About this product

What is Adequan Canine?

Adequan Canine (for dogs) is used to control symptoms associated with degenerative or traumatic arthritis. It is an injectable polysulfated glycosaminoglycan (PSGAG) and is the only FDA approved product of its type. Adequan has been clinically shown to help treat the disease while giving relief from pain. It modifies the disease cycle, stimulates cartilage repair processes and diminishes joint damage while reducing the pain caused by osteoarthritis. Adequan requires a prescription from your veterinarian. A syringe is needed, but not included in the package.

For:

Dogs

Benefits:

  • Helps control noninfectious degenerative or traumatic arthritis
  • Good for postsurgery treatment
  • Starts to work within hours and stays in the joint for about three days

How does Adequan Canine work?

Adequan inhibits enzymes that break down cartilage within your dog's joints. It reduces inflammation and increases the thickness of joint (synovial) fluid.

Cautions:

Not for use in humans. Do not give this medication to breeding, pregnant, or lactating pets. Use with caution in pets with kidney or liver disease, or bleeding disorders.

Brand Name:

Adequan (Manufactured by Luitpold)

Generic Name:

Polysulfated Glycosaminoglycan (PSGAG) Solution

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Adequan Canine?

Tell your veterinarian if your dog has any known or suspected bleeding disorders. Tell your veterinarian if your dog has any liver or kidney disease. Tell your veterinarian if your dog is breeding, pregnant or lactating.

How should Adequan Canine be given?

Give this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. Adequan is given by intramuscular (IM, into the muscle) injection. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. If you have difficulty giving the medication, contact your veterinarian. Store Adequan at 68 - 77 F (20 - 25 C) excursions permitted to 59 - 86 (15 - 30 C). Keep this medication out of the reach of children and pets.

What are the possible side effects of Adequan Canine?

Few side effects are seen following Intramuscular injection. Stop giving Adequan and seek emergency veterinary medical attention if an allergic reaction (facial swelling, hives, scratching, sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma) should occur. Bleeding from the nose, blood in the feces, or dark and tarry stools may indicate a decreased ability of blood to clot. Contact your veterinarian if you notice these symptoms. Other side effects may also occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effects that seem unusual or bothersome to your pet.

What happens if I miss giving a dose of Adequan Canine?

Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and give the next one as directed. Do not give a double dose of the medication.

What should I avoid while giving Adequan Canine?

Do not give this medication to breeding, pregnant or lactating animals. Use with caution in animals with kidney or liver disease, or blood clotting or coagulation disorders.

What other drugs will affect Adequan Canine?

Consult your veterinarian before using any other prescription or over the counter medicines including vitamins and supplements.

Compassionate
Adequan is a compassionate treatment for dogs. Our Jacks is doing very well with it. He is a 14 year old lab that has the heart of a puppy. Adequan has given him enough relief that he can enjoy more life; better quality of life. Precious extra time…

Luckily at age 15, Adequan seems to be working
Luckily at age 15, Adequan seems to be working for my Imma Lillie. She has two lux patellas, an arthritic body, and Imma Lillie also has third-stage CHF with a triple murmur. The vet had cited that if it should work for Imma Lillie that I would see visible improvement with her. She has regained some abilities back and seems to have more energy again. I hope that this continues for Imma Lillie, so that it will make it easier for both of us to take her to the final end.

quality of life has returned
Our 5 year old shepherd was having trouble walking, leading to a diminished quality of life. Adequan has restored her mobility and she is able to be a happy dog again--climbs stairs, chases squirrels. I am so grateful for this medicine!

Help with severe joint degenerative disease
Used off label for my cat and has been helping with many areas of arthritis and degenerative joint disease with no adverse reactions. Recommended and used under the instructions of several Vet's that he has seen. It is given by injection, which I give myself to my 17-year-old friend and have been doing so for years. Going to the Dr. every week on a specific schedule is out of the question. Max is an indoor/outdoor, who was born and lived outdoors and poorly taken care of till I rescued him. He loves being outsiders and is safe in our 6 ft. high fences small yaerd, since he can no longer jump over.

Wish we started on it earlier
This has worked on our now 15yo Lab for a year jow, she has slowed immensely, lost muscles due to Osteoarthritis, and we bring a wagon along for her to ride in after short walks so that she dun miss out on tourings which she loves so much. Its our fault not to notice the little signs when she was 13, else I truly believe her condition wld have deteriorated lesser if we had started on this then. If you suspect or the vet suggest onset of arthritis or believes your pooch is high risk of getting arthritis, don't wait, start them on fish oil, synovi G4 and adequan to slow this horrible condition down! I also wish adequan can be made nore affordable as it is for long term use.
