How do NexGard® PLUS CHEWS for Dogs work?
NexGard® PLUS CHEWS are designed to prevent heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis and also to treat and control adult hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum, Ancylostoma braziliense, and Uncinaria stenocephala) and roundworm (Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina) infections in dogs and puppies aged 8 weeks and older. Additionally, these chews effectively eliminate adult fleas and are indicated for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis), as well as the treatment and control of ticks such as Ixodes scapularis (black-legged tick), Rhipicephalus sanguineus (brown dog tick), Dermacentor variabilis (American dog tick), and Amblyomma americanum (lone star tick) infestations for one month. NexGard® PLUS chews act rapidly to kill fleas before they can lay eggs. In laboratory studies, afoxolaner, one of the active ingredients, started killing fleas just 4 hours after initial administration and demonstrated over 99% effectiveness at 8 hours. These chews provide robust protection against fleas and ticks for the entire month.

Keep NexGard® PLUS CHEWS in a secure location out of the reach of dogs, cats, and other animals to prevent accidental ingestion or overdose. The most frequently reported adverse reactions reported in clinical trials were diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, and itching. NexGard® PLUS (afoxolaner, moxidectin, and pyrantel chewable tablets) contains afoxolaner, a member of the isoxazoline class, which has been associated with neurologic adverse reactions including tremors, ataxia, and seizures in dogs with or without a history of seizures. Use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurological disorders. The safe use of NexGard® PLUS CHEWS has not been evaluated in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs. Dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infection prior to starting a heartworm disease preventive. Treatment with fewer than six monthly doses after the last exposure to mosquitoes has not been evaluated and may not provide complete heartworm prevention. Prior to administration of NexGard® PLUS CHEWS, dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infection. At the discretion of the veterinarian, infected dogs should be treated with an adulticide to remove adult heartworms. NexGard® PLUS chews are not effective against adult D. immitis.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving NexGard® PLUS CHEWS for Dogs) to my pet?
Provide your veterinarian with a comprehensive health history of your dog, including any past medical conditions, ongoing medications, known allergies, or previous adverse reactions to medications. This information will help the veterinarian assess if NexGard® PLUS is suitable for your pet. Tell your veterinarian if your dog is pregnant, lactating or has a history of seizures. The safe use of NexGard® PLUS (afoxolaner, moxidectin and pyrantel chewable tablets) in breeding, pregnant or lactating dogs has not been evaluated. Afoxolaner, one of the ingredients in NexGard® PLUS chews, is a member of the isoxazoline class. This class has been associated with neurologic adverse reactions including tremors, ataxia, and seizures. How should NexGard®PLUS CHEWS for Dogs be given/administered?
NexGard® PLUS CHEWS require a prescription from your Veterinarian. Remove only one chewable at a time from the foil-backed blister card and administer the appropriate dosage based on your dog's weight. NexGard® PLUS can be administered with or without food. Care should be taken to ensure that the dog consumes the complete dose, and that part of the dose is not lost or refused. NexGard® PLUS should be administered monthly. The first dose must be given within 30 days of the dog's first mosquito exposure, and the final dose within 30 days of the last exposure. When switching from another heartworm preventive, the first NexGard® PLUS dose should be given within 30 days of the last dose of the previous medication. For optimal performance, give the chewable once a month on or about the same day. If there's a delay in treatment, immediate administration and resuming the monthly dosing regimen minimize adult heartworm development. Monthly use of NexGard® PLUS also controls roundworms and hookworms. Measures should be taken to prevent reinfection with intestinal parasites.

What happens if I miss giving a dose of NexGard® PLUS CHEWS for Dogs?
If a dose is missed, administer NexGard® PLUS CHEWS as soon as possible and resume a regular monthly dosing schedule. Missing doses can increase the risk of heartworm infection and flea/tick infestations.
What happens if I overdose my pet on NexGard® PLUS CHEWS for Dogs?
If you accidentally administer more than the recommended dose of NexGard® PLUS to your pet, you should seek immediate veterinary attention. Overdosing can result in symptoms such as increased side effects, gastrointestinal issues (vomiting, diarrhea), tremors, ataxia (lack of coordination), and other neurologic abnormalities. Severe cases of overdose may even lead to seizures or other life-threatening conditions. If you suspect that your pet has been overdosed on NexGard® PLUS or any other medication, do not hesitate to contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic immediately for guidance and treatment
What should I avoid while giving NexGard® PLUS CHEWS to my pet?
Avoid giving NexGard® PLUS CHEWS if your pet is pregnant, lactating or has a known history of seizures.
What other drugs will affect NexGard® PLUS CHEWS for Dogs?
There are no known contraindications for the use of NexGard® PLUS CHEWS for Dogs. In a well-controlled field study, NexGard® PLUS CHEWS were used concurrently with other medications such as vaccines, antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), anesthetics, sedatives, analgesics, steroids, anthelmintics, antiemetics, and antipruritics. No adverse reactions were associated with the concurrent use of NexGard® PLUS CHEWS and other medications.
NexGard® PLUS CHEWS For Dogs Directions:
- NexGard® PLUS CHEWS are given orally once a month at the minimum dosage of 1.14 mg/lb (2.5 mg/kg) afoxolaner, 5.45 mcg/lb (12 mcg/kg) moxidectin, and 2.27 mg/lb (5.0 mg/kg) pyrantel (as pamoate salt). Follow the recommended dosing schedule provided for prevention of canine heartworm disease and for the treatment and control of roundworms and hookworms.
- Remove only one chewable at a time from the foil-backed blister card. Return the card with the remaining chewables to its box to protect the product from light.
- NexGard® PLUS CHEWS can be administered with or without food. Care should be taken to ensure that the dog consumes the complete dose and that part of the dose is not lost or refused. If a dose is missed, administer NexGard® PLUS CHEWS and resume a monthly dosing schedule.
- Heartworm Prevention: NexGard® PLUS CHEWS should be administered at monthly intervals year-round or, at a minimum, administration should start within one month of the dog’s first seasonal exposure to mosquitoes and should continue at monthly intervals until at least six months after the dog’s last exposure. When replacing another monthly heartworm preventive product, the first dose of NexGard® PLUS should be given within a month of the last dose of the former medication.
- Flea Treatment and Prevention: NexGard® PLUS CHEWS should be administered year-round at monthly intervals or started at least one month before fleas become active. To minimize the likelihood of flea reinfestation, it is important to treat all animals within a household with an approved flea control product.
- Tick Treatment and Control: NexGard® PLUS CHEWS should be administered year-round at monthly intervals or started at least one month before ticks become active.
- Intestinal Nematode Treatment and Control: NexGard® PLUS CHEWS treat and control adult hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, Ancylostoma braziliense, and Uncinaria stenocephala) and roundworms (Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina). For the treatment of adult hookworm and roundworm infections, NexGard® PLUS should be administered as a single dose. Monthly use of NexGard® PLUS will control any subsequent infections. Dogs may be exposed to and can become infected with hookworms and roundworms throughout the year, regardless of season or climate.
Chewables may be broken into pieces and fed to dogs that normally swallow treats whole.

Learn about fleas
Fleas are the most common external parasite found on dogs. Once fleas have infested a host, they begin feeding on your dog's blood almost immediately and can cause itchy, painful skin conditions.
Female fleas begin laying eggs about 24 hours after feeding begins. These eggs will fall off and land in the dog's environment. The eggs eventually become adult fleas that are ready to find a new host and begin the lifecycle all over again.
Ending infestations is a long and difficult process. But preventing them can be done easily in one beef-flavored dose. One chew a month will kill adult fleas before they have a chance to reproduce.
What are the signs of ticks on dogs?
When looking for ticks, you may feel or spot them on your dog’s body underneath their fur. When it first attaches, an adult tick will look like a tiny round bug with eight legs. After feeding, it will swell to look bloated and bluish gray — and it will eventually detach.
