About this product

What is Profender Cat Dewormer?

Profender Cat Dewormer is the first-ever, topical dewormer used to treat and control intestinal parasites in cats, such as hookworms, tapeworms and roundworms. Not only is Profender Cat Dewormer easy to use, safe and effective, it also works in a single-dose capacity so there is no need for that pesky second dose! Profender Cat Dewormer contains a combination of insecticides (emodepside and praziquantel) and requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

For:

Cats (8+ weeks of age, weighing 2.2+ lbs)

Benefits:

  • Kills hookworms, tapeworms and roundworms
  • Fast-acting, powerful topical treatment
  • One-time application in a single dose
  • Safe and effective

How does Profender Cat Dewormer work?

Profender Cat Dewormer works by using the time-tested active ingredient praziquantel and a unique compound called emodepside to eradicate intestinal parasites. Once Profender Cat Dewormer encounters your cat's skin, it rapidly enters the bloodstream and travels to the intestines, controlling and eliminating unwanted parasites.

Cautions:

Not for use on kittens under 8 weeks old or those under 2.2 lbs. and safe use in breeding, pregnant, or lactating pets has not been determined. Use with caution in sick or debilitated cats. Keep out of reach of children, and to prevent accidental ingestion of the product, children should not come in contact with the application site for 24 hours while the product is being absorbed. Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should avoid direct contact with, or wear disposable gloves when applying this product.

Brand Name:

Profender Cat Dewormer (Bayer)

Generic Name:

emodepside + praziquantel

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before applying Profender Cat Dewormer?

Tell your veterinarian if your pet is breeding, pregnant or lactating since safe use of this product has not been determined in such pets. Do not use in animals allergic to Profender Cat Dewormer or to either of the individual ingredients emodepside or praziquantel (Droncit, Tape Worm Tabs).

How should Profender Cat Dewormer be used?

Profender Cat Dewormer is applied topically to the skin. It is not given by mouth. Do not apply to broken skin or if the hair coat is wet. Follow the manufacturer's directions for application. A single treatment is effective and a second treatment should not be necessary. If re-infection occurs, the product can be re-applied after 30 days. If you do not understand the directions, or if you have difficulty applying the medication, contact your pharmacist or veterinarian.

What are the potential side effects of Profender Cat Dewormer?

Side effects that may occur include licking/excessive grooming, scratching at treatment site, salivation, lethargy, alopecia (loss of hair), agitation/nervousness, vomiting, diarrhea, eye irritation, respiratory irritation, and shaking/tremors. Other side effects may also occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to your pet.

What happens if I miss giving a dose of Profender Cat Dewormer?

A single treatment is effective and a second treatment should not be necessary. If re-infection occurs, the product can be re-applied after 30 days following the initial dose.

What happens if I overdose my pet on Profender Cat Dewormer?

Seek emergency veterinary medical treatment. Symptoms of overdose may include increased salivation, tremors, or drowsiness.

What should I avoid when applying Profender Cat Dewormer?

Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian. If you do not understand these instructions ask your veterinarian or pharmacist to explain them to you. Do not use in cats under 8 weeks of age or less than 2.2 lbs. Do not use on cats that are sick, debilitated, or underweight. Do not allow any animal to lick the application site for 24 hours. Separation of treated animals may be necessary. Children should not come in contact with the application site for 24 hours after application. Pregnant women, or women who may become pregnant, should avoid direct contact with, or wear disposable gloves when applying, this product. Studies performed in rats and rabbits suggest that emodepside may interfere with fetal development in those species. In humans, Profender Cat Dewormer can cause skin or eye irritation and may be harmful if swallowed. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling. In case of accidental ingestion or if skin or eye irritation occurs, call a poison control center or physician for treatment advice.

Cat doing great but…
Ok so tried it on a male 2 yr stray that got brought in and the vet recommended this; used it and he started to lick the stuff and ran around erratically and was foaming at the mouth. Horrified, as he was staggering like a drunk, and thought he would never want anything to do with us again if he makes it we kept it on. He did make it and the next day he was fine but if there’s such a thing as a kitty neck pillow that prevents from licking whilst the Profender is drying, that would be great. Profender should partner up with a company that makes them, and we should all get a free one from the vet upon purchasing a Profender purr-scription!

Caused permanent colon damage
My old vet applied this as her yearly money grab visit, without doing a fecal check on an indoor cat who has never had worms since kitty hood. Within an hour he raced through house, wild, all over, pooing all over house. Fecal matter all over. Since, he had peristalsis of his intestines affected. Nerves damaged. So now, has to have Lactulose RX to move things along. Vets refuse it seems, to acknowledge this drug is harmful. Very harmful. I allowed this application against my better judgement and other vets do not just apply a wormer without a fecal check! My cat had no worms, it was a total in cahoots with Bayer. Indy grab IMHO. STAY AWAY from this wormer! There are other safer alternatives….

4 month old kitten very sick after Profender
Loving, lap Kitten that is very affectionate and healthy went downhill after giving this within 24-48 hours. Tremors, gait unsteady, lethargic, hiding, not wanting any petting, not eating or drinking. Emergency vet visit $185 showed fever of 104 and vet certainly didn't even mention it could be from the Profender. It is for sure! She is very sick and I hope she doesn't die. I'd never use this poison again.

Never again!
This product may be effective but I had 2 problems. 1: With 3 cats keeping them from licking it off each other was a nightmare and I am not about to keep them in separate rooms and move litter boxes in there! 2: Worse than that, on the second application a month later, one of my cats was staggering around losing his balance like a drunk and was having jolts run through his body even when laying down. I read some reviews that scared me and washed it off of him before it could do any more potential harm to him. I don’t know if there was extra product in that package and it was marked wrong because it did seem to keep coming out of the package for much longer than the others and made a larger pool on his neck.

Burned the hair off
This junk burned the hair off of my male short hair about a year old. Had the same experience with Petarmor flea and tick prevention in another male short hair. Seems they could do a whole lot better than to produce a product that causes these problems. Poor TK will go all summer with no hair on his back.

Great product when used correctly
The product really is great for getting rid of worms. I usually don’t write reviews but when looking at the reviews and seeing so many bad ones I thought I should clear up that when your cat is given this medicine PUT A CONE ON it prevents your cat from licking the medicine. Which licking it will make them foam at the mouth and freak them out like the other reviews suggest. Despite licking it they will be fine but if you don’t want to see your cat keep licking it just put a cone on. If your not going to put a cone on don't write a bad review when your cat licks it and freaks out

Never again
I used this on my 8yr old short hair male cat and I will never use it again. Immediately started coughing and salivating. I was really worried. He has been lethargic and not himself ever since. I will go back to a pill if necessary. Not happy with vet.
Thumbs up Would not recommend this product
