What is Parastar Plus for Dogs?
Parastar Plus is a topical flea, tick, mite and lice treatment developed for dogs. The waterproof solution contains two active ingredients that begin to kill adult fleas, disease-spreading ticks, and chewing lice within 1 hour of application. It also controls mites that may cause sarcoptic mange. The solution continues to prevent infestations for one full month. The easy to use applicator is applied to a single spot to provide flea and tick protection. Gentle enough for use on puppies twelve weeks of age or older.

How it Works:
Parastar Plus contains two fast-acting insecticides, fipronil and cyphenothrin, which start to kill fleas and ticks within 1 hour. The topical treatment is applied to the skin and spreads into the hair follicle, killing adult fleas before they lay eggs, ticks (brown dog tick, deer tick, American dog tick and lone star tick) that may transmit Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and chewing lice for one month. In addition, it also controls mites that may cause sarcoptic mange.
Cautions:
Keep out of reach of children and pets. Consult a veterinarian before using on medicated, debilitated or aged dogs. Do not use on cats.

What is this product used for:
Parastar Plus contains two active ingredients, fipronil and cyphenothrin, which begin killing adult fleas and ticks (brown dog tick, deer tick, American dog tick and lone star tick) 1 hour after application and continue to kill for one full month. Parastar Plus also kills chewing lice and controls mites that may cause Sarcoptic mange, for one full month. Fipronil targets the nervous system, resulting in hyperexcitability and death. Cyphenothrin interferes with nerve cells, resulting in paralysis and death.

Parastar Plus is a non-prescription product.
How this product should be used:
Weigh your dog to be sure you are applying the correct dose for the weight of your dog. The solution should be applied monthly to a single spot between the dog's shoulder blades. Monthly application is recommended for control of flea, tick, chewing lice and mite infestations. Only one applicator per treatment is needed. Repeat application may be made if necessary, but do not apply more often than once every 30 days.
What are the side effects:
Sensitivities may rarely occur after using any pesticide product. Dogs may experience some temporary irritation at the site of product application. If signs persist, or become more severe within a few days of application, consult a veterinarian immediately. If your dog has an unusual reaction to the initial application, consult a veterinarian before repeating treatment. Certain medications can interact with pesticides.
What special precautions are there:
For external use only. For use on dogs and puppies only. Do not use on puppies less than twelve (12) weeks of age. Do not use on dogs or puppies under 4 lbs. Avoid contact with eyes, skin or clothing.
How should I store this product:
Store in original package in a cool, dark place away from children and pets.
Directions:
- Remove one tube from the package.
- Hold the tube with the narrow tip up and away from face and body. Snip off the end at the notches with scissors.
- Turn the tube over and use the opened tip to part the dog's hair between the shoulder blades.
- Firmly squeeze to apply all of the solution to the dog's skin in a single spot on the back.
Tip:
Apply year round every 30 days for maximum flea and tick protection.

we've used this product for 3 years now and have never had a tick. never! and we live in a wooded area with LOTS of deer that come thru our yard. Like I said, not 1 tick :)

Excellent product for ticks
I live in an area that is surrounded by woods. Every time my dogs wander into the woods they come back out with a tick or three. Every since I started using Parastar Plus, I've found two ticks on my dogs and they were dead. I've tried every other product over the years and this was the only thing that works. I have to believe these other reviews are being planted. This stuff really does work and even with English Bulldog's skin issues, they have never developed a rash or irritation. And believe me, I've watched them closely.

Tick preventer
We live in a wooded area in Upstate NY with ticks a plenty. My vet recommended after my dog tested positive for Lyme disease. I became concerned about her bringing ticks into our home and around our children. I have been using this product for over a year and have not found a tick on our dog in that time. I like that this product kills the tick in a short time, making the transmission of Lyme unlikely.

my 2 dogs still had fleas
I followed the instructions exactly, well after one day, the fleas returned. I had to shampoo and comb my dogs until the next application was due. I thought I may have done something wrong. But had the same results the next month, fleas everywhere. i will never use this product again.

Excellent results for ticks
I had a very serious tick problem - my dog brought several in from the yard every day. I had to be constantly vigilant and was very worried about Lyme exposure for my family. My vet recommended this product as she feels it is better than what she sells in her practice for ticks. I was skeptical due to mixed reveiws but nothing else was helping, so I tried it starting 3 months ago and have never seen another tick on my dog or in my home since. Have never had a flea either. My dog has had none of the skin sensitivity or reactions others have mentioned.

Very disappointed
I was hopeful that it would work for ticks b/c of all the other positive reviews; I can only say the ticks are alive and well here in Hawaii and I'm off to try another product. There were a few of the small ticks that were dead, but the big fat ones continued to do what they do - and I had to continue to pick them off.

just plan works for my Lab
I live in MN and the ticks were we live are BAD! I was using another product before this one and I would continue to find embedded ticks on my dog. He still has scabs were I had to dig them out. I have used one application of parastar plus and not one single embedded tick so for. In fact I have only found two on him total and these were just crawling around on his fur. As for fleas I cannot comment on as we don't have that problem. But my suggestion to the posters that have flea problems is to use a flea bath of something to get rid of them and then use a monthly med for prevention. If you continue to have problems I would guess it is you are having a reinfestation problem and need to figure out were that is happening and work on that.

Over a year--so far, so good.
I live in Florida where critters abound and this product protects Gunner as well as any of the others I've used in the past. Additionally, the negative effects on Gunner after application--sleepiness, lethargy--do not occur, which is something I appreciate. After all, the medicine is a type of poison against fleas and tics. For me, the plus is virtually no smell and Parastar Plus does not stain his white coat yellow as the others do.

Do I need to keep my dog out of water immediately before or after using?
I usually wait a day or so to bath after use. I have bathed before use with no problems. Just make sure your dog is completely dry.

Every time I snip the top off I get a spot of the product on my scissors. How do I get the medicine off my scissors?
wash them. I rinse off my scissors after I use them for this product.

Parastar & Comfortis
I am having major flea problems and my vet is recommending Comfortis. Can continue using Parastar with the comfortis so I have tick prevention as well. I WILL NOT USE A COLLAR.
Unless you're using Prastar for anything other than fleas, Parastar is completely ineffective for flea control. I'm changing to Sentinel, mainly because it has the highest rating. You're seriously wasting money on parastar.

SUCCESS?
My Vet recommended this for my SHIH-TZU puppy after revolution. Not sure why, but also had the heartworm shot when I took him in to be fixed. Is not time yet, but the reviews I see seems bad. I live in the county where fleas and ticks are many. So I am wondering if there is something else safe for him that is more effective? I am not sure of PARA STAR PLUS since reveiws are bad. Help 2 weeks until he needs something. Thanks

Can I use paraguard with heartguard chewables?
It is common to use a flea medication such as Parastar along with heartworm prevention. However, we always recommend checking with your veterinarian before starting your dog on any new medications to make sure it is the best choice.
