from We’re happy, loyal customers! Beso has been on Trifexis since he was a puppy- he is now 14 and doesn’t know what a bite or itch is ! Is is also safe enough to let him keep playing with his cat friends, and it has never given him an upset stomach.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works very well/ my Lab hates it. I've been giving this to my dogs a long time and it works! I have a hard time getting them to take it. Can't say I blame them it smells bad and you can't cover it up with nothing. I have to pry my dogs mouth open and put it in his mouth and rub his throat till he swallows it. It is a battle ever month. Nothing covers the smell not anything I can find.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Smelly pill Works well however it has a smell my fur baby don't like so we do fight every month to get him to take it. Dosen't matter what I try to hide it in so end up having to pry his mouth open and shoving the pill in and holding his mouth shut and massaging his throat till he swallows

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product So glad I found 1-800 PetMed to buy this from, It was starting to hurt my pocketbook each month buying it from the vet. I'm also going to order it earlier when I can get a bigger discount :). Bentley's been taking this product since he was a puppy and has had no ill effects. He doesn't like taking it, can smell it a mile away, but we get it down his throat where he can't give it back to us. Never had fleas or ticks. Just make sure you give them plenty to eat as it says in the directions.. we even spoil Bentley with an extra big biscuit that day before giving it to him.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not Palatable for all Canines I must say, this product works well. No fleas, no tick and no hear worm. However, it is not palatable for all canines. Hence my 4 star review. My dog despises the taste and it's a chore to get him to take it. I have tried everything from covering it with peanut butter, breaking it up covering it with a wee bit of coconut oil or pumpkin and hiding it in his food (he eats everything and leaves the Trifexis pieces behind). My last result was consulting with his vet who advised I can cut it down into 4 smaller pieces, and give it to him like medicine, but after the first one, he outsmarts me and doesn't swallow the other pieces, as I later find them spit out and hidden. So, his vet said it was OK to give it to him all at once, but I must say it's a very large pill to swallow.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Proceed with Caution I have a 12lb Pomeranian who I have been giving Trifexis to for the past 3 years. Friends and family informed me that Trifexis always made their dogs sick but I never had any issues and my vet said it was ok, so I continued giving it to him. I just received a new order in October and when I gave it to my dog about a week later he became very sick. So sick that his liver enzymes were so elevated he needed a week of IV fluids and eventually surgery. Non of the various vets and surgeons can tell tell me if it is related to Trifexis but I will not be giving my dog this again. He is still very sick and is very cautious taking anything that may have a pill.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job! We've used Trifexis for almost 7 years on our Corgi Lab mix. She doesn't have heartworms, so it does the job. She hates taking the pill, however. We have to trick her every month to get her to eat it.I wish they had a flavoring or something that made her want to eat it. Even pill pockets don't work. We have to wrap the pill in peanut butter or meat to trick her into eating it.

If I have the 5-10 lb, but need the 20 lb, can I give him 2 of the 5-10 lb instead?

Hi I ordered. Trifexis for my sm. Chihuahua that weighs between 5-10 and they sent me tablet for 20-40lb can I just give part of tablet

Asked by: Christine
Unfortunately, no because the tablet is not scored and the active ingredient may not be evenly distributed through the tablet which could result in an overdose or underdose each month. I recommend you contact the company you purchased the medication from to see if they will swap it out for the proper size.

My dog weights 26 pounds and I have already bought the 40 - 60 pounds 6 month supply. Can he still take the one chewable tablet once a month or should I give him half.

Asked by: Kreg22
Unfortunately, no you can't give 1/2 tablet as the amount of active ingredients will not be sufficient to protect your dog. Your dog requires 560 mg Spinosad and 9.3 mg Milbemycin oxime. One half of the 40-60 pound tablet only has 405 mg Spinosad and 6.75 mg Milbemycin oxime. In addition, since the tablets are not scored, the ingredients may not be evenly distributed in the tablet.

Why in the world does it take a prescription for heartworm preventative. I have raised dogs for years and used to always buy it over the counter. This sounds ridiculous!

Forgot to mention, Trifexis contains another ingredient for flea control which also requires a veterinarian's prescription due to IT's potential side effects and cautions, such as it can not be used on dogs that have seizures.

We got Trifexis today for my J.R. terrier. The vet said I need to give tick protection separately. Some reviewers say their dog has been free of fleas & ticks when using Trifexis. Was it a different formula? What do I use just for ticks?

Asked by: Linda
Trifexis is a chewable tablet that kills fleas and prevents infestations, protects against heartworms, and treats and controls adult hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm infections. It does not protect against ticks. Bravecto, Nexgard or a Seresto collar may be used in combination with Trifexis.

Since the tablet is not scored, you can't be sure the medication is evenly distributed in the tablet so you could potentially overdose your dog one month and underdose the next. It is best to purchase the proper sized medication for each dog.

What is Trifexis® (spinosad + milbemycin oxime)?

Trifexis is a chewable tablet that kills fleas and prevents infestations, protects against heartworms, and treats and controls adult hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm infections. This tasty, beef-flavored tablet is easy to give your dog to protect against multiple parasites with one medication. Trifexis chewable tablets are for monthly use in dogs and puppies 8 weeks of age and older and 5 lbs of body weight or more. Trifexis requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

For:

Dogs (8+ weeks of age, weighing 5+ lbs)

Benefits:

  • Provides 3-in-1 parasite protection against heartworm, fleas, and intestinal parasites.
  • Begins killing biting fleas within 30 minutes
  • Kills fleas before they can lay eggs
  • Prevents heartworm disease
  • Treats and controls roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms
  • Artificial beef-flavored tablet
  • Easy-to-administer chewable tablet

How does Trifexis work?

Spinosad, an active ingredient in Trifexis, starts to work within 30 minutes to kill fleas and has been proven to kill 100% of all biting fleas within 4 hours. Trifexis prevents heartworm disease by killing microfilariae and larvae from maturing into adult heartworms.

Cautions:

Serious adverse reactions have been reported following concomitant extra-label use of ivermectin with spinosad alone, one of the components of Trifexis chewable tablets. Treatment with fewer than three monthly doses after the last exposure to mosquitoes may not provide complete heartworm prevention. Prior to administration, dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infection. Use with caution in breeding females. The safe use of Trifexis in breeding males has not been evaluated. Use with caution in dogs with pre-existing epilepsy. Puppies less than 14 weeks of age may experience a higher rate of vomiting. Consult your veterinarian for pregnant or lactating dogs.

Brand Name:

Trifexis (Elanco Animal Health)

Spinosad and Milbemycin oxime

What is the most important thing I should know about Trifexis?

Trifexis is a prescription medication FDA approved for use in dogs 8 weeks of age or older and 5 lbs of body weight or more. Trifexis contains spinosad and milbemycin oxime and is indicated for the prevention of heartworm disease. Trifexis kills fleas and is indicated for the prevention and treatment of flea infestations, and the treatment and control of adult hookworm, adult roundworm, and adult whipworm infections. For dogs over 120 lbs, give the appropriate combination of tablets.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Trifexis to my pet?

Tell your veterinarian if you are planning on breeding your pet. Tell your veterinarian if your dog has a history of seizures (epilepsy).

How should Trifexis be given?

Give Trifexis chewable tablets once a month with food. Trifexis chewable tablets may be chewed, offered in food, or administered like other tablet medications. If vomiting occurs within 1 hour of administration, redose your pet with another full dose. Consult your veterinarian for pregnant or lactating dogs.

What are the potential side effects of Trifexis?

Side effects that may occur include vomiting. If vomiting occurs within one hour of administration, redose with another full dose. Other side effects may occur. Continue giving Trifexis chewable tablets and talk to your veterinarian if your pet experiences decreased appetite, lethargy or decreased activity, diarrhea, cough, increased thirst, vocalization, increased appetite, itching, hyperactivity. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or especially bothersome to your pet. The use of ivermectin at higher than FDA-approved doses at the same time as Trifexis can result in serious side effects.

What happens if I miss giving a dose of Trifexis?

Give the missed dose with food as soon as you remember and resume a monthly dosing schedule.

What happens if I overdose my pet on Trifexis?

Overdose of this medication is unlikely. However, if an overdose is suspected, contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room. Symptoms of overdose that may occur include vomiting.

What should I avoid while giving Trifexis to my pet?

Your pet may maintain normal activities and interactions while being given Trifexis. The safe use of Trifexis chewable tablets in male dogs intended for breeding has not been established.
