What is Cosequin for Dogs?

Cosequin for Dogs is a nutritional supplement that helps dogs maintain healthy joints. It has been rated the number one veterinarian-recommended joint health supplement brand. Cosequin's active ingredients include glucosamine and chondroitin, and it can have a positive impact on joint health, while avoiding the side effects that can sometimes accompany prescription drugs. It is available in regular strength capsules and regular strength and double strength capsules and chewable tablets.

For:

Dogs

Benefits:
  • Supports & maintains joint and connective tissue health
  • Helps support cartilage matrix production & protects existing cartilage from breakdown
  • The double strength formula contains 500 mg of glucosamine and 400 mg of chondroitin
  • Comes highly recommended by veterinarians
  • No reported side effects
How it Works:

Cosequin for Dogs contains glucosamine, which is a natural compound that is found in healthy cartilage in both humans and pets. It helps hydrate healthy joints by increasing the production of molecules that bind and hold water in the cartilage. Healthy cartilage provides cushioning which helps protect a pet's joints while exercising. Many believe that it provides clinical benefit in the synovial fluid by strengthening cartilage and aiding glycosaminoglycan synthesis. Further research on the effectiveness of glucosamine is still needed, but many of our customers find it to be very beneficial to their pets. The glucosamine is used in conjunction with sodium chondroitin sulfate, an important structural component of cartilage that provides much of its resistance to compression.

Cautions:

Side effects are rare, but may include diarrhea.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My dog is doing much better with this! My dog has arthritis and since she started using the Cosequin she is doing much better. She was having trouble with standing up from laying down on our hardwood floors, climbing up onto our couches and beds, and having trouble walking. Now since using this product she can do all that and then some!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from DON'T HESITATE TO BUY I have been very happy with this product. I have a dachshund and she is almost 14 years old. I have given Consequin to her daily for years. She seems to be getting around just fine. If you watched her walking you would never know that she was as old as she is. When we get older we get aches and pains so I am sure dogs do too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Product is excellent This is our second year using cosequin daily for our 7-year old miniature schnauzer. The stiffness in his joint that he experienced, especially early morning, has been completely alleviated. He takes the half-tablet willingly and with relish! Excellent remedy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cosequin We are so very pleased with the results on Cindy with the Cosequin. We are now giving it also to our Schaunzer, Rascal. Cindy was getting pretty bad with her hip and also got to she couldn't even climb stairs or jump up on the couch. She is not going thru the doggie door and going up and down the stairs. She still is on her way to recovery with the jumping on the couch. She still cant do that but in time, I feel she will. Thanks so much. Love It !!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product This has help out my Scottish Terrier, I don't know what would have happened without it. She developed a bad hip and knee. She would frequently only walk on three legs and welp in pain when I try to touch her hip. The vet recommended some other pills which didn't do anything and I couldn't keep her on pain medication. Surgery was not a great option as it wouldn't have a high success rate due to recovery. It was very depressing. I ordered these pills and they helped only a little at first but not enough. Finally I gave her a pill a day at once instead of splitting in half(which is recommended according to weight), so she still gets one a day. This has help and she hasn't limped in months. I am ecstatic!! I will eventually go down to half a day, to follow directions but I can't believe something has finally worked. My baby is back going up stairs and being her playful self!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great maintenance medication! A couple years ago we took Chester, then about 10 yrs., to the vet because of his back hips and the vet gave us Cosequin. In no time he was getting around and up and down the stairs again with no problem. We have kept him on the Cosequin since then and now at 14 yrs. he is still on it along with some heavier meds and I still think the Cosequin helps a lot. He loves getting it, he thinks it is a treat (of course he does, he is a Lab!). And I am also very glad to have found this product on PetMeds!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from YOU will love YOU I have a 6 lb. Chihuahua. She is 14 years old. We had been giving her pain meds to relieve her arthritis/joint pain....but gave it only when she was really bad because of the damage pain meds can do to the internal organs. It hurt me to watch her and know she was hurting. We are traveling in a motorhome...with 6 steps in & out. She was always carried up & down. I saw the Cosequin for Dogs TV commercial, and thought I would give it a try. Had it sent to my sons home so that it was there when we arrived. On the fourth day after she started the Cosequin she was RUNNING up and down those steps....and chasing cows around like she did 10 years ago! I cried a lot just watching her.....and I pray she keeps feeling like a pup.

How likely is my 13 pound peeke-poo going to eat the Cosequin chewable tablet?

She had lyme disease in the past and sometimes has stiffness and limps.

They are like roast beef flavor so its like a treat to them. If you have that extremely picky Furry Child you can always put it in Peanut Butter.

Some bottles say "DS". What does that mean?

Asked by: Lar
The Cosequin sprinkle capsules contain 250mg of Glucosamine and 200mg of Chondroitin, the Cosequin DS sprinkle capsules contain 500mg of Glucosamine and 400mg of Chondroitin. So the "DS"indicates that the product is " double strength" Thanks for your question.

How long before seeing results?

I think I saw in a thread that this medication has to be given for 30 days before any improvement. I know it may vary from dog to dog, but how soon does this work? I have a 7 year old Chihuahua and she is almost bedridden due to her hips and knees. her Vet put her on this medication but I just wanted to see if anyone else had any advice? my baby is really skinny and boney, but eats well.
Asked by: Anonymous
It worked within 3 weeks at the full dose recommended. I hope you see a vet first to rule out other diseases, good luck.
