Rated 5 out of 5 by from Truely Amazing! When I got my 2lb MiKi he was playful but never too much. I called him my anorexic dog because it was a chore to get him to eat and even while training him I had to use toys instead of food. Well, when he went in to get neutered his liver enzyme count was over 1200 when it should be more in between 100-200. We went to the U of M where I found out after a biopsy that he had a liver infection that caused some major damage and they weren't sure how long he would last. My vet put him on Denosyl right away. The change was phenomenal in just a couple days. He ate with out a syringe...not a lot but he was only 1.5 lbs. He is now 3.5 pounds, almost 7 years old and he runs and plays like he is a puppy still. Still to this day when he is not on Denosyl I notice a metallic odor to his breath, he doesn't eat as much and he sleeps a lot more. When he is on it no bad breath, he is energetic and eats a lot, wakes me up early AND his liver count has dramatically dropped down to normal. Thanks to this product I truly believe he is going to get to live out the full length his life was intended to. PS I have to wrap it in something like cheese, peanut butter, or liverwurst for him to take it...AND sometimes I just have to push it down his throat...but well worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product! My 14 yr. old miniature schnauzer has had liver disease for years and has been on Denosyl with great results. Just one difference than the product says, we have had to cut it in half and crush it for years and it still works great! She now has to eat 4 small meals a day and 1/2 crushed goes in 2 of those meals and she still continues to get the benefits and thrive though she still has liver disease of course.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cream cheese! My 14yr old llasa mix has had elevated liver numbers for a while and the denosyl has lowered them to half of what they were, she is not out of the woods but definately an improvement. ***helpful tip for administering. My vet had recommended a small amount of cream cheese wrapped around the pill. Works like a charm. Check with your vet..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Little symptoms - Big problem. Dr. Fred required a blood test before a routine dental cleaning on Kuuipo's teeth. The results came back that his liver enzyme levels were close to 3000 - when they should be less than 118 to be considered "Normal." Dr Fred immediately put Kuuipo on a daily dose of 1) Denosyl, 2) Marin, and i/d dog food for 30 days. The medication was hard to give him at first because the pills are large for a 13 pound dog but I continued because after a week I noticed a variety of changes in his energy level, appetite, and overall outlook. He plays with his toys again. I thought he'd outgrown his puppy stage and wasn't as energetic as he once was. Before he'd only eat small amounts of his food - now his appetite has returned. He listens to my instructions and has a sparkle back in his eye. I'm glad the vet told me about this product and that I have my puppy back! PS After one month his levels are at 177 and hopefully after a second month they will be in the normal range.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from sick kitty my 8 year old cat got very sick and blood test showed her Alt liver enzyme to be over 2000. Normal is up to 130!!! After one week on Denosyl it was 1000 and today, after 3 weeks it is 59. Back to normal range!! She doesn't like having a pill shoved down her throat but the hard part for me is taking away her food at night and making sure she has an empty stomach when I give her pill in the a.m. then I have to wait an hour to feed her. I have 2 cats and the other one cant eat either. But we do what we gotta do for our babies, right? Short story....Denosyl works!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from it DOES work! my then 11 year old beagle mix was scheduled to have his teeth cleaned and the pre-op blood work showed an ALT level (shows liver function) of over 600. it should have been around / under 100. the vet wasn't positive but felt bacteria in his mouth was the cause. after a few months on Denosyl his bloodwork came back within normal range. it was a scary time, but he pulled through. he's now 13 and as spry as ever.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from liver damage in 2006 my then 8 yr old poodle ingested some low grade poisin and was very ill, she had her gaul bladder removed, and was left with very high liver values. My vet suggested denosyl to keep her values in check. My poodle is now 10+ and doing very well. Her liver values are within normal range , and I contribute her good health to a great product called denosyl. Thank you!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Denosyl I would use denosyl or SAMe in any cases of liver dysfunction as it helps support liver function and protects liver cells from cell death. This supplement has been shown in veterinary studies to increase the liver's main detoxifying substance and antioxidant called glutothione, and may even help regenerate liver cells. I find it quite useful in conjunction with milk thistle or related products in this regard, as well as other antioxidants like proanthozone.

Questions

My dog is smallish (16 pounds) and has been prescribed Denosyl 225 mg per day. There's no way she can swallow that huge 225 mg pill, so I have been splitting it. I know it says not to, but that's the only way she can swallow them. Is this OK?

Asked by: Lucys Mom
Thank you for your question. Denosyl should be taken whole and not split or crushed. It has an enteric coating which prevents the release and absorption in the stomach and dissolves only in the small intestine.

Timing with food (cat)

I read the answer where it says: "The ideal situation is 8 - 12 hours after the last meal if possible." This isn't feasible for a cat; especially one that needs to keep eating at this point. It's also not feasible for my other household cats (withholding food). For this medication to work, what is the MINIMUM amount of time I must wait after a meal prior to giving the pill? Are there any formulations that do NOT require a waiting period (before or after food)? Thank you!
Asked by: Chelles
For best results it should be given 1 hour before feeding on an empty stomach.

denosyl - milk thistle

denosyl - milk thistle I have been giving my cat denosyl that I got from my vet and also liquid milk thistle. Are they both the same? The milk thistle is liquid and much easier to administer - should I discontinue one of them?
Asked by: Paul L
Denosyl contains S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe) known for protecting liver cells from cell death and may be useful in cell repair and healing. Milk thistle contains silybin which is known for protecting and promoting the growth of liver cells, fighting oxidation (a chemical process that can damage cells), and inhibiting inflammation. Please consult with your veterinarian with any concerns.

Asked by: JAN
Denosyl is an antioxidant (Sam-e) used for liver health. Denamarin contains the same antioxidant but also includes the ingredient Silybin A+B. This added ingredient (derived from milk thistle) is used to aid digestion and absorption of nutrients from your pet's diet which also helps protect the liver.

Is this supplement effective in treating feline arthritis?

I have read that SAM-E has benefits in humans with regard to arthritis. I have read that SAM-E (Denosyl) helps support the incorporation of sulfate groups into proteoglycans which help maintain cartilage and protect joints. Is there any information on the use of SAM-E in cats with arthritis?
Asked by: Jacob
SAMe is a popular human supplement that has recently been used in dogs and cats to preserve and fortify liver function. SAMe is a molecule naturally synthesized by cells throughout the body. It is formed from the amino acid methionine and is especially important to liver cells. SAMe increases the amount of naturally occurring glutathione in the body. Glutathione is a potent antioxidant that protects liver cells from toxins and cell death. No studies at this time suggest it can maintain carilage and protect joints in cats with arthritis.

My dog was recently diagnosed with a liver shunt.

She is apx 2-2/12 yo and probably a wheaten terrier mixed breed. After doing a bile acid test, her numbers came back very high. She has lost some weight and is on the thin side. The vet has prescribed Hill Science LD and daily doses of Lactulose. The surgery to repair the shunt is very expensive, and I am hoping she will be okay without it. She seems to be improving a little bit each day, but I'd like to know if there are any supplements you'd recommend to help support her health under these circumstances. Thank You.
