What is Cosequin for Dogs?

Cosequin for Dogs is a nutritional supplement that helps dogs maintain healthy joints. It has been rated the number one veterinarian-recommended joint health supplement brand. Cosequin's active ingredients include glucosamine and chondroitin, and it can have a positive impact on joint health, while avoiding the side effects that can sometimes accompany prescription drugs. It is available in regular strength capsules and regular strength and double strength capsules and chewable tablets.

For: Dogs
Cosequin for Dogs

Benefits:
The double strength formula contains 500 mg of glucosamine and 400 mg of chondroitin
Comes highly recommended by veterinarians
No reported side effects

How it works:
Cosequin for Dogs contains glucosamine, which is a natural compound that is found in healthy cartilage in both humans and pets. It helps hydrate healthy joints by increasing the production of molecules that bind and hold water in the cartilage. Healthy cartilage provides cushioning which helps protect a pet's joints while exercising. Many believe that it provides clinical benefit in the synovial fluid by strengthening cartilage and aiding glycosaminoglycan synthesis. Further research on the effectiveness of glucosamine is still needed, but many of our customers find it to be very beneficial to their pets. The glucosamine is used in conjunction with sodium chondroitin sulfate, an important structural component of cartilage that provides much of its resistance to compression.

Cautions:
Side effects are rare, but may include diarrhea.

Was headed for surgery We were referred to a highly regarded orthopedic vet for our long-haired dachshund who exhibited weakness and pain in a back hip. Radiological studies indicated malformation of the joint, possibly from injury but also possibly from perthes(?). Options included removal of the femur head and total joint replacement. He suggested we start her on Cosequin right away, in any case. I couldn't imagine the cage-rest aftermath of those surgeries, but in a matter of months she was running and playing with abandon. Will the problem recur? I don't know, but I'm SO glad we didn't choose surgery. At this point, it appears to have been unnecessary. 04/27/2011
Update on Dippy Dippy is back to his old self and is now jumping back up on the couch. He's laying in his spot right now. He went for a long walk today, and it's as if nothing ever happened. This is an amazing product that's incredibly effective. I'm telling everyone about it. It's incredible how many people already know, and have been giving it to their dogs and cats. 06/16/2013
Amazing My dog Dippy will be 11 this year. He's been with me as a puppy. Recently his hind legs went completely useless. He was limping badly off his left hind leg and it became totally unable to support him. His right hind leg wasn't strong enough to carry him. He had to drag himself by his front paws to move anywhere. It was torture watching him lay there shaking. I was afraid that his time was up and he wouldn't last the week. I was told about Cosequin and that Jack Hanna recommended it highly. I read the reviews and they were all positive, so I thought I'd try it. I'm a skeptic by nature and the bottle said it would take 4 to 6 weeks for it to take effect. I didn't think he could last that long. I picked up a bottle ( it was the last one they had on the shelf) I brought it home and we started him on the chewable pills on a Monday night,. He took it fine. It was like a treat. By Thursday night he was able to walk through the house, and down the front porch steps to do his business outside. Today; Friday, he is walking normally and ready to jump back up on the couch. I still can't accept the speed at which this worked. This dog was on the verge of being put down, and now he's back to his normal self in less than a week. We need to have him looked at by the Vet to see what might have happened to him. It could be he dislocated his hip or something, but the only thing that changed was that we used the Cosequin, and now he's back to his normal self. I don't know what else I can attribute this amazing recovery. The Cosequin is all we gave him and he's moving around like normal and ready to jump up on the couch. His limp is gone and he's in no pain. I can't recommend this product high enough. If there were more than 5 stars I'd give it and it still wouldn't be high enough. If your dog is showing signs of arthritis or hip dysplasia get this product. It's better than advertised. 06/14/2013
cosaquin DS This product is wonderful. I have 13 yr. old Doxie who was hardly walking. After about ten days on a half of tablet he is 100% improved. I am so happy to see him moving around easily. He is not running races but he is so much more mobile. I would recommend any to try it. Give it a chance even if your vet doesn't recommend it. 04/16/2013
FABULOUS I have been feeding my dogs other products. I changed 1 dog to Cosequin DS & left the other dog (full brothers same litter) on the same thing they have been getting for years. You could see the difference in about 30 days. I would recommend this to ANY DOG owner 04/01/2013

Thank you for your question Maddie. When adding any type of joint supplement to your furry pal's medication regimen, it is best to consult with your veterinarian to avoid any possible drug interactions.

My puppy is 6 months old and has been diagnosed with moderate OCD. She limps slightly, but is not in pain. I want to try to avoid surgery. The vet said the OCD could go away on its own with strict rest for several weeks. Is she too young for Cosequin? Would this help her?

Answer:
it may in fact be a helpful supplement for your pet......however, because the pup is so young
you should check with the vet. The vet did say strict rest was their recommendation......so if the
cosequin did mask some pain that did manifest.......the pup may become " overactive " and not get
the healing resting the vet is recommending. Its worth asking your vet about.

My dog has a ton of food allergies and her allergy vet wants her to take a non flavored or vegetable flavored Cosequin. Is there one? If so what is it called?

Hi there, You definitely want to speak to your vet before using the following item however this is a capsule so it does not contain a flavor (but the tablets are roast beef flavor). All Cosequin contains Glucosamine Hydrochloride (which is derived from shellfish) Here is the capsule link:
