    What is Drontal Plus?

Drontal Plus is a broad-spectrum dewormer used in dogs to treat tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. Drontal Plus requires a prescription, and is sold per tablet.

For: Dogs (weighing over 2 lbs and 3 weeks of age)

    Benefits:
Proven to eliminate the most common intestinal parasites (tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms)
Chewable tablets are easy to give
    Given as a single dose
    Drontal Plus

    How it works:
Drontals active ingredients are praziquantel, pyrantel pamoate and febantel. Praziquantel works by damaging the parasite's skin internally, so the parasite disintegrates and is removed by the pet's immune system. Pyrantel pamoate is active against hookworms and ascarids and acts as a depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent, causing sudden contraction, followed by paralysis. This results in the hookworm losing its grip in the intestinal wall and is removed from the pets system by natural process. Febantel is active against nematode parasites including whipworms.

    Cautions:
Side effects of Drontal Plus are rare but may include vomiting, loss of appetite, or diarrhea. Other side effects may also occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any unusual or bothersome side effects that may occur.

What is the most important information I should know about Drontal Plus: Drontal Plus is a prescription medication FDA approved for use in dogs and puppies at least 3 weeks old and weighing at least 2 lbs. Drontal Plus is available as 22.7mg scored chewable tablets for small dogs (2-25 lbs), 68mg scored chewable tablets for medium dogs (26-60 lbs), and 136mg scored chewable tablets for large dogs (45 lbs and over).

What is Drontal Plus: Drontal Plus is a broad spectrum dewormer used in the treatment of tapeworms, hookworms and roundworms and whipworms in dogs.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Drontal Plus to my pet: Tell your veterinarian if your pet has ever had an allergic reaction to the medication. Tapeworm is a zoonotic infection meaning humans can contract tapeworm from animals. Discuss the importance of maintaining good personal hygiene.

How should this medication be given: Give Drontal Plus exactly as directed by the veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Drontal Plus is given as a single dose. The usual dose of small dog tablets (22.7mg) for dogs 2-4 lbs is 1/2 tablet, 5-7 lbs is 1 tablet, 8-12 lbs is 1 1/2 tablets, 13-18 lbs is 2 tablets and 19-25 lbs is 2 1/2 tablets. The usual dose of medium tablets (68mg) for dogs 26-30 lbs is 1 tablet, 31-44 lbs is 1 1/2 tablets, 45-60 lbs is 2 tablets. The usual dose of large tablets (136mg) for dogs 45-60 lbs is 1 tablet, 61-90 lbs is 1 1/2 tablets and 91-120 lbs is 2 tablets. Tablets may be mixed with food. Fasting is neither necessary nor recommended. Store Drontal Plus at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep out of the reach of children and pets.

What happens if I miss giving a dose: Drontal Plus tablets are given as a single dose.

What happens if I overdose the pet: Seek emergency veterinary medical treatment. While rare, symptoms of overdose may include vomiting, loss of appetite or diarrhea.

What should I avoid while giving Drontal Plus to my pet: Do not give Drontal Plus to dogs allergic to it or any of the individual ingredients. Because humans can contract tapeworm from animals, it is important to maintain good personal hygiene. It is also important to eliminate fleas on the pet and in the household and to not feed the pet rodents or uncooked meat or fish. To prevent reinfection, daily cleanup of stools is recommended.

What are the possible side effects of Drontal Plus: Side effects of Drontal Plus are rare but may include vomiting, loss of appetite or diarrhea. Other side effects may also occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to the animal.

What other drugs will affect Drontal Plus: Do not give Drontal Plus to your pet if already giving an alternate dewormer medication unless directed to by your veterinarian.

Where can I get more information: Your pharmacist has additional information about Drontal Plus written for health professionals that you may read.

Works When I got my first puppy she had tapeworms wiggling in her feces. Vet prescribed Drontal Plus and the worms cleared immediately! Now I have a second puppy 1 year later and he had tapeworms AND roundworms and once again we were prescribed Drontal Plus. It's a great product but make sure to clean your animals living area with bleach to kill eggs and larvae so they don't get reinfected after the medication wears off and to do a followup to get any newly hatched worms. 07/16/2014
corgi mix i had the dog for his annual shots and this is the 2nd year the the vet gave this to our dog. our dog does not have worms. the vet said this is for a preventative. does anyone know if this is true. 03/11/2013
not sure I have a 4 1/2 mo Norwich terrier puppy. I used this medication as a precaution since he trys to eat everything in the yard (including rabbit pellets/feces). This medication made him extremely hyper the day he took it, and he didn't want to go to sleep that night. The following day he slept allll day. He was nauseous, but didn't vomit. He had soft stools the next day, but I didn't see any worms. .I was given this medication by our vet. I think our puppy may be sensitive to this medication. 05/12/2012
Great Product!!! We were skeptical to use this product, basing our views off of the reviews from this page... But we went ahead & bought the product anyway.. We just got 2 beagle puppies & they had worms so bad. They were all over their crate in the mornings & leaking out of their behind. It was disgusting. We tried this product & within 2 hours, most of the worms had exited our puppies bodies (in their stools). It was disgusting. It's been 24 hours & there are no more worms in their stools & we woke up to no worms in the crate, not one! They have had NO side effects. They had loose stool, but not diarrhea. This product is AWESOME & very inexpensive!!! 07/21/2011
Great Dane Puppy I gave it to my 12 week old Great Dane. He threw up about six hours after taking it, but was fine other than that. 08/11/2010

Please contact your veterinarian as your pet will need to still receive the second dose when it is due to ensure all of the eggs are killed based on the reproduction cycle of the parasites.

We adopted a puppy yesterday, and his paperwork says we was treated two days ago with Drontal. I just noticed what appears to be worms in his stool, and they appear to be moving/alive. Is this an indication of the drug working or an indication that he was not actually administered the drug?

    Answer:
After giving Drontal, it is still possible to see live worms coming out in the stool. Tape worm fragments can take up to 10 days to come out. You can ask your veterinarian about redosing in a few weeks. A second dose is often needed to make sure all phases of the life cycles are treated and completely deworm the pet.

    Answer:
No, however please check that there are enough tablets remaining on your pet's prescription in case your vet has instructed a redose of 2 and 1/2 tablets of the Drontal Plus 22.7mg in the next few weeks.
