Question:Is it ok for my one year old dog to recieve his rabies shot 2 months earlier then what would be concidered the one-year mark to his first rabies vaccine. i.e. getting it in mid May instead of mid July. Along with getting the dhpp vaccine early also.
Answer:It will probably be fine even though it is more ideal to wait until closer to one year BUT, you don't want to go over one year because, depending on the state, you want this Rabies vaccine to be labeled as a 3-year and if you go over that one year "expiration date" some veterinarians won't label it as a 3-year. (Same for the DHPP for most dogs but for that one it depends on his shot history, intervals, etc)
Question:A feral cat has been in my yard since June 2018. He likes the neighbors female cat. In Oct 2018, the feral cat accidentally scratched my little toe when I spooked it. I was prescribed augmentin and received a tetanus but no rabies shots. It¿s been 7 months and the cat is still around acting normal (eating, drinking water, etc.) I¿m still worried that I was somehow exposed to rabies.
Answer:After almost a year, you should be fine but I am not an authority on the incubation period in humans, so consult your physician about that. Here is a good article, written by another veterinarian, from a site that I trust, about Rabies, incubation periods in animals, quarantine periods after bites, etc: https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951479
Question:Our dog had a rabies shot in Jun-2016. Is his next one (3yrs.) due in 2019 or 2020?
Answer:It depends on a few different things - primarily (1) where you live - certain states still require it yearly, (2) what vaccine your veterinarian used - some are not labeled for 3 year recognition, (3) if this was your dog's first rabies shot, it will always be a one year because the first time his immune system sees it, it can only recognize it for 1 year, so contact the veterinarian that gave the vaccine and they will know all of this.
Question:What Medication can I give me cat at home for rabies? I know the state may not validate the injection if I administer it myself but id like to keep him protected without having to pay $300 a year to a vet?
Answer:You cannot legally purchase a Rabies vaccine - there are many affordable ways to vaccinate a cat (affordable vaccine clinics or telling your veterinarian you can't really afford to have a cat but want to vaccinate it for Rabies - most will work with you, etc).
Question:My puppy was bitten by a crazy dog and after a week as an observation he (the puppy) suddenly change, the way he act, I'm afraid he's being infected I think the rabies is all over his body now, what would I do? Is there a cure? Please help me I don't want to lose my puppy 😢
Answer:No, there is no cure. See your veterinarian as soon as you can for a diagnosis - it may be something else.
Question:My dog is showing signs like aggressive behavior, not eating food, red eye, biting the floors. Vet says I may or may not be rabies. Can be canine distemper. That too can't be treated. My dog has never been in any fight or bites with another dog. Its a kind of infection I guess. I want to try until the last. Kindly advice. The Med I am giving is Neoprofen 2ml, Menosef 500mg, Emset 1.5ml, Belamil 1.5ml.
Answer:We don't use any of those drugs in the United States, so you will need to work with a veterinarian in your country. (It looks like NeoProfen contains Ibuprofen which is very toxic and can kill dogs depending on the dosage.)
Question:From Last week my dog had stopped eating food, pedigrees, bones. I thought he might have fever,so called the vet.He gave him few injections and medicine. But again in few days he became very agrresive, his eyes became red and will bite anyone who try to come near him even family members,he will even bite the concrete. The doctor has told me that he has rabies and he is going to die. Is there any way to save him now? Please I don't want him to die.
Answer:Once they are showing neurologic signs like that, there is no cure - be sure it is Rabies though - if he has been vaccinated, that would be rare.
Question:My dog receive the rabies vaccine first dose on 05/15/2018. She turn 1 year in Feb 2019. I am gojng to travel with her to Mexico April 27, 2019. Can my dog receive the rabies yearly vaccine a week before the 27th of April?
Answer:Yes, that is fine - not too early or anything since she would be due on 5/15/2019.
Question:Doctor, my 4 months pitbull just recovered from parvo . She had her anti rabbies vaccination . she bit me should I get anti rabbies vaccination or not?
Answer:It depends on many factors - contact the veterinarian that gave the Rabies vaccine and your human physician.
Question:I have a cat that I think might have early symptoms of rabies, i have a small open scratches on my hands from eczema and the cat licked my hand, should I be worried?
Answer:Yes, contact your doctor as soon as possible.
Question:I have two dogs age 15 and 8 that are current on their rabies vaccine through November 2nd 2019. Their dog license through my city is due this month and the city is saying that because their license period for the new license would not expire until January 23rd 2020 that I must get current vaccine certificates. I want to know if there is any increased risk in vaccinating them 10 months early
Answer:They should not be able to force you to get a vaccine before your dog needs it. There is always a risk when getting a vaccine (for us and for them) so to give one 10 months early is entirely unnecessary.
Question:How much is a rabies shot
Answer:Prices vary so much based on where you are, you really just have to start calling around near you.
Question:So my 1.5 year old cat got her rabies vaccine today and as soon as we got home she threw up yellow liquid. A handful of hours have past and our other two animals (a cat and dog) are both acting totally normal but my young cat is super restless and is licking herself way more than normal, is not as vocal, and keeps itching herself. I¿m not sure if it¿s an allergic reaction or not and if it is, is it serious enough to warrant a trip to a local vet or will it pass in the next day or so. It¿s so weird to see her act so distraught and not be able to do anything about it.
Answer:They will run a little low grade temperature but if she is still feeling bad today, have your veterinarian recheck her.
Question: I've been feeding a stray black female cat since spring. On October 30th I was putting food out for her and accidentally stepped on her paw. Like a dummy I reached out and she bit me. I went to the Doctor the nest day and got a tetanus shot and put on Amoxicillin. I also went to the health dept. because I'm 65 and let my medicaid kinda slide, so I have no insurance to cover rabies vaccines for myself. They sent animal control out, and the officer basically said, if they take the cat they would have to put it down and test for rabies...or I could watch it myself for 10 days. I didn't want that, so I've decided to just keep feeding it outside on my porch. Tomorrow will be the 10th day. Last night I put the food out and the cat looked like she started to eat, but an hour later, the bowl of food was still pretty full. It was rainy and cold out, but she's always eaten it before. Today, she hasn't showed up at my door at all. I'm freaking out. Not sure what to do. I would have to borrow money from my nieces to get the series of rabies shots I need. I'm worried about myself, but also worried about the kitty. Winter is coming and I can't take this cat inside, even if the 10 day observation period is up tomorrow, I worry the cat might freeze to death. I need some advice from someone who deals with stray cats. I don't want me or the cat to die of rabies. Thanks.
Answer:I'm sorry you are going through all of this. The animal control officer should've told you to keep the cat inside for the full 10 days. Thankfully, Rabies is rare, especially in healthy animals. It is still ideal to err on the side of caution and see your doctor.
Question:My dog got bit by a street dog almost 48 hours ago, infront of his left thigh on the side. We cleaned the wound and gave him rabies vaccine today but all the time he just sleeps. He seems to be confused and afraid. At times he wants patting and others wont come near me. He doesn¿t eat on his own but when i feed him he responds and then eats on his own. He drinks water as well. He gets vibrations all over his body like a sort of muscular spams or contractions and he feels it. He sometimes licks the wound but not occasionally. He rarely moves and when he does it¿s so slow. He usually barks but now he rarely does that when someone rings the door or anything. It¿s been 48 hours like i said, so what do we do? Vets aren¿t an option right now but will try to take to him asap.
Answer:His bite wound may be getting infected and/or he may be having an adverse reaction to the Rabies vaccine - either way, the symptoms that you mention are severe enough that your veterinarian definitely needs to recheck him.
