Our 12 yr. old, diabetic Shepard/Chow Mix had been using Frontline for many years. Suddenly in May the Frontline stopped working. We called our Vet to ask what to do. He said this happens and to use another OTC flea/tick preventative that has at least 45% Permethrin but not to use Hartz products. We looked to see what was available & found Proticall having the most active ingredient at 65%. We have been using Proticall ever since & find it to work great. The only drawback is that it is used by weight so a large dog must use multiple tubes per month. It is also detrimental to cats so must be used carefully. We will continue to use Proticall for this old boy. Good stuff!
I got Proticall for my little beagle Levi. He is still absolutely miserable. I gave him the first dose and just thought it needed more time so when the second dose was due I thought we were finally going to get some relief, wrong! He's starting to lose the hair on his belly and bottom from the scratching and itching. Going to switch to something else, hope it works.
We have had many dogs over the past 35 years, and Proticall (once we found it) was the only product that worked while not creating massive derm problems. Once called "Defend", it takes some getting used to. The first dose seems to have scant effect, but then it works like a dog would like. We have no ticks to speak of, so it it primarily fleas and the occasional mosquito. Breeds: Scottish deerhounds, English Setter, Greyhound, English Mastiffs
bought it because of the price - my dog needs mosquito protection on top of flea and tick. but she scratches more now - two weeks after putting it on - than she did without any protection. hope it works better for you - i won't buy it again.
She is a Chinese crested powder puff if that makes ant differance.

Call the number on the box. They will connect you with a research scientist who will answer the question (at least they answered our specific questions).
Rebecca, great question. If your dog has a history of seizures, or any other major illness or disorder, you should contact your vet before giving your dog any new medications, or changing any medications. He will know your pet's personal history, and give you the best guidance.
DEPENDS ON WHAT PRODUCT YOU USE, I USE PROTICALL AND WITHIN AN HOUR THE FLEAS ARE GONE. EVERY PRODUCT HAS A DIFFERENT TIME FRAME. BUT REMEMBER FLEAS DO NOT LIVE ON DOGS THEY FEED ON THEM SO IF YOU DO NOT GET RID OF THE FLEAS IN YOUR HOME AND IN YOUR YARD YOU ARE STILL GOING TO SEE THEM.
Proticall for dogs kills and repels mites, lice, mosquitoes, fleas, Deer ticks (Ixodes scapularis), Brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus), American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis) and Lone Star tick (Amblyomma americanum). You should see full coverage within 24 hours, or 6 hours for dogs weighing less than 33 pounds.

If the cat comes in contact with the product on your dogs it can cause an adverse reaction, especially if the product is ingested. I've read the product can cause seizures in cats and can be fatal.
The ingredient in Proticall can cause serious harm to a cat that may lick the newly applied product on a dog. Keep the cat separated from the dogs for 24 hours to let the Proticall dry fully, then it should be safe to let the cat and dogs socialize.
