What is Parastar for Dogs?
Parastar is a one spot, topical flea, tick, mite and chewing lice treatment developed for dogs. The waterproof, topical solution kills adult fleas before they lay eggs, disease-spreading ticks, and chewing lice, and prevents pest infestations. It also controls mites that may cause sarcoptic mange. The easy to use applicator is applied to a single spot and provides flea and tick protection for one full month. Gentle enough for use on puppies eight weeks of age or older.

How it Works:
Parastar contains fipronil, an insecticide that targets the nervous system of pests. The topical treatment is applied to the skin and spreads into the hair follicle, killing adult fleas before they lay eggs, ticks (brown dog ticks, deer ticks, American dog ticks, lone star ticks) that may transmit Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and chewing lice. In addition, it also controls mites that may cause sarcoptic mange.

What is this product used for:
Parastar contains fipronil, a parasiticide that kills fleas, ticks, and chewing lice by targeting the nervous system, resulting in hyperexcitability and death. It also controls mites that may cause sarcoptic mange.
Availability:
Parastar is a non-prescription product.
How this product should be used:
Weigh your dog to be sure you are applying the correct dose for the weight of your dog. The topical solution should be applied monthly to a single spot between a dog's shoulder blades. Monthly application is recommended for control of flea, tick and chewing lice infestations. Only one applicator per treatment is needed. Repeat application may be made if necessary, but do not apply more often than once every 30 days.
What are the side effects:
Sensitivities may rarely occur after using any pesticide product. Dogs may experience some temporary irritation at the site of product application. If signs persist, or become more severe within a few days of application, consult a veterinarian immediately. If your dog has an unusual reaction to the initial application, consult a veterinarian before repeating treatment. Certain medications can interact with pesticides. Consult a veterinarian before using on medicated, debilitated or aged dogs.
What special precautions are there:
For external use only. For use on dogs and puppies only. Do not use on puppies less than eight (8) weeks of age. Avoid contact with eyes, skin or clothing.
How should I store this product:
Store in original package in a cool, dark place away from children and pets.
Directions:
- Remove one tube from the package.
- Hold the tube with the narrow tip up and snip off the end at the notches with scissors.
- Turn the tube over and use the opened tip to part the dog's hair between the shoulder blades.
- Firmly squeeze to apply all of the solution to the dog's skin in a single spot on the back.
Tip:
Apply year round every 30 days for maximum flea and tick protection.

This is AWESOME!
We have 2 German Shepherds and we have given them both Parastar as soon as they were old enough. Even in rural Arkansas where ticks and fleas abound, our dogs stay tick free. We used to get Parastar from our vet, who has since stopped carrying it, and when they sold us the last box they had, I panicked! Nothing has helped our dogs as much as Parastar. They don't even have to wear a flea collar anymore, even at the peak of tick season. Thanks 1-800-Petmeds for saving our dogs from flea-saster!

Awesome product!
I walk my two dogs in the woods and fields by our home twice a day every day. Parastar is absolutely the best flea and tick prevention product I have ever used! I have never seen a flea on either dog and the rare tick that I find is already dead.

Waste of Time & Money!
Our vet recommended this product as a new & better alternative to Advantage because it had Tick preventative also. We had just moved to a new home with woods behind it and we'd already seen a few ticks, so we jumped on the vet's recommendation. What a waste of time, money & effort! It would have been more effective to just rinse the fleas off of them with some water...Parastar is USELESS! Used this stuff for 3 mos because they said sometimes it takes more than one application to see full effectiveness. Ha! 3 mos. later and the dogs & cat went from a few fleas to completely infested with fleas & it didn't deter a tick one. Had to wait a month after last application to be able to switch back to advantage (& used Capstar tabs) to help alleviate some of the fleas from the pets quickly. Within a week, we were flea free on Advantage. We have tried to deal with the ticks by yard sprays & Diatomaceous earth application instead (safer/natural alternative) and have had good results there. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PARASTAR if you actually want flea & tick relief/protection for your pets.

Never seen a flea or tick
We have always looked at this as preventive, not curative. Can't say how it would work where there was already an infestation, but being right next to a park and woods with multiple animals coming through the yard and with many playmates in the neighborhood, we have never even seen a flea or tick.

Don't use!
The vet applied this to my 2 dogs and it didn't make a difference, after flea dips and mutable baths from myself there are still fleas!

First dose July 23, still covered in fleas, both old and new, second dose (less than 30 days) August 18, still covered in fleas , both old and new. Even purchased a flea collar to add to my vacuum cleaner. Also, several baths.

This product is awesome. Have not seen a live tick on my two dogs since I started using this product. I take the dogs for walks through the woods at the park . I did find one a while ago in one of the dogs hair while brushing it, but it was already dead!

Doesn't work
I bought a single dose of Parastar from my vet, put it on my dog according to directions. First of all, his fur turned white where it was applied. When I called the vet, she said it was just "residue". That's fine, but the box should maybe warn people. I thought it had bleached his fur somehow. Also it did not work at all. I'm out $20 and still have fleas. Now I have to go spend more money and try to find something that works. Very dissatified!

What is the amount of product in the tube of parastar? I didn't see that anywhere on the page.
Depending on the size tube you purchased: the 4-22lbs.size conatins (0.023 fluid ounces)
the 23-44lb. size contains(0.045 fluid ounces), 45-88lb. size contains(0.091 fluid ounces) and the 89-132lb. size contains(0.136 ounces). Which converts to the 4-22lb.size = approx.0.69 ml's, the 23-44lb.size= 1.35ml's, the 45-88lb. size= 2.73ml's,and the 89-132lb. size=4.08ml's. Thanks for your question.

I give my dogs Sentinel for heartworm which is suppose to control flea eggs. Is it safe to give Parastar to help with ticks?
Yes - they are okay to give together. You should space them out by a few days or up to a week.

What is the best & safest tick topical treatment?
Currently my 17lb JRT is on Advantage Multi; can he recieve Parastar in addition for ticks? Ilive in New England and MUST have tick control that works!!!!! Please respond soon! Thank you

I put parastar on my dog as directed and it bleached his hair. No other flea treatment I've used has ever done this.
I have never had that happen and my younger dog has black hair at its neck. Are you using Plus or regular. It might make a difference. I use regular.

expiration date
Hello! I am wondering what the expiration date for the Parastar Flea, Tick and Mite prevention medication is. I live in northern Maine; we do not have many months warm enough for fleas/ticks to survive. I'm wondering if I can buy a 6 pack of this product this week, use 3 tubes this summer and save the other 3 for next summer (or 4 this summer, 2 next summer plus a new pack, depending on the weather). Will the product expire before September 2014? Thanks so much!
