What is Capstar Flea Treatment Tablets?

Capstar Flea Treatment Tablets are used to kill fleas on dogs and cats, which begins working within 30 minutes. Capstar will kill more than 90% of adult fleas within 4 hours on dogs and 6 hours on cats, and pets may temporarily scratch as a result of the fleas dying.

For:

Cats (4 weeks of age and older and 2 pounds of body weight or greater) Dogs (4 weeks of age and older and 2 pounds of body weight or greater)

Benefits:
  • Starts killing fleas within 30 minutes
  • Unflavored tablet
  • Safe for pregnant or nursing dogs and cats
How it Works:

The active ingredient in Capstar is nitenpyram, an insecticide. This oral treatment kills adult fleas quickly. Nitenpyram interferes with nerve transmission in fleas, with no adverse effect on your pet.

Cautions:

Pets may scratch as a result of the fleas dying, but it is a temporary condition and not a reaction to the medication itself.

Brand Name:

Capstar (Novartis Animal Health)

Active Ingredient(s):

Nitenpyram

What is Capstar used for:

Capstar is an oral medication used to kill fleas on dogs and cats. It works within 30 minutes but the effects last only 24 hours.

Capstar Flea Treatment Tablets is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 671.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very quick, safe knock-down of fleas! I treat the dog with Advantage II but in hot weather, when the fleas are breeding like crazy, sometimes a whole bunch of fleas will climb on board when I take dog for a walk. Because Capstar can be used with a wide variety of other flea meds, I've been able to treat for occasional flea outbreaks safely. It works very quickly and she's never had a reaction to the med.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally - Flea Annihilation! This has been a bad year for fleas for my dogs, and while Chloe the Rat Terrier isn't too bothered by them, Jack the Jack Russell (yeah, I know, original) gets terrible flea allergies from one bite. The vet wouldn't prescribe cortisone to alleviate his misery, but rather gave me a lecture about flea control. I tried some of the flea repellent applications and they were absolutely useless. After reading the reviews for Capstar, I got some for my kids. The flea problem has all but disappeared, and with applications of a tea tree oil/lavender oil spray to his skin, Jack is finally quieting down. I would definitely use this product again, and it can be used as frequently as necessary to kill fleas.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked Great! So I’ve adopted two stray kittens and we’re covered in fleas horribly!! Bought Capstar and put the kittens in a kennel for 3 hours. Came back to check them and there were dead fleas everywhere!! So completely satisfied!! Gave them a bath and it’s been hours still no fleas. Highly recommended this product. Kittens are so much happier too :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product I was leery about giving this to my dogs but it did the trick. Killed all the adult fleas. I then washed all bedding and used natural flea killer on carpets and put down sea salt to kill any live fleas. It works as long as you take care of the environment. I give a pill about every two weeks and do everything all over again. No flea infestation. The product is a bit expensive for a one shot kill. You cannot kill every flea in the house only control them, they multiply so fast.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dissatisfied Fur Babies I bought two boxes a month ago. One for my cat and One for my small dog. Neither of them have any relief. My poor pets are still just as bad as before treatment. Wasted my money

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Momma and kitten safe! I work alot, and with the number of fur babies my gf and i share, bathing them and combing them and cleaning the house and doing the laundry and basically ridding ourselves of those tiny little demons was impossible to do at once. Capstar gave me the chance to do all the stuff around the house so when i was bathing and coming them, they werent going right back to a carpet full of fleas. I use entirely organinc methods for flea control otherwise but i would HIGHLY recommend this product!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't work I bought this and wasted my money. It did nothing for my schnauzers or lab. I was even giving the pill every 2 weeks and still nothing. I would not recommend this product for anyone.

Can I give to my cats if they have seresto collar on

Asked by: Patty
Thanks for your question. The Seresto flea collar is meant to be used for both flea prevention and treatment. If your cats are still having problems with fleas while using the Seresto collar, you may want to try a different flea preventative medication. As a reminder, the Seresto collar is only effective for 8 months. It is best to use only one flea medication at a time, as combining them may cause unwanted side effects. While using Capstar Flea Treatment, you will want to take off the cats' Seresto collar. The Capstar Flea treatment is meant to be used for a short duration of time as a treatment, but not as a flea preventative medication. If you find the Seresto collars are not working well for your cats' flea prevention, we offer many other medications that may work better such as Frontline Plus or Revolution. I hope this is helpful and hope your cats get better soon!

Can i use this product in conbination with advantix II? My dog is 2 weeks out from the topical treatment and has fleas really bad. Can i use the on her now?

Asked by: Sasce
Yes, it is safe to use Capstar and K9 Advantix II at the same time. However we recommend first using the Capstar as this will kill more than 90% of adult fleas within 4 hours . Capstar is only effective for 24 hours so it is not a long term preventative. So you would follow up with the topical for long term prevention of fleas and ticks.

How often once a month once a wk ?

Asked by: Terri Laprairie
Thank you for your inquiry. Since the effects of the medication only last for 24 hours this medication can be used as often once a day if needed. Capstar is best used to get rid of an initial bad flea infestation. A monthly flea preventative is better suited to protect your furry baby long term.
