Treating Your Cat's Ear Infections

Do you suspect that your cat has an ear infection? While pawing at the ear and shaking of the head are usually signs your cat may have an ear infection, there are a few other symptoms that should raise concern:

  • Loss of balance
  • Strong odor from the ears
  • Hearing loss
  • Redness of the ear flap with or without swelling
  • Yellow or brown discharge in the ear

Follow the steps below to treat your cat's ear infection and ease his or her discomfort.

Cat ear infections should be treated promptly before the condition worsens.

Try a Natural Ear Infection Remedy for Your Cat

An ear infection remedy such as Zymox Otic Enzymatic Solution varies from traditional ear infection remedies. It is available without a prescription and contains three different enzymes that create an antimicrobial formula to treat ear infections caused by bacteria and yeast. If your cat has inflamed and itchy ears as a result of the infection, we recommend Zymox Otic Enzymatic Solution with Hydrocortisone, which helps to relieve itching.

Treat Your Cat's Ear Infection with Antibiotics

If natural remedies such as Zymox don't work, consider getting a prescription from your veterinarian. For more severe ear infections, treatments containing anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties are available by prescription from your veterinarian. Please note, these stronger medications can have a side effect of hearing loss.

Prevent Cat Ear Infections with Routine Cleaning

Preventing ear infections in your cat can save your cat pain and constant itching. Begin by checking your cat's ears for odor, redness, or discharge. The inside of your cat's ear should be a pale pink color and free of unusual odors or wax buildup. Using ear cleansers, such as 1-800-PetMeds Ear Cleansing Solution, on a regular basis can help reduce the occurrence of ear infections.

Molly's Tip: Keep your cat's ears clean and check any signs of scratching for mites. While it is not typical for cats to get ear infections, they can be painful if not treated quickly.
