\n STOKER is 94 lbs and has had Addisons since April 2004. He has always been on Percorten and done wonderfully on it. He gets a full vial (25 mg 4 ml) every 30 days. He also gets 2 mg of pred a day 1 with morning meal and one with evening meal. His life is normal now but we really almost lost him and it took two weeks of our heart breaking worry till we finally got the answer, he had Addisons. As my vet says "he can live a long and happy life" with the help of this drug, and that is exactly what we want for him. As we all do we love our pets as one of the family. I would recommend this drug highly, I have never used the other but why fix something that is not broken, PETMEDS has been a wonderful partner w/Stoker's problem, it took a while to find them, but I will never leave. They are extremely helpful and considerate. They are wonderful people and every time I order they make me feel wonderful with their personal attention,\n

\n I have been administrating the injection for the past four years to my dog. She is a large breed about 90 lbs. She has tolarated the med very well. I give it to her ev. 25 days and pren 5 mg ev other day. She was diagnosed with bone cancer 6 months ago and the addison has been under control no effects from the cancer. She is my million dollar "Duchess".\n

\n I used the oral med Fludrocortisone for a time and it did not work half as well as Percortin. She was never "well". The first review was very good.\nMy only comment is that depending on your dog you may not need to give pred every day. Discuss this with your vet. The least pred you can give is important because of the side effects which there are many but includes increased water consumption and thus urine output. Tollers are prone to Addisions and Rio gets 1.3cc of Percortin every month and a 5mg pred every third day. I found 1cc not enough. Each dog is an individual because of the variability of the damage to the adrenal gland. Regular blood work is important. I am not a vet. I have been involved in dogs for 40 years and went to UC Davis as an undergrad.\n

\n Percorten-Helpful info on Addison's\n
\n \n\n \n
\n Living with a dog with Addison's disease can be initially scary, but does not have to be a challenge or difficult. Percorten and Prenisone has saved her life after the first serious symptoms developed and diagnosis confirmed. Once your dog is stabilized on these two medications, (there may be others) your dog can live a long normal life with some help from you. If you feel uncomfortable giving the monthly injections yourselve, your Vet or technician will do it for you, but it's very easy to learn, so ask your Vet to show you how. It will save you time, money and give yourself a sense of pride and honor with the treatment you provide for your beloved dog and maintaining the quality of it's life. A gerneral rule is to give 1mg for every lbs your dog weighs. If your dog weighs 50 lbs, thats 50 mgs. You have the 25 mg/ml vial, thats 50lbs divided by 25mg = 2 ml injection from the vial. Its very important to shake the vial vigerously immediately before drawing back the solution into the syringe because the medication settles rapidly. Make sure you have an appropiate size needle for the size of your dog and give the injection into an alternating site each month(every 25 to 30 days), like the rear upper hind leg. It needs to go deep into the largest muscle possible. If, in time, it's weigh increases or decreases and symptoms develop again, an increase or decrease of Percorten may be needed. Don't forget to clean thoroughly with alcohol, the site before giving the injection. Do not use the same needle more than twice, if that, and clean needle and syringe with alcohol. Prednisone is mostly prescribed in addition to Percorten to be given by mouth on a daily basis and is also very essential. If your dog suddenly becomes lethargic and sick, give it a dose of prednisone and take it to the ER Vet. ASAP. If your dog becomes anxious/hyper and drinks alot of water, you may need to reduce the amount of daily prednisone. Typical doses range from 2.5 to 7.5 mg/day depending on your dog and its size. My views are strickly based on personal experience due to my dog having Addison's disease. I am a medical prof, but not a Vet. I hope this helps people coping with this unfortunate issue. FYI...there are a few breeds prone to Addison's disease.. Portuguese water dogs is one. It's important to know how to recognize the symptoms of Addison's...ask you vet.\n
