| Vet Recommendations | Adequan product review: One of the first products of its kind in veterinary medicine, now in use over many years and thousands of dogs and happy dog guardians, my clinical experience with this pioneering injectable FDA approved joint supplement has also been very positive. By injecting this product intramuscularly, one avoids some of the problems with absorption that is occasionally seen with other natural joint supplements given orally. The polysulfated glycosaminglycan solution quickly goes to the joints that need it, modifying the disease process of degenerative joint disease, by inhibiting enzymes that break down the supportive cartilage of the joints, while at the same time increasing the thickness of the lubricating joint fluid, just as shock absorbers do for ones automobile. The results are a decrease in inflammation and joint pain. I have even used this product in cats on occasion with terrific results, which is so important, given the paucity of effective and safe drugs for cats available on the market for arthritis. Results can be seen within hours to days. I usually will follow the manufacturer's recommendations giving it twice weekly for first 4 weeks. Some pets will have long term relief, while others will need periodic injections anywhere from every 2-4 weeks. I will often combine use of this product with omega 3 fatty acids, as well as antioxidants like proanthozone, also available from 1-800-PetMeds, and find that with this multipronged supplement approach, that I often can avoid the need for stronger prescription drugs which may have occasional side effects. The only side effects I have occasionally seen in animals is very rare bleeding tendencies. This is best avoided by having blood work done first by your veterinarian to make sure there are no pre-existing problems of the liver or kidneys that may predispose to this. The only other negative I can see is the need to get your vet to write a prescription for it, and the need for some clients to get over the fear of learning how to give these injections to their pets at home. Once I have shown clients the first time, they often find it quite easy and money-saving to do it right at home themselves. I give this product an overall efficacy rating of a 5, with an ease of use a 3. | Rimadyl is one of the most common non steroidal anti inflammatory medication used in veterinary medicine. It is one of the few medications that are safe to use in most puppies for pain, fever and inflammation. It is also commonly used in pain management in most surgical procedures in dogs. It is also commonly used for long term management of degenerative joint disease and arthritis. Many years ago many were concerned about the side effects of rimadyl, particularly in certain breeds like Labrador retrievers; however, rimadyl has been the drug with the most safety studies of all of the nonsteroidal prescription anti inflammatory medications. As with other drugs of its class, occasionally digestive and bleeding side effects can occur, as well as rarely liver and/or kidney complications. Before using this drug I always recommend blood work, as well as periodic blood work monitoring when used long term. I give this product an overall ranking of 4 out of 5. | Tramadol product review: One of the biggest growing areas in veterinary medicine in recent years has been the increased awareness and treatment of both acute and chronic pain in dogs and cats. Even many veterinary state practice acts now consider pain management a routine component of most surgical procedures in dogs and cast. As with many conditions in veterinary medicine, many of the drugs we often use for chronic pain are actually based on their use in human medicine for similar conditions. That is how we started using tramadol for helping relieve acute and chronic pain in dogs and cats. While many of the other commonly prescribed pain medications of the nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drug class are quite expensive, tramadol is one of the most economic drugs on the market, and it truly has been a godsend to many veterinarians in helping manage both acute and chronic pain for a variety of medical conditions from chronic arthritis and spinal problems, to acute issues like post operative pain management and even acute pancreatitis, urinary inflammation and other acute painful conditions in our dogs and cats. This drug is also typically very safe to use when giving other medications or supplements for pain such as the nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs, cortisone and nutritional joint supplements. The only occasional side effects I have seen are some wobbliness/sedation seen in some sensitive pets, occasional constipation or digestive upset, and it should not be used in those pets with current or historical liver inflammation issues. However most vets, including myself, have found this prescription drug quite effective for pain management either as a primary drug or add on. The single size of 50 mg non-scored tablets can be an occasional problem when dosing smaller animals, but with the development of compounding tablets into liquids, this obstacle can often be overcome. I give Tramadol an overall rating of a 5 with an ease of use a 5 as well. |
