A woman holding an armful of eight week old tabby kittens born during summer kitten season

Have you been waiting for the purrfect time to adopt a kitten? In regions that have hot summers and cold winters, summertime brings an influx of kittens in shelters ready to be adopted.
In honor of Adopt-A-Cat Month, learn why June is the best month to adopt a kitten and all about the purrks of bringing home a new cat (or two!) this summer.

1. Your local shelter or rescue is likely overrun with kittens.

Cats go into heat every few weeks during the spring and summer, so there’s always an influx of kittens being born between March and October. By June, it’s peak kitten season in many states. While some facilities are “no-kill,” others may have to euthanize adoptable pets when there’s simply no room for them. By adopting a kitten, you’ll free up space and resources for other pets in need.

2. You’re more likely to be matched with your dream kitten.

Waiting for the right pet to come along? In the summertime, you’re sure to meet your perfect match. Whether you’re holding out for a clingy calico or a talkative tabby, chances are you’ll find the cat of your dreams during kitten season.

3. You can take home the purrfect pair.

In the summertime, you’re more likely to find bonded sibling pairs that their adopters intend to send to the same home. Sibling pairs are already bonded and spend all day entertaining one another. Bonded pairs tend to get into less mischief as their siblings keep them from getting bored and lonely. Plus, it’s tons of fun to watch them play and grow up together.

4. You might have more time for a new kitten in the summer.

With many of us on school breaks and work vacations, summertime is a great time to spend time at home with a brand new kitten. You and your family might have more time to prepare your home, kitten-proof around the house, and spend time getting to know your new addition.

5. You’ll have a seasoned snuggle buddy by wintertime.

By the time winter rolls around, your summer kitten will be around six months old. They’ll have grown a lot since the summer and their coat will have filled out, making them toasty-warm and snuggly on cold winter nights.
At this age, your kitten will still be very playful, but they’ll have become more independent. If you’ll be traveling this winter to escape the cold or to visit family, your kitten will be old enough to stay with a pet sitter - or travel with you! You can also look forward to shopping for their very first catnip toys as gifts, as their sensitivity to the herb will soon start to kick in.

Ready To Adopt A Summer Kitten (Or Two)?

Before you adopt, make sure your home is kitten-proofed and you’re stocked up on essential kitten supplies. If you’ve already got an older cat, read up on how to introduce a second cat.

You can find adoptable summer kittens at your local shelter or through a cat rescue, or look for upcoming adoption events near you. Keep an eye on local happenings like Adopt-A-Cat month adoption events or discounted or waived adoption fees coming up this summer. Now it’s time to get excited - your summertime of cuteness is about to begin!
