Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great Pills - Lousy Service I have three dogs in the same weight range. When it's time to order new pills, I have to juggle their names through the ordering process because 1800PetMeds isn't smart enough to realize that I don't place a separate order for each dog - I just use the same pills in a pack for my dogs. Recently, I received an email to refill my prescription for one of my dogs by name. Yet that got rejected because he had an order for a 12 pack of the pills a little while ago. Well, so what? Does it not occur to 1800PetMeds that the dog needs the same pill every month? What difference does it make if I want to order 6 more pills so I don't run out? When this happens, I have to cancel my existing order and then place a new order. Just did that, and now the price is higher one day later. The price for these pills keeps changing from one order to the next. It used to be $97 and now it's $121. The discount coupons keep coming and expiring, so you can never plan for a consistent price. I tried to call, but they have a voice-tree system that insures you never actually get to speak to a person. This may be my last order with 1800PetMeds because I'm tired of this nonsense.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Only "GOOD" Because...... This medication is actually a wonderful medication. It helps two of my dogs with whatever they are allergic too along with the heart worm and flea protection. I will say it is only, "Good" because when you get to the bigger dosage the pill is HUGE. I have two dogs that weigh over 75 lbs. I have to cut their pills in half and play Vet Tech to push it to the back of their throats to swallow. Thank goodness they are easy to split. If you are not used to giving animals pills when they are extremely large, try something else. I say this because if I were to take something this large, I would have to split it into 3 pieces just to be able to take the medication. The size for the 40 to 60 lbs is not much smaller. As for the smaller size pups, MUCH smaller pill and easy to give. The "beef flavor" a few like and others don't. That is a hit or miss. After all, I am giving 5 doses of this medication because there are 5 dogs in my household with different size ranges.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fleas start dying off immediately! Our dogs have been taking this for years now. The first time I gave it to them I pretended it was a treat & they take it like it’s a treat. Our newest dog really doesn’t like it. He constantly spits it out, but because he thinks it’s a treat; he dutifully eats it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy, fast, and less expensive!! We placed an order for the first time. We had seen numerous commercials but never ordered anything until covid-19 came on the scene. We ordered on line, answered the questions, and 1800petmeds Didi the rest. It was easy, the order arrived timely, and it was less expensive than buying from our vet! Will order all future medicines for our large boeroboel, Hemi from 1800petmeds!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Explanation of pill scoring-or lack thereof... Just wanted to explain pill scoring and why the large pill isn’t scored after reading several reviews. I know it makes it easier to cut; but the score in a pill actually has a functional purpose as well as a scientific. When you have a pill that isn’t scored it means that if you cut that pill in half, there is no guarantee that the same amount of medication is in both sides of the pill. Essentially you could have one side medication and the other side all filler-probably isn’t ever going to happen that way, but that is why the medication is scored. If there is one score then you can cut it in half and know you’re getting the same amount of meds with each side within a given margin approved by the big wigs of big pharma and the FDA. Scored twice? You can cut the pill into four pieces with the same guarantee...this is why, even though it would be much easier-it would be a pharmaceutical issue that could potentially cause problems if a dog were taking this each month and only took half and wasn’t covered one month because it took 2 months worth of medication in one month...goofy, but it is what it is...womp womp wooooomp.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Been using on my shepherd for the past 5 years, works great to prevent fleas and other pests! FEEDING TIP: Peanut butter! It disguises the smell. I break the pill into small pieces, cover each piece in peanut butter REALLY WELL, then tear off little pieces of bread, and put in the coated pill between two pieces to make tiny peanut butter sandwiches for her... it’s the only way I’ve been able to trick her into taking it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thanks Petmeds!! The price at my Vet’s kept going up and up. I checked online with your company And found a more reasonable price. The problem was with my vet not being willing to confirm the prescription or send a copy To petmed. During covid stay at home, I had to call and ask them to give it to me, go pick it up, then complete the mailing and go to the post office to mail. I had the package within a week of mailing. you were Great!!! And Sazzy loved the cookie. Thank you.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great Trifexis works great for keeping flees and tics off, and keeping him safe from heart worm. But, getting Shadow to take it is a HUGE problem, he hates the taste. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Why not tablets for giant dogs? This works, although my Newfoundland hates the taste and smell. (cover any exposed surfaces with butter immediately. Wear gloves and remove them before feeding the dog.) Why can't Triflexis make a dosage for dogs over 120 pounds? It is extremely expensive to have to purchase two pills. I feel I am paying for packaging and profit since the cost of sizes only increases by a few dollars. Why can't they at least score the top of the large pill so it can be cut accurately. This company has a drug that works so they don't seem to feel the need to be responsive to customers.

My Great Dane is 9 months old and already weighs 120 to 130, does the larger weight mean I have to buy 2 products instead of the one? 2 different weight scales?

Asked by: Kashsmom19
Yes. For the super large breed dogs, you will give the 60-120 pound dose plus the dose to cover the remainder of the weight. For example a 150 pound dog would get one 60-120 # dose plus one 20-40 pound dose to cover the remaining 30 pounds.

Hi I ordered. Trifexis for my sm. Chihuahua that weighs between 5-10 and they sent me tablet for 20-40lb can I just give part of tablet

Asked by: Christine
Unfortunately, no because the tablet is not scored and the active ingredient may not be evenly distributed through the tablet which could result in an overdose or underdose each month. I recommend you contact the company you purchased the medication from to see if they will swap it out for the proper size.

My dog weights 26 pounds and I have already bought the 40 - 60 pounds 6 month supply. Can he still take the one chewable tablet once a month or should I give him half.

Asked by: Kreg22
Unfortunately, no you can't give 1/2 tablet as the amount of active ingredients will not be sufficient to protect your dog. Your dog requires 560 mg Spinosad and 9.3 mg Milbemycin oxime. One half of the 40-60 pound tablet only has 405 mg Spinosad and 6.75 mg Milbemycin oxime. In addition, since the tablets are not scored, the ingredients may not be evenly distributed in the tablet.

What is Trifexis® (spinosad + milbemycin oxime)?

Trifexis is a chewable tablet that kills fleas and prevents infestations, protects against heartworms, and treats and controls adult hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm infections. This tasty, beef-flavored tablet is easy to give your dog to protect against multiple parasites with one medication. Trifexis chewable tablets are for monthly use in dogs and puppies 8 weeks of age and older and 5 lbs of body weight or more. Trifexis requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

For:

Dogs (8+ weeks of age, weighing 5+ lbs)

Benefits:

  • Provides 3-in-1 parasite protection against heartworm, fleas, and intestinal parasites.
  • Begins killing biting fleas within 30 minutes
  • Kills fleas before they can lay eggs
  • Prevents heartworm disease
  • Treats and controls roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms
  • Artificial beef-flavored tablet
  • Easy-to-administer chewable tablet

How does Trifexis work?

Spinosad, an active ingredient in Trifexis, starts to work within 30 minutes to kill fleas and has been proven to kill 100% of all biting fleas within 4 hours. Trifexis prevents heartworm disease by killing microfilariae and larvae from maturing into adult heartworms.

Cautions:

Serious adverse reactions have been reported following concomitant extra-label use of ivermectin with spinosad alone, one of the components of Trifexis chewable tablets. Treatment with fewer than three monthly doses after the last exposure to mosquitoes may not provide complete heartworm prevention. Prior to administration, dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infection. Use with caution in breeding females. The safe use of Trifexis in breeding males has not been evaluated. Use with caution in dogs with pre-existing epilepsy. Puppies less than 14 weeks of age may experience a higher rate of vomiting. Consult your veterinarian for pregnant or lactating dogs.

Brand Name:

Trifexis (Elanco Animal Health)

Spinosad and Milbemycin oxime

How should Trifexis be given?

What are the potential side effects of Trifexis?

Side effects that may occur include vomiting. If vomiting occurs within one hour of administration, redose with another full dose. Other side effects may occur. Continue giving Trifexis chewable tablets and talk to your veterinarian if your pet experiences decreased appetite, lethargy or decreased activity, diarrhea, cough, increased thirst, vocalization, increased appetite, itching, hyperactivity. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or especially bothersome to your pet. The use of ivermectin at higher than FDA-approved doses at the same time as Trifexis can result in serious side effects.

What happens if I miss giving a dose of Trifexis?

Give the missed dose with food as soon as you remember and resume a monthly dosing schedule.

What happens if I overdose my pet on Trifexis?

Overdose of this medication is unlikely. However, if an overdose is suspected, contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room. Symptoms of overdose that may occur include vomiting.

What should I avoid while giving Trifexis to my pet?
