Difficult with the pill
I bought this medication because my cat has trouble with seasonal allergies and I thought a pill in his food would be easier than forcing liquid Benedryl down this throat. First, the pill they give you is 75mg (which is a giant pill) and they have you cut it into eighths. The pill itself is apparently bitter or sting smelling enough that my cat refused to eat it even when I mixed it with his favorite wet food and wet treat. It’s difficult to give him a pill forcefully so this was a waste of money for me. The pill also causes him to salivate and drool/foam at the mouth because it’s bitter. I bought the chicken flavored pill too to try and help with the taste but it didn’t make a difference.

QUESTION
Will the compounded form cause my cat to foam at the mouth, drool, etc.?Current OTC diphenhydramine hcl causes this response. The vet said it could be bitterness.Diphenhydramine seems to be what works best but my cat is frightened of me after all this.
ANSWERS (1)
We have not had reports of side effects such as foaming at the mouth, drooling, etc with compounded diphenhydramine. Perhaps your veterinarian is correct in that the cause is the bitterness of the drug. If so, the transdermal gel may be your best option.
