What is Drontal Plus?

Drontal Plus is a broad-spectrum dewormer used in dogs to treat tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. Drontal Plus requires a prescription, and is sold per tablet.

For:

Dogs (weighing over 2 lbs and 3 weeks of age)

Benefits:
  • Proven to eliminate the most common intestinal parasites (tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms)
  • Chewable tablets are easy to give
  • Given as a single dose
How it Works:

Drontal's active ingredients are praziquantel, pyrantel pamoate and febantel. Praziquantel works by damaging the parasite's skin internally, so the parasite disintegrates and is removed by the pet's immune system. Pyrantel pamoate is active against hookworms and ascarids and acts as a depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent, causing sudden contraction, followed by paralysis. This results in the hookworm losing its grip in the intestinal wall and is removed from the pets system by natural process. Febantel is active against nematode parasites including whipworms.

Cautions:

Side effects of Drontal Plus are rare but may include vomiting, loss of appetite, or diarrhea. Other side effects may also occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any unusual or bothersome side effects that may occur.

Brand Name:

Drontal Plus (Bayer)

Generic Name:

Praziquantel (pra-zee-kwan'-tell) with pyrantel pamoate and febantel

What is Drontal Plus:

Drontal Plus is a broad spectrum dewormer used in the treatment of tapeworms, hookworms and roundworms and whipworms in dogs.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Drontal Plus to my pet:

Tell your veterinarian if your pet has ever had an allergic reaction to the medication. Tapeworm is a zoonotic infection meaning humans can contract tapeworm from animals. Discuss the importance of maintaining good personal hygiene.

What is the most important information I should know about Drontal Plus:

Drontal Plus is a prescription medication FDA approved for use in dogs and puppies at least 3 weeks old and weighing at least 2 lbs. Drontal Plus is available as 22.7mg scored chewable tablets for small dogs (2-25 lbs), 68mg scored chewable tablets for medium dogs (26-60 lbs), and 136mg scored chewable tablets for large dogs (45 lbs and over).

How should this medication be given:

Give Drontal Plus exactly as directed by the veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Drontal Plus is given as a single dose. The usual dose of small dog tablets (22.7mg) for dogs 2-4 lbs is 1/2 tablet, 5-7 lbs is 1 tablet, 8-12 lbs is 1 1/2 tablets, 13-18 lbs is 2 tablets and 19-25 lbs is 2 1/2 tablets. Fasting is neither necessary nor recommended. Store Drontal Plus at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep out of the reach of children and pets.

What happens if I miss giving a dose:

Drontal Plus tablets are given as a single dose.

What should I avoid while giving Drontal Plus to my pet:

Do not give Drontal Plus to dogs allergic to it or any of the individual ingredients. Because humans can contract tapeworm from animals, it is important to maintain good personal hygiene. It is also important to eliminate fleas on the pet and in the household and to not feed the pet rodents or uncooked meat or fish. To prevent reinfection, daily cleanup of stools is recommended.

What are the possible side effects of Drontal Plus:

Side effects of Drontal Plus are rare but may include vomiting, loss of appetite or diarrhea. Other side effects may also occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to the animal.

What other drugs will affect Drontal Plus:

Do not give Drontal Plus to your pet if already giving an alternate dewormer medication unless directed to by your veterinarian.

Drontal Plus is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product We have been using this as a worm preventative on our dogs for 10 years. Every six months. None of our dogs have had a worm issue in those 10 years. Many of our neighbors dogs have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works When I got my first puppy she had tapeworms wiggling in her feces. Vet prescribed Drontal Plus and the worms cleared immediately! Now I have a second puppy 1 year later and he had tapeworms AND roundworms and once again we were prescribed Drontal Plus. It's a great product but make sure to clean your animals living area with bleach to kill eggs and larvae so they don't get reinfected after the medication wears off and to do a followup to get any newly hatched worms.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from not sure I have a 4 1/2 mo Norwich terrier puppy. I used this medication as a precaution since he trys to eat everything in the yard (including rabbit pellets/feces). This medication made him extremely hyper the day he took it, and he didn't want to go to sleep that night. The following day he slept allll day. He was nauseous, but didn't vomit. He had soft stools the next day, but I didn't see any worms. .I was given this medication by our vet. I think our puppy may be sensitive to this medication.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product!!! We were skeptical to use this product, basing our views off of the reviews from this page... But we went ahead & bought the product anyway.. We just got 2 beagle puppies & they had worms so bad. They were all over their crate in the mornings & leaking out of their behind. It was disgusting. We tried this product & within 2 hours, most of the worms had exited our puppies bodies (in their stools). It was disgusting. It's been 24 hours & there are no more worms in their stools & we woke up to no worms in the crate, not one! They have had NO side effects. They had loose stool, but not diarrhea. This product is AWESOME & very inexpensive!!!

Seemed to work OK. gave 1.5 tab. at once & 1.5 tab. 2 wks. later. only vomited once more, & stool returned to norml soon after .Expensive product, the vet said it would work & it did .

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It works, but watch out I gave it to my Biewer Yorkshire...almost 7 pnds, the whole pill as requested by my vet. She got super hyper for over 8 hours running back and forth...then she had very soft stools but the worms came out looking like rice. We are almost 24 hours later and now she won't eat her food or drink water or milk, I tried Salmon to get her to eat and drink the water in the can, but she can't keep anything down and won't drink at all.... I hope this will wear off...the vets is closed until Monday.

Can Drontal Plus be given to kittens? If yes, would it be the same dosage by weight?

Asked by: Edilia in Luling
Thank you for your question. "Drontal Plus" cannot be given to kittens however "Drontal" can as long as they are weighing more than 1.5 lbs and over 1 month old. Here is the link below for the correct medication you are looking for: http://www.1800petmeds.com/Drontal-prod10073.html

When should I dose my dog again

Asked by: Jenn
It's recommended (but not necessarily required) that you give a second dose in 3 weeks to ensure all stages of the worms are eliminated. The drug works by paralyzing the worm, causing it to release its hold on the intestine wall. If larvae aren't fully grown at initial dosing, they may be unaffected, thus the need for a second dose.
