Vet Review | By combining imidacloprid and moxidectin, Advantage Multi offers the wonderful benefit of broad protection against BOTH common internal and external parasites in dogs and cats. An important area of coverage includes not only adult stages, but the immature stages of roundworms and hookworms, two parasites that are a risk to people if not prevented in our pets. It also treats and controls, and prevents whipworms, which are difficult to eradicate in both dogs and the environment. When applied monthly, it is almost 100 percent effective in preventing heartworm disease in dogs and cats. Additional benefits of treating scabies and demodectic mange and ear mites make this a very attractive product. All of this with the wonderful flea control benefits of the product advantage. The greatest benefit I see with this versatile product is that it takes the labor out of administering a myriad of medications to dogs to control these varied internal and external parasites. I also find that it kills the larval stages of fleas in the home surroundings of treated pets, which is a wonderful added benefit. I have on rare occasions seen topical irritation and sensitivity at the site of application, and even more scarce neurological reactions in hypersensitive pets. The only other downside would be the potential high cost of this product, as well as the need for clients to obtain a prescription from their veterinarian. Overall, however, I have found this product to be an excellent and safe all around internal and external parasite control manager in our dogs and cats. | I love the broad acting antiparasitic effects of this product, which covers protection against a wider variety of pests to our pets than the competition. I feel it works the quickest in terms of flea/tick killing, and I love the fact that it repels fleas and ticks as well. Given that we are uncovering new and emerging tick born diseases, I prefer a product that repels in addition to quickly killing ticks, as well, and thus prevents tick attachment and transmission of disease. We are also now recognizing that mosquitoes can transmit diseases like West Nile virus to dogs, and so the added protective benefit of Advantix on mosquitoes and flies makes it quite attractive, especially for those clients whose pets spend a lot of time outside in the yard in the warmer months, when flies are most active. With this product I see much less fly strike and maggot infestation of outside dogs because of this added benefit. By repelling mosquitoes, we also get less transmission of potential heartworms to dogs. I have found that some smaller breeds of dogs are sometimes sensitive to the permethrin ingredient in this product, occasionally becoming excessively sensitive after application. I also find that although the product is labelled as water proof, on those pets, who are frequently bathed or swimming for long periods, that the product may need to be applied more frequently than once monthly. Some clients also find it somewhat more inconvenient in larger breeds having to apply the product in several spots, rather than in a single spot like its competitor. | In recent years, the company Bayer has developed a revolutionary flea/tick collar for both dogs and cats that is highly effective, especially in flea control, as well as providing moderately effective tick control. The most exciting aspect of this product is that it provides BOTH repelling and killing of fleas and ticks for up to 8 months!! While it is somewhat expensive, it is actually cheaper than purchasing 8 months of Revolution, Advantage or Frontline. In many areas of the country, this protection will last the entire flea and tick season, by just properly applying the collar. Another major advantage over collars developed in prior years (i.e. Preventic collar) is that Seresto is water resistant, and can be worn with confidence, even by dogs who frequently swim. The collar also has no odor, as well as a powdery, soft feel, in addition to leaving no greasy topical residue, like many of the other topical flea and tick products available. The collar is safe if chewed and/or even eaten by the pet, which was a problem with the old Amitraz based collars such as the Preventic collar. The Bayer company has also made it radioopaque, in case an overzealous pet did ingest the collar, so as to allow radiographic tracing and/or location should it possibly get caught up in the intestinal tract. The collar also has unique technology, in that the release of the active ingredients is triggered by friction of the movement of the pet's hair and body heat. The cat collar even has a break-away apparatus to allow for the pet to safely detach from the collar should it get caught on something outside. The reflectors on the dog product also allow the dog to be seen during the hours of darkness. While the collar is very safe for most pets, I have occasionally and rarely seen reactions in sensitive, geriatric or chronically ill pets. These typically involve transient itching, redness and hair loss at the site of adherence to the skin. While most of the time this will resolve on its own in a week or two, occasionally pets will develop enough irritation where the collar may need to be removed. The major rare systemic reactions seen in sensitive pets are mild lethargy and decrease in energy, but even more rare is the development of neurological symptoms, including weakness and/or seizures. I don't recommend that it be used in pets with a history of seizures and/or neurological sensitivity or reactions. While it is amazing for killing and repelling all stages of the flea life cycle quite quickly, it can sometimes take up to several days for the maximal effects to be seen with tick control and prevention. I, therefore, give this product an overall rating of a 4 out of 5, with an ease of compliance and efficacy of a 4.5 out of 5. |
