What is Drontal Plus?

Drontal Plus is a broad-spectrum dewormer used in dogs to treat tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. Drontal Plus requires a prescription, and is sold per tablet.

For: Dogs (weighing over 2 lbs and 3 weeks of age)

Benefits:
Proven to eliminate the most common intestinal parasites (tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms)
Chewable tablets are easy to give
Given as a single dose
Drontal Plus

How it works:
Drontals active ingredients are praziquantel, pyrantel pamoate and febantel. Praziquantel works by damaging the parasite's skin internally, so the parasite disintegrates and is removed by the pet's immune system. Pyrantel pamoate is active against hookworms and ascarids and acts as a depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent, causing sudden contraction, followed by paralysis. This results in the hookworm losing its grip in the intestinal wall and is removed from the pets system by natural process. Febantel is active against nematode parasites including whipworms.

Cautions:
Side effects of Drontal Plus are rare but may include vomiting, loss of appetite, or diarrhea. Other side effects may also occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any unusual or bothersome side effects that may occur.

What is the most important information I should know about Drontal Plus: Drontal Plus is a prescription medication FDA approved for use in dogs and puppies at least 3 weeks old and weighing at least 2 lbs. Drontal Plus is available as 22.7mg scored chewable tablets for small dogs (2-25 lbs), 68mg scored chewable tablets for medium dogs (26-60 lbs), and 136mg scored chewable tablets for large dogs (45 lbs and over).

What is Drontal Plus: Drontal Plus is a broad spectrum dewormer used in the treatment of tapeworms, hookworms and roundworms and whipworms in dogs.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Drontal Plus to my pet: Tell your veterinarian if your pet has ever had an allergic reaction to the medication. Tapeworm is a zoonotic infection meaning humans can contract tapeworm from animals. Discuss the importance of maintaining good personal hygiene.

How should this medication be given: Give Drontal Plus exactly as directed by the veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Drontal Plus is given as a single dose. The usual dose of small dog tablets (22.7mg) for dogs 2-4 lbs is 1/2 tablet, 5-7 lbs is 1 tablet, 8-12 lbs is 1 1/2 tablets, 13-18 lbs is 2 tablets and 19-25 lbs is 2 1/2 tablets. What happens if I miss giving a dose: Drontal Plus tablets are given as a single dose.

What happens if I overdose the pet: Seek emergency veterinary medical treatment. While rare, symptoms of overdose may include vomiting, loss of appetite or diarrhea.

What should I avoid while giving Drontal Plus to my pet: Do not give Drontal Plus to dogs allergic to it or any of the individual ingredients. Because humans can contract tapeworm from animals, it is important to maintain good personal hygiene. It is also important to eliminate fleas on the pet and in the household and to not feed the pet rodents or uncooked meat or fish. To prevent reinfection, daily cleanup of stools is recommended.

What are the possible side effects of Drontal Plus: Side effects of Drontal Plus are rare but may include vomiting, loss of appetite or diarrhea. Other side effects may also occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to the animal.

not sure I have a 4 1/2 mo Norwich terrier puppy. I used this medication as a precaution since he trys to eat everything in the yard (including rabbit pellets/feces). This medication made him extremely hyper the day he took it, and he didn't want to go to sleep that night. The following day he slept allll day. He was nauseous, but didn't vomit. He had soft stools the next day, but I didn't see any worms. .I was given this medication by our vet. I think our puppy may be sensitive to this medication. 05/12/2012
Great Product!!! We were skeptical to use this product, basing our views off of the reviews from this page... But we went ahead & bought the product anyway.. We just got 2 beagle puppies & they had worms so bad. They were all over their crate in the mornings & leaking out of their behind. It was disgusting. We tried this product & within 2 hours, most of the worms had exited our puppies bodies (in their stools). It was disgusting. It's been 24 hours & there are no more worms in their stools & we woke up to no worms in the crate, not one! They have had NO side effects. They had loose stool, but not diarrhea. This product is AWESOME & very inexpensive!!! 07/21/2011
Great Dane Puppy I gave it to my 12 week old Great Dane. He threw up about six hours after taking it, but was fine other than that. 08/11/2010
Expesive ! but it Woks While vacationing in AZ. in Jan. 2010,my 9 yr old Eng.Setter seemed to be getting little " sick " : runny stool , throwing up after eating. Thought it was the change in ( AZ. ) water . Took her t oVet , after -exam,prescriebed Drontal canine - 136 mg. Seemed to work OK. gave 1.5 tab. at once & 1.5 tab. 2 wks. later. only vomited once more, & stool returned to norml soon after .Expensive product, the vet said it would work & it did . 05/08/2010
It works, but watch out I gave it to my Biewer Yorkshire...almost 7 pnds, the whole pill as requested by my vet. She got super hyper for over 8 hours running back and forth...then she had very soft stools but the worms came out looking like rice. We are almost 24 hours later and now she won't eat her food or drink water or milk, I tried Salmon to get her to eat and drink the water in the can, but she can't keep anything down and won't drink at all.... I hope this will wear off...the vets is closed until Monday. 04/03/2010

Q:
My dog is 17 pounds and the vet told me to give him 22.7 mg dose a few days ago and one 22.7 mg dose in a month... is this normal? I gave him the first dose but am still finding tapeworms on his bed... plus it says that the 22.7 mg treatment is meant for smaller dogs (less than 17 pounds). Is this why I am still finding them?

A:
You are probably still finding them because the fleas are still in the yard. If you do not get rid of the fleas they will keep coming back. Trust me I found this out the hard way. Spray the yard with Admas treatment. It is the only one we found to work in the country.

A:
Drontal begins to work almost right away. Your veterinarian may want to do a follow up test in 2 or 3 weeks to make sure all of the intestinal parasites have been killed. In some cases, another dose may be necessary.

A:
If the dog vomited 4 hours after taking the dose, it should have had time to work. However, you may still need to give a second dose in 2 or 3 weeks. I would suggest you speak to your veterinarian regarding your pet's throwing up.

Answer this Question

Answers

A:
Drontal Plus should not cause itching. You don't describe they type of itch your pet is having. Is the pet itching around the rectal area? That could be due to tapeworms. The itch may be due to an allergy. Best advice is to contact your veterinarian to discuss this.
