\n 2 cats reacted to Tresaderm, high ALT, hospital\n

\n Two of my cats reacted to Tresaderm. I reported it to the drug company, one of me vets encouraged me to report it. Below is the feedback I gave to the drug company based on a questionnaire they sent me. They didn't give any response to what I reported, just said that they received my report and if my vets wanted to discuss it, they could call the company. I guess the owners, who are very much affected by what happened, more so than the vets, aren't important enough to speak with. If you believe your cat was affected in a similar way as mine were, please report it. They need as many people reporting as possible. There should be a warning on the box for vets and owners. Not all cats react to Tresaderm, but when they do, it's serious. Owners should be watching for loss of appetite and lethargy and bring their cat in immediately.\r\n\r\n*****\r\nYour cats Names, ages, weights, sex, are they spayed/neutered?\r\nAxxxx, 6yo, 11lb, M, neutered\r\nBxxxx, 6yo, 9lb, F, spayed\r\n(They're littermates.)\r\n\r\nAxxxx was seen for a general exam at his local general vet on 9/10/25 and was found to have waxy ears (no symptoms). The vet cultured the wax and discovered a bacterial infection. He was given a 7-day course of treatment with Tresaderm starting on 9/11/25. The dose was 5 drops in each ear, every 12 hours.\r\n\r\nLOT XBAH\r\nEXP 2026-02\r\nI still have the bottle.\r\n\r\nAxxxx's appetite started decreasing the day after his 7-day course of Tresaderm ended (9/18/25). On 9/20/25 he started skipping entire meals, which is not like him, he's a very good eater.\r\n\r\nHe had a recheck for his ears on 9/24/25 at his regular local vet and had completely stopped eating by that point. The vet did some blood work. The results came back the next day (9/25/25) and they showed very high liver values and high bilirubin. His general vet sent him to the emergency vet on 9/25/25.\r\n\r\nBxxxx started showing the same loss of appetite as Axxxx and we took her to emergency on 9/30/25. Her liver enzymes were also very high, but not as high as Axxxx's, and she did not have high bilirubin. Bxxxx grooms Axxxx multiple times a day, including his ears, and that's how we believe she ingested Tresaderm.\r\n\r\nAxxxx went to emergency on 9/25/25.\r\nBxxxx went to emergency on 9/30/25.\r\nWe probably should have taken Bxxxx sooner, but we thought she was just stressed because Axxxx was away for several days and that's why she wasn't eating, but it turns out that her liver was affected, too.\r\n\r\nWhen Bxxxx was admitted for the same reason Axxxx was, the emergency vets started to think that the cause for both of them was some kind of toxicity. One of the ER vets had a consult with Poison Control, and there were two cases of Tresaderm linked with high liver enzymes in cats reported within the past 5 years. That particular vet believed that Tresaderm could have been involved. Some of the other vets didn't think it was likely, there were mixed opinions. But I know that my cats didn't get into anything toxic at home.\r\n\r\nI work from home and I'm with them all day. We live in a small apartment, so they're always in my line of vision. We don't keep any plants in the apartment because our third cat (not involved w/ this Tresaderm incident) eats them. We don't use chemicals in the house, and we mop our floor with water (no cleansers) because it's safer for the cats. We're very conscious of any dangers to the cats. They're indoor only. \r\n\r\nWe were asked about Tylenol, and we don't have it in the house. Our other human meds are safely kept in the medicine cabinet. We were asked about garbage and food waste, but we have the type of cans that cats can't open, so there's no chance of that either.\r\n\r\nThe only thing that had changed in their daily life was Axxxx's 7-day course of Tresaderm. Our third cat wasn't affected by the Tresaderm because he doesn't groom Axxxx, only Bxxxx does.\r\n\r\nThe vet that I frequently consult with via video visits (she's not local) believes it must have been the Tresaderm that caused the liver toxicity. She said there's an ingredient in it, an antifungal (thiabendazole), that has been known to cause liver toxicity in humans and dogs. She said that some animals might be more susceptible (genetically) to it than others, and given that my two are littermates, it's not surprising that they reacted in a similar way. She said that they shouldn't ever use Tresaderm again, or thiabendazole (and possibly other antifungals).\r\n\r\nShe said that she's seen cats react to antifungals before (which she commonly prescribes for ringworm). She said the pattern of symptoms is very similar to what happened with my cats. At the end of the course of treatment, the cats begin to show signs of low appetite, just like mine, and then stop eating altogether. They have high liver enzymes, just like mine, and need to be hospitalized for treatment. Again, she said that some cats are more susceptible, and many cats do fine with antifungals. But when it happens, it's very serious and needs to be reported. She strongly encouraged me to report this to the drug company and said you'd want to know about it.\r\n\r\nThey were both on IV fluids, meds to help them clot their blood (including vit K), denamarin, ursodiol, and antibiotics. They each had more than one abdominal ultrasound. They were hospitalized 2 to 3 days the first time, sent home, and they both got worse again, so they were hospitalized another 2 to 3 days.\r\n\r\nAfter they were released from the hospital the second time, they both slowly recovered and are now back to normal. Their liver values were rechecked by the emergency clinic on 10/21/25 and back within normal range. They're both eating normally again. \n BOTH of our cats have been lethargic, drinking excess water, not meowing, and overall being weird. We realized they have been licking it out of our youngest cats ear. We stopped the drops immediately and called the vet. \r\nPlease do not use this product.\n

\n My 4 year old Persian cat had a yeast/bacterial ear infection in both ears, and she was prescribed a 7 days course of Tresaderm. Just 2-3 days after completion, she began vomiting blood, lost her apatite, was lethargic, and was not the same happy cat. She was hospitalized and found to have elevated liver enzymes. \r\n\r\nNone of the vets knew what could've caused such an upset, but after supportive care and recovery, she was back to herself again.\r\n\r\nFast forward 3 weeks to now - she went back to her primary to follow up on her hospital visit and recheck her liver. While examining her, they said the ear infection hadn't quite cleared up in her left ear, and they gave me more Tresaderm for another 5 days. Lo-and-behold, she is now lethargic and having diarrhea, and is showing the same decline she did the first time.\r\n\r\nIt wasn't until I found these reviews here that this all clicked, and I now see that the Tresaderm has been wreaking havoc on my cat. I am stopping this medication immediately and will be seeking an alternative with my vet.\r\n\r\n\r\nPLEASE monitor your animal closely when using this medication.\n

\n Less than 2 days after completing a 10-day course of this medication, my seemingly otherwise healthy cat stopped eating and ultimately experienced liver failure and death. Ultrasounds and liver biopsy were not able to identify any specific cause (e.g. no cancer identified).\n

\n All 3 of my cats went deaf after taking this. This is a known dude effect of Neomycin, an ingredient in this product. Wish I would've known this. Save your cat's hearing. This should be taken off the market!!!\n

\n Tresaderm was prescribed by my cat's vet. This medication got rid of the bad bacteria and fungus in his ears. His ears were swabbed just a few days ago, and the doctor told me his ears are now clear.\n
