\n It runs on electricity. You can purchase the filters in 3 packs from any pet sales vendor, online or in a pet shop. You can periodically clean the unit also. The price of the filters (3) was approximately $15 when purchased, and they were also available directly from the vendor, as was an extra pump. There is a one-year warranty on the pump, but we bought a back up pump in advance. On a different brand we had endless pump issues.\n
