  • Easy to administer

How does Ivermectin/Pyrantel work?

Ivermectin/Pyrantel is an anthelmintic (dewormer). The ingredient pyrantel pamoate is used to treat and control roundworms and hookworms in dogs.

Studies have indicated that certain dogs of the herding breeds are more sensitive to the effects of ivermectin administered at elevated dose levels due to the MDR1 gene. Dog breeds that may be affected include Australian Shepherd, Australian Shepherd Mini, Border Collie, Collie and English Shepherd.

Can cause sensitivities in herding dog breeds. The safe use of this drug has not been evaluated in pregnant or lactating bitches. Store Ivermectin/Pyrantel at room temperature. Do not remove the tablet from its wrapper until ready to give to your pet. Keep this medication away from children and pets.

What is the most important thing I should know about Ivermectin/Pyrantel?

Ivermectin/Pyrantel is a prescription medication available as flavored chewable tablets. The usual dose of Ivermectin/Pyrantel in dogs up to 25 lbs is 68 mcg/57 mg (Blue box), for dogs 26-50 lbs is 136 mcg/114 mg (Green box) and for dogs 51-100 lbs is 272 mcg/227 mg (Brown box). Dogs over 100 lbs are given a combination of tablets.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Ivermectin/Pyrantel to my pet?

Tell your veterinarian if your pet has ever had an allergic reaction to the medication.

How should Ivermectin/Pyrantel be given?

Give Ivermectin/Pyrantel exactly as directed by your veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions ask your pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Use with caution, Collies and other herding dog breeds have been known to have adverse reactions to ivermectin administered at elevated dose levels. Heartworm testing should be performed prior to the start of prevention therapy. If your pet is off Ivermectin/Pyrantel for 6 months or less, start the medication and test after 6 months since microfilaria, that take 6 months to mature, will result in a positive test result.

What are the potential side effects of Ivermectin/Pyrantel?

Side effects of Ivermectin/Pyrantel are rare at the recommended heartworm prevention dose, but may include lethargy, limpness, salivation, shaking, diarrhea, decreased appetite, licking lips, and belching. Higher doses in dogs may cause tremors, dilated pupils, loss of body weight, or death.

What happens if I miss giving a dose of Ivermectin/Pyrantel?

Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. Do not give a double dose of the medication.

What happens if I overdose my pet on Ivermectin/Pyrantel?

If you suspect that your pet has received an overdose of Ivermectin/Pyrantel, consult your veterinarian or emergency veterinary clinic immediately.

What should I avoid while giving Ivermectin/Pyrantel to my pet?

Because humans can contract hookworms from animals, it is important to maintain good personal hygiene. It is also important to eliminate fleas on your pet and in the household and to not feed your pet rodents. To prevent reinfection, daily cleanup of stools is recommended.

What other drugs will affect Ivermectin/Pyrantel?

Do not give Ivermectin/Pyrantel if your pet is already being given another heartworm medication.

We have to mix it with her dog treats but the money we save is very good and so far her heartworm tests have been negative over the last couple years so evidently it must be working. we're full of mosquitoes around here.

Is generic heart worm medication just as strong as Heartgard?

Asked by: Shirley
Thank you for your question. The Heartgard Plus and the Generic Tri-Heart Plus share the same active ingredient. However Heartgard Plus is a beef flavored soft chewable, where as Tri Heart Plus is a pork flavored chewable tablet.

My dog weighs right about 50lbs. Which dosage would be appropriate? She is a new rescue around age 2, so she may put on a couple healthy pounds but not change much otherwise over time.

Asked by: KaseyJo
Thank you for your question. For a 50lbs dog the appropriate dose is 26-50, unless otherwise prescribed by a veterinarian. As this is a prescription medication the dose would be prescribed by the vet based on your pets exact weight on file .

I know it is not recommended that the dog swallows the pill whole but is it ok if he does from an effectiveness standpoint.

Asked by: Buckie
Efficacy is directly related to the amount of medication absorbed and the main concern with it being swallowed whole is that in some animals the tablet has passed through their digestive system's and then found whole in the pet's stool. In cases like this none of the medication was absorbed and will not be efficacious. The tablet may be broken up into smaller pieces prior to giving it to your pet but please make sure all of the pieces are being given at the same time to ensure better absorption.

Asked by: Butler
Thank you for your question. The best option to find out the inactive ingredients and flavoring would be to contact the manufacturer.

Can this be used to treat heartworms like heartgard can?

Asked by: Kimberly 92
The active ingredients are identical but neither is an approved heartworm treatment. Both are heartworm preventatives and in heartworm positive dogs will prevent further infection with new worms but will NOT kill the adult worms already present in the heart. The adult worms will live out their normal lifespan and then die and as long as there are no new worms to replace them, the dog will eventually be free of heartworms.
