What is Prednisolone Compounded?

Prednisolone is a corticosteroid used to treat various inflammatory and allergy conditions as well as other diseases, such as Addison's disease. Compounding is beneficial in instances where a specific dosage is unavailable or in different forms to make it easier to dose your pet. Prednisolone Compounded requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

For:

Dogs & Cats

Benefits:
  • Treats a wide range of inflammatory and auto-immune conditions
  • Remedies swelling and itchy skin caused by allergies
  • Reduces redness, itching, and allergic reactions affecting the eyes
How it works:

Prednisolone is a corticosteroid, which suppresses the inflammatory response to a variety of agents. Prednisolone can also be used as an immunosuppressive drug for organ transplants and in cases of adrenal insufficiency (Addison's disease).

Cautions:

Without first talking to your veterinarian, don't give your pet any over-the-counter or other prescription medications while giving prednisolone. There are possible side effects, including insomnia, nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, and fatigue. Tell your veterinarian if your pet has kidney or liver disease, heart disease, stomach ulcers, hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus, or any other medical conditions.

How to Use
Directions:
  • Prednisolone is a prescription corticosteroid that is used in dogs and cats to treat various conditions such as Addison's disease, inflammation from arthritis, allergies and certain autoimmune diseases.
  • Prednisolone reduces swelling and decreases a pet's ability to fight infections.
  • Give Prednisolone with food to lessen stomach upset.
Tip:

Prednisolone should not be stopped suddenly. There should be a gradual reduction in dosage before stopping.

What is compound medication
What is a Compounded Medication?

A compounded medication is the creation of a particular medication to fit the unique needs of a patient, including changing the form of the medication (e.g., from a solid pill to a liquid) for a variety reasons (e.g., to make it easier to take, to avoid a non-essential ingredient, to obtain the exact dose needed, adding favorite flavors).

If you are having difficulty giving your pet prescribed medication or need to find a discontinued medication, 1-800-PetMeds offers compounding services on select medications. We can prepare the following: (1) custom strength quantities of a medication (as capsules, liquid, chewable tablets, or transdermal (absorbed through the skin); (2) dosage forms to mask bitter or unpleasant taste (such as capsules or chewable tablets that can also be flavored); (3) dosage forms to make it easier to dose your pet such as a transdermal or liquid (that can also be flavored); and (4) discontinued products such as cisapride or DES.

Customer Reviews
Prednisolone Compounded is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product saved our kitty's discomfort! Our kitty was diagnosed with asthma a few years ago and had been on prednisone shots and liquid meds that eventually became unsuccessful. We found this product a few weeks ago and decided to try it. We were at our wits end trying to find other ways to help our cat. Ever since day one of using it, our cat completely stopped having asthma attacks. COMPLETELY!!! We went from multiple attacks a day (many of them at night which woke us up feeling helpless and sad for our baby) to ZERO! She is comfortable and content. What's even better is that she loves taking her medicine. You can't complain with a chewable tuna flavored "treat!" There are no pills to swallow disguised in a pill pocket, just medicine in a treat form We are so thankful for this product's 100% effectiveness and our kitty is so happy.

Q&A

Current Prednisolone flavoring options (April 2015)?

(1) Can the Prednisolone chewtabs still be flavored these days (April 2015)? If yes, then (2) is fish the only available flavor, or are there other options (this is for a cat)? Also, (3) how much (if anything) does flavoring add to the cost?
Asked by: Peter
The prednisolone chewtabs are available in either fish or chicken flavoring. There is no additional cost to you but if you prefer 1 flavor over the other you would need to contact us at 1800Petmeds to specify this.

Prednisolone 20mg chewtab - cut in 4 pieces?

Can the 20mg tab be cut in 4 pieces easily? Given the prices are the same for 5mg, 10mg, 20mg are the same, i would like to save on overall cost. Do you know of any issues switching from generic prednisolone 5mg tablets to compounded version? Thank you, Nadya.
Asked by: TiZ
I purchased the 20mg tab and, because they are soft, are easily cut into pieces. I use an Exacto knife, as it gives me a more precise cut. I only cut up 1 at a time, as they do tend to disintegrate, a bit, if over-handled. I keep the pieces in a small ziptop bag. Fortunately, you can also roll the pieces up, for easy pilling, if your pet doesn't want to eat the piece. However, mine was happy with the chicken flavored tab.
