Vet Review | While this collar is marketed to quickly kill fleas, eggs and larvae for up to 8 months and ticks for up to 6 months, I personally have concerns about the safety of the main ingredient propoxar. This powerful cholinesterase inhibitor can cause serious side effects in some pets from digestive upset to respiratory difficulties to neurological problems on rare occasions in my experience and opinion. I am also concerned about human, especially child exposure to such a strong pesticide. While it is a nice benefit that the collar is water proof and works quickly, as well as being an economic alternative for those cost conscious clients, because of my safety concerns and my experience with partial efficacy, I can not recommend this product to my clients. I give this product an overall rating of a 2, with an efficacy a 2, ease of use a 5. | While an economical alternative to the more expensive topicals like Advantage or Frontline, because of safety concerns I cant recommend this product to my clients. Over the years I have seen too many side effects from topical irritation to rare and sometimes severe neurological and/or seizures in some pets. I have also found it to not be as effective in flea control as with advantage or front line. While it is marketed to work against adult fleas, prevent development of flea eggs into larvae and adults, as well as killing ticks for 3 months, once an infestation is in place I have not found this product to be as effective as the competitors in my opinion and experience. One of the nice few benefits I have seen is the killing and repelling of mosquitoes with use of this spot on product. While it is easy to apply and water based, many of my clients have reported irritation reactions as well as greasy fur at the site of application. It is for these reasons that I give this product an overall rating of a 2 with an efficacy of a 2 with ease of use a 5. | For my clients who prefer an effective non-pesticide manner of preventing and controlling fleas on their dogs and cats, program offers a wonderful alternative. When this product first came out, I used to educate my clients on the fact that it was in essence a birth control pill for fleas. The main ingredient lufeneron is an insect growth regulator that does not kill adult fleas, but sterilizes adult fleas and prevents them from laying eggs that develop into larvae and future adults. Each adult flea can lay up to 2000 eggs in its life. It is because of this effect on flea development which makes program such a wonderful preventative. For existing flea infestations, I don't find this product works as well unless it is combined with oral Capstar, which kills adult fleas on cats and/or topical products like Frontline or Advantage. I have found this product both very safe and effective with only rare side effects seen i.e rare digestive upset. It is best given with a meal for maximal absorption which is hard on some kitty owners My overall rating of this product is a 4 with ease of use a 4, taste a 4 and efficacy a 5, in particular for preventing flea infestations before they become established. |
