\n This product does exactly what it is supposed to do...\nIt alters/lowers the Ph of urine.\nIt is a good idea to have it on hand, however use it with Caution.\nSince the volume of urine in the renal system is an unknown factor, you can lower the Ph too much and cause other problems.\nI would always consult my Vet before altering my Cat's body chemistry in such a fundamental way.\nSince I have some diagnostic instruments, I can give my Vet accurate info over the phone and get an informed opinion that it is or is not safe to use.\n

\n About a year ago, in a snow storm, I came home and noticed my cat having problems going to the bathroom. She is my baby and as her parent, I was scared to death! I loaded her in the car and drove 45mins to the ER Veterinary Clinic. She has a blockage in her urethra because she was eating too many hard foods. They gave her some shots and this gel. IT WORKS WONDERS! Every once in a while, I give her a little to keep her regular. I have also implemented more soft food in diet, whether she likes it or not! LOL\nI am grateful that I was informed about this product. They are our little babies and can't speak for themselves. It is crucial to monitor your pet and address any unusual behavior. She doesn't like the taste, but it keeps her "going potty" LOL\n\nAnd thanx PetMeds! She liked the added 'gift' of catnip!!!!\n

\n The intention of this product in lowering urine ph, as well as treating or peventing urinary tract infection has been a mixed bag of success in my experience and opinion. For many years, long time veterinary practitioners routinely used urinary tract acidifiers, such as methigel, especially in cats, to hopefully allow the pet to produce a urine where any crystals formed would dissolve, thus theoretically preventing mucous plug formation and/or urinary tract stones and blockages. A lower urinary ph would also potentially make secondary infection of the bladder lining much less likely. And while the latter is true in many cases, the problem with lowering the urine ph by artificially manipulating the diet of pets or through supplements like this, is that many times the urine ph is lowered too much, sometimes leading to increased development of other types of urinary tract stones called calcium oxylate stones, which have been seen in increasing numbers in recent years. Some veterinarians trace the increase in these more difficult to treat calcium oxylate stones to the use of additives to the foods of dogs and cats to lower urine ph, as well as the overzealous use of urinary tract acidifying agents like this. And while this product does serve a purpose in helping particularly those pets prone to the still more common struvite crystals and stones, which can develop at high urine ph, the use of this product must be monitored closely through periodic urine checks at your vet, in order to make sure that other types of crystals like calcium oxylate crystals are not developing. The other problem I have had with products like this is occasional GI upset if given on an empty stomach, as well as sometimes complicating those pets with certain metabolic problems of their kidneys and particularly certain liver disorders. An animal guardian should therefore always check with their veterinarian, even before starting an over the counter product like this. With the above limitations, I therefore give this product an overall rating of 3, efficacy a 3, and ease of use/taste a 4.\n
