Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! We wanted to keep our dog on this same preventative medicine after our vet closed and the new one didn’t carry it. So happy we found it on 1-800-PetMeds!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from it works! This medicine works great for my cat. He doesn't have any ticks or fleas on him. He goes outside a lot. We have 10 acres of land. A tick tries to get him sometimes but it never gets attached. It just hangs on his fur. I never see any worms coming out of his butt. :)) My cat has not allergic reactions to this medicine. I am grateful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great alternative to pills. My puppy wouldn’t swallow Heartgard and Nexgard. I tried to disguise the meds in multiple food and Bella would eat the food and spit out the meds. The topical meds are so easy to supply. No more struggle !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Recently I had to go in the hospital unexpectently. Tiny went to stay with friends. It was almost time for his treatment. While at friends he was exposed to fleas from their cats. When I returned home I did his treatment and with two days the fleas fell off him the fleas were dead. Advantage multi is GREAT!

Works great and no trying to hide a pill or force it on a 70 pound dog who is not cooperating. No flea is as yes, no heartworms and no stress to me or Riot. A win all the way around.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wouldn't use anything else! We have been using the Advantage Multi from 1-800-PetMeds for over 10 years now. Our Vet offers it as well, but it's much more reasonably priced on this site. I love the reminders; the opportunity for new products on the market. Mia Bella is 10 years old and she still acts like a puppy. I am grateful to this company.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use, covers wide spectrum of parasites! After a lot of research I decided to switch my dogs from Trifexis oral treatment to this topical treatment. My dogs never liked the Trifexis, so it was always a big chore to give them their medicine each month. With this topical treatment, I no longer have to fight them. Advantage Multi topical covers everything the Trifexis did AND also protects against sarcoptic mange. My dogs had great checkups this year and tested negative for tick diseases and heart disease.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product! Good product and I'm happy with the effectiveness of Advantage Multi. Right after application my dog runs around like a nut and then rolls around trying to rub it in, I assume. She's a Labrador boxer mix and has short hair so it does lay on top of her coat for a while before absorbing into her skin. Within an hour, it will make my dog feel queasy and all she wants to do is lay down for most of the 1st day after application. By the next day she is back to her old self.

Questions

After the first presciption, will you need the vet to send another with every order?

Asked by: Meltena
We will contact your vet to authorize the medication for you and we request refills. If you are mailing the prescription ask your veterinarian to set your pet up with refills. Once we fill all the medications for a particular prescription we will need to contact your pet's vet or if you have a copy of the prescription you can mail it in.

If my dogs haven't been tested for heartworm, is it still safe to use on them

Asked by: Jlyle
While Advantage Multi is safe for use on dogs with active heartworm disease, your vet will still need to do a heartworm test with a yearly exam to approve the prescription. Heartworm positive dogs kept on Advantage Multi every month will eventually become heartworm free as the adult worms will die in a few years and there will be no new ones growing in the heart. Your vet may add other medications to help your dog during the infection as heartworms can cause issues that affect your dog's health.

My rescue dog was treated for heartworms before I adopted her. I keep her on Advantage Multi but is that sufficient for keeping heartworms from reoccuring? How often should she be tested for heartworms since she had them once.

Asked by: SuzyQ
Advantage Multi, used every month, will prevent heartworm infection. Most veterinarians require a yearly exam and heartworm test to be able to continue the prescription and to confirm the negative heartworm status as nothing in life is 100%. The product is guaranteed by the manufacturer to cover costs of treatment should the product fail in that < 0.01% as long as there is proof of purchase of enough product of the proper size for monthly application and yearly heartworm tests.

One of my dogs weight is 52 lbs. Can I use the dosage that I use for my other dog that is 62 lbs. or do I need to buy the lower dose?

Asked by: Susan
Thank you for your question. Unless otherwise directed by your DVM the medication should be dosed according to your pets actual weight. So your 52lbs dog would get the 20-55lb dose and your 62lbs dog would get the 55-88lb dose.

My 3 mo old puppy is 28 lbs. His dose is due today and all I have is a 9-20 lbs tube. Would that be affective enough or should I be late and wait until I can get the higher dose?

Asked by: Avoree
The 9-20 pound dose would be insufficient to prevent heartworms in your puppy. He would need 2 1/2 times the amount of active ingredient for his size. It would be okay to wait a couple of days and use the proper size for his weight when you get it.

I have a dog that weighs 50lbs. Can I give her the advantage multi I have for my cat? She’s scratching bad and the vet can’t get us in for a week.

How quick does it work for fleas

Asked by: Michele
Thank you for your question. Advantage Multi kills adult fleas through contact, meaning they don't have to bite your dog to die. As fleas come in contact with your treated pet, imidacloprid is absorbed through the fleas skin where it acts on the nervous system resulting in spasm and death. This product does not kill flea eggs or larvae.

Does this make the dog’s hair greasy/oily where applied?  Some treatments leave an oil slick that’s hard to get rid of.

Asked by: Sarah
While you are supposed to apply the product to the pet's skin, you will always get some on the hair as well. The product should "wick down" the hairs to the skin where natural movement and the pet's natural skin oils will move the product over the entire body. I like to apply the product just before bedtime which allows time for the product to spread and to dry. But of course, there may be a little that may stay on the haircoat at the application site, depending mostly on the amount of the product used (the pet's weight) and the haircoat itself (long hair versus short hair, wire coat versus smooth coat, etc). This should go away within a day or two so you should not need to wash the application site (which you shouldn't do anyway for fear of washing some product off) nor have that greasy feeling when you stroke your pet in that area.

Is this safe for MDR1 dogs?

Asked by: Aussiechick
Moxidectin, the active ingredient in Advantage Multi used to prevent heartworms, is safe in dogs with the MDR1 mutation if used for heartworm prevention at the manufacturer’s recommended dose. Higher doses (generally 10-20 times higher than the heartworm prevention dose) have been documented to cause neurological toxicity in dogs with the MDR1 mutation.

What is Advantage Multi?

Advantage Multi is an effective, convenient monthly topical solution for dogs and cats. It offers broad spectrum parasite protection in one easy application.

Advantage Multi for Dogs offers heartworm disease prevention that forgives if you forget. Advantage Multi for Dogs also kills adult fleas through contact, meaning they dont have to bite your dog to die. Additionally, the product treats flea infestations as well as 3 common intestinal parasites that infect and harm dogs (roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms). It also treats a very itchy skin mite called sarcoptes, which can infect people.

Advantage Multi for Cats kills adult fleas through contact meaning they don't have to bite and feed on your cat to die. Advantage Multi for Cats prevents also heartworm disease, an often overlooked concern in cats. Additionally, Advantage Multi for Cats is also the first and only FDA-approved product to kill adult fleas, treat flea infestations, and prevent heartworm disease in ferrets.

How does Advantage Multi work?

Advantage Multi utilizes two effective ingredients, imidacloprid and moxidectin. Moxidectin kills baby heartworms that have been deposited in your dog or cat through the bite of a mosquito, preventing them from growing into adults, migrating to the heart, and causing disease. Moxidectin also kills common intestinal worms by intestinal worms by disrupting nerve transmission resulting in the paralysis and death. Imidacloprid kills fleas through contact. As fleas come in contact with your treated pet, imidacloprid is absorbed through the fleas skin where it acts on the nervous system resulting in spasm and death. Fleas do not need to bite and ingest it through the blood to die like oral treatments require.
