What is Revolution?

Revolution is a safe and simple monthly topical medication used to protect your dog or cat from heartworms, fleas, and ear mites. Revolution is also used on dogs for the treatment or prevention of fleas, the American Dog Tick, ear mites, and canine sarcoptic mange. When used on cats it is also used to treat or prevent fleas, ear mites, hookworms, and roundworms. Revolution requires a prescription from your veterinarian. (3 Pack = 3 doses which lasts 3 months.)

For:

Dogs (6 weeks of age or older and no weight requirement), Cats (8 weeks of age or older and no weight requirement)

Benefits:

  • Protects your pet from heartworms and fleas
  • Fights both internal and surface parasitic infections
  • Treats Sarcoptic mange in dogs
  • Treats and controls ear mites
  • Controls American Dog Tick infestation
  • Treats and controls roundworms and hookworms in cats
  • Only administered once a month
  • Safe and easy to use

How does Revolution work?

Revolution works by penetrating the skin and entering your pet's bloodstream. Concentrations of selamectin, the active ingredient, in the tissue and bloodstream prevent heartworm disease. Selamectin also redistributes into the skin from the bloodstream and kills adult fleas, American dog ticks, and ear mites, and prevents flea eggs from hatching. It is also an anthelmintic, which means it fights to expel parasitic worms. Parasites ingest the drug when they feed on the animal's blood. Revolution is safe for pregnant and lactating pets.

Cautions:

Side effects are uncommon, with less than 1% of dogs showing signs of digestive upsets. It is not advisable to use Revolution in pets that are ill or underweight. Collies and herding dog breeds may have a reaction to the ingredient selamectin if given over the recommended dosage amount. If your dog is a collie or other herding dog breed and your veterinarian has prescribed Revolution, we urge you to monitor your pet for 8 hours and call your vet if your dog displays any signs of weakness, staggering, dilated pupils, trembling, drooling, or pressing his or her head against a wall.

What is the most important information I should know about Revolution?

Revolution is a prescription medication applied topically once a month. Do not use Revolution on puppies under 6 weeks of age or kittens under 8 weeks of age. According to the product literature, Revolution is safe for use on pregnant or lactating dogs and cats.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before applying Revolution on my pet?

Tell your veterinarian if your pet has ever had an allergic reaction to the medication.

How should Revolution medication be used?

Apply Revolution exactly as directed by your veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions ask your pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Revolution is available as unit of use applicator tubes containing the specific amount of medication based on the weight of your pet. Revolution is available as a 15mg/0.25ml puppy/kitten dose for puppies older than 6 weeks and kittens older than 8 weeks weighing up to 5 lbs. Revolution is also available for cats 5.1-15 lbs (45mg/0.75ml), 15.1-22 lbs (60mg/1ml), and for dogs 5.1-10 lbs (30mg/0.25ml), dogs 10.1-20 lbs (60mg/0.5ml), 20.1-40 lbs (120mg/1 ml), 40-1-85 lbs (240mg/2 ml) and 85.1-130 lbs (360mg/3ml). For dogs over 130 lbs use the appropriate combination of tubes. The entire contents of the tube should be used. Do not split the contents as the accuracy of the dose and effectiveness of the medication cannot be assured. Bathing or shampooing your pet 2 or more hours after treatment will not reduce the effectiveness of Revolution. Keep this medication away from children and pets.

What happens if I miss applying a dose of Revolution?

Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. Do not give a double dose of the medication.

What happens if I overdose my pet on Revolution?

Seek emergency veterinary medical treatment. Symptoms of overdose, while rare, may include salivation and lack of coordination, as well as symptoms listed below as side effects.

What should I avoid while using Revolution on my pet?

Because humans can contract hookworms from animals, it is important to maintain good personal hygiene. It is also important to eliminate fleas on your pet and in the household and to not feed your pet rodents or uncooked meat or fish. To prevent reinfection, daily cleanup of stools is recommended. Do not use on sick, weak, or underweight animals. Do not apply to wet hair. Dogs should be tested for heartworms prior to using Revolution. In humans, Revolution may be irritating to skin and eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after applying Revolution to your pet.

What are the possible side effects of Revolution?

Side effects of Revolution that may occur include temporary hair loss at the site of application, loss of appetite, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, and muscle tremors.

What other drugs will affect Revolution?

Do not apply Revolution to your pet if already giving an alternate heartworm medication. When switching from another heartworm medication, begin Revolution when the next dose of the heartworm medication is due.

How to Use

Revolution Directions:

  • Revolution is a prescription medication.
  • Apply Revolution once a month on the same day of each month year round.
  • Use the entire contents of the tube. Do not split the contents since the dose and therefore the effectiveness of the product can be reduced.
  • Part your pet's hair at the base of the neck between the shoulder blades until you can see the skin, and place the tip of the tube on the skin.
  • Apply the contents of the tube to a single spot on the skin at the base of the neck between the shoulder blades.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Topical Medication This is the only brand that works for flea control and prevention on my cats. My oldest had bad allergies to fleas and her hair would falling out in patches near her hives. In Louisiana, the fleas are particularly bad. There has only been one time in the last 10 years of purchasing where I received a 'bad batch', but 1800PetMeds promptly offered me a refund/new pack of medication.

my 14 year old cat has licked/chewed her fur since taking this med. never had an issue before. can med cause this?

Asked by: purrhartsw
Thanks for your question. If your pet had fleas before she was started on the medication, it could be that the fleas are dying which is causing her to chew and lick her fur. It's also possible that the medication is irritating to her. If the unusual behavior continues, please consult your veterinarian.

Can Revolution be used in conjunction with Frontline Plus? More info:  Cats, 8-10lbs, dosing 2 weeks apart, following application directions

Asked by: Callie
Thank you for your question. It is not recommended to use both Frontline Plus and Revolution unless directed by your veterinarian. You would essentially be double dosing on flea control. The Revolution for cats treats or prevent fleas, ear mites, heartworms, hookworms and roundworms. Frontline Plus for cats is just a flea and tick preventative.

Asked by: Nona
Thank you for your question. Revolution does not kill all ticks, it only controls American Dog Tick infestation.

My dog is on revolution for lice. I have his first dose 4 days ago. How long until he’s no longer itchy?

Asked by: Meagan
Thank you for your question. Lice will lay eggs, and it takes 2-4 weeks for an egg to hatch and turn into an adult; therefore, it should be reapplied every two weeks for three treatments or as directed by your veterinarian in order to kill off the nits that just hatched. Also be sure to wash any bedding/fabric that your dog has come into contact with. Throw away any grooming equipment. Keep your dog away from any interactions or contact for at least 4 weeks of treatment have passed.

My dog is right at 5 lbs, is it better to use the 0-5 lb dose or the 5-10 lb dose?

Asked by: David
Thank you for your question. If your furry friend is exactly 5lbs you would give the 0-5lbs dose. If your furry friend is 5.1lbs or more the appropriate dose would be 5-10lbs, unless otherwise prescribed by your veternarian.
