What is the most important information I should know about Legend: Tell the
veterinarian if there is an allergy to birds or bird products, feathers or egg products.
What is Legend: Legend is similar to synovial fluid, a substance
that occurs naturally in the joints. Legend is available by prescription as 40mg/4 ml vials for
I.V. use and 20mg/2 ml vials for intra-articular use. Legend is used in horses for the
treatment of inflammation of the carpus or fetlock associated with equine osteoarthritis.
Legend may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this guide.
What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Legend to
my horse: Do not use Legend if there is an infection or skin disease at the site of the
injection. Tell the veterinarian if the animal is pregnant or lactating.
How should this medication be given: Give this medication
exactly as directed by your veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions ask the
pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. The usual dose of Legend in horses is 4 ml
(40mg) I.V. or 2 ml (20mg) intra-articular. Treatment may be repeated at weekly intervals for a
total of three treatments. Store Legend at room temperature. Keep this medication out of the
reach of children and pets.
What happens if I miss giving a dose: Contact the veterinarian
if a dose of Legend is missed.
What happens if I overdose the horse: An overdose of Legend is
unlikely to be life threatening. Contact your veterinarian or a veterinary emergency room if an
overdose is suspected.
What should I avoid while giving Legend to my horse: It is
important to rule out serious fracture in cases of acute lameness. Horses should be given stall
rest before gradually resuming normal activity.
What are the possible side effects of Legend: If any of the
following serious side effects occur, stop giving Legend and seek emergency veterinary medical
attention; an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; swelling of the lips, tongue or face;
hives). Other less serious side effects may occur. Continue giving Legend and talk to your
veterinarian if your horse experiences temporary pain or swelling of the affected joint or rash
or bruising at the injection site. Other side effects may also occur. Talk to your veterinarian
about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to the animal.
What other drugs will affect Legend: It is not known whether
other medicines will interact with Legend. Talk with your veterinarian or pharmacist before
giving any prescription or over the counter medicines, including herbal products during
treatment with Legend.
Where can I get more information: Your pharmacist has additional
information about Legend written for health professionals that you may read.
