What is Sentinel Spectrum?

Simplify your dog's heartworm and flea protection with Sentinel Spectrum, the only beef-flavored chewable to protect against 6 parasites. Given monthly, Sentinel Spectrum prevents heartworms and prevents and controls fleas. Each chew also treats and controls whipworms, hookworms, roundworms and tapeworms. Sentinel Spectrum requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

For:

Dogs (over two pounds and six weeks of age and older)

Benefits:
  • Dogs love the delicious beef-flavored chewable
  • Prevents heartworms
  • Prevents and controls fleas
  • Treats and controls common intestinal parasites (whipworms, hookworms, roundworms and tapeworms)
  • Simple once-a-month administration
  • No messy residue to worry about, unlike spot-on treatments
How it Works:

Milbemycin oxime, lufenuron, and praziquantel are the active ingredients in Sentinel Spectrum which work to control fleas, major intestinal worms, and heartworms. Sentinel Spectrum contains an insect growth regulator (IGR) which kills flea eggs preventing them from hatching into adult fleas. Sentinel may be given along with Capstar, which treats flea infestation.

Cautions:

Mild, transient hypersensitivity reactions, such as labored breathing, vomiting, hypersalivation, and lethargy, have been noted in some dogs treated with milbemycin oxime carrying a high number of circulating offspring (microfilariae). These reactions are presumably caused by release of protein from dead or dying offspring. Do not use in puppies less than six weeks of age. Do not use in dogs or puppies less than two pounds of body weight. The safety of Sentinel Spectrum has not been evaluated in dogs used for breeding or in lactating females.

Brand Name:

Sentinel Spectrum

Active Ingredient(s):

Milbemycin oxime, lufenuron, and praziquantel.

What is this product used for:

Sentinel Spectrum is indicated for the prevention of heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis; for the prevention and control of flea populations; and for the treatment and control of adult roundworm, adult hookworm, adult whipworm, and adult tapeworm infections in dogs and puppies two pounds of body weight or greater and six weeks of age and older.

How is Sentinel Spectrum administered:

Sentinel Spectrum should be given once a month, every month of the year. Preferably, Sentinel Spectrum should be given on the same date each month.

To ensure complete absorption, always give Sentinel Spectrum chewables to dogs either with or immediately after a normal meal. Food is essential for proper absorption of the product into the bloodstream.

Most dogs like the taste of the Sentinel Spectrum chewable and will accept the chewable readily as a treat. The chewables should be administered in a manner that encourages the dog to chew, rather than to swallow the medication without chewing. The chewables may be broken into pieces and fed to dogs that normally swallow treats whole.

Availability:

Sentinel Spectrum requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

How this product should be used:

Sentinel Spectrum should be administered orally, once every month with dosing based on your dog's weight. For heartworm prevention, give once monthly for at least 6 months after exposure to mosquitoes.

What special precautions are there:

Treatment with fewer than 6 monthly doses after the last exposure to mosquitoes may not provide complete heartworm prevention. Prior to administration of Sentinel Spectrum, dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infections. At the discretion of the veterinarian, infected dogs should be treated to remove adult heartworms. Sentinel Spectrum is not effective against adult D. immitis.

Do not use in puppies less than six weeks of age. Do not use in dogs or puppies less than two pounds of body weight. The safety of Sentinel Spectrum has not been evaluated in dogs used for breeding or in lactating females.

What other drugs will affect Sentinel Spectrum:

While Sentinel is safe to use in dogs at risk for MDRI-allele mutation (Australian Shepherds, Collies, Shelties, etc.), unless tested normal, caution is advised if the pet is also being given amiodarone (Cordarone), azole antifungals such as ketoconazole, carvedilol (Coreg), cyclosporine (Atopica), diltiazem (Cardizem), erythromycin (Ery-Tabs) or clarithromycin (Biaxin), quinidine, spironolactone (Aldactone), tamoxifen, and verapamil (Calan). Do not give Sentinel Spectrum to your pet if already giving an alternate heartworm medication.

How should I store this product:

Store in a dry place at controlled room temperature, between 59° and 77°F (15-25°C).

How to Use
Directions:
  • Give Sentinel Spectrum once a month on the same day of each month year-round.
  • For proper digestion, administer Sentinel Spectrum to your dog immediately after or with a normal meal.
  • Sentinel Spectrum is for use in dogs only. Do not give to cats.
  • Watch your dog closely following dosing to be sure the entire dose has been swallowed.
Tip:

Do not remove Sentinel Spectrum from the wrapper until ready to give to your dog.

Sentinel Spectrum is rated 3.8824 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Covers a lot of parasites!!! Please learn to read people! Sentinel Spectrum is a great product. It prevents heartworms (milbemicine oxime, which is a derivative of ivermectin that is in heartguard and tri heart plus), stops fleas from reproducing (lufeneron, remember Program?? Same drug, and kills tapeworms which often come from eating fleas (praziquantel). In addition, it also gets rid of roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms!!! No, it does not kill adult fleas or kill or repel ticks, but it does a lot for a good price!!! You can add another product, regularly comb and bathe, use natural flea and tick repellants, or a combo to keep fleas and ticks off your dog. Sentinel Spectrum works exactly as designed!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great but does not have tick protection I'm writing this review because I've read too many other reviews that gave stated this product has some how controlled ticks. It does NOT. This is the only product my 10-lb. Maltese can stomach. Prior treatment with the combination of Heartguard (heart worms..) and Nexguard (flees AND ticks) proved too much for his system. Within hours of that combination he had severe diareah and vomiting. The Sentinel Spectrum works for my dog breed because he is small, has fine white short "hair", with a pinkish skin. In other words it is easy for me to see ticks on him, which I check for after each outing. I also live 10- miles from Lyme, Ct., so I know how to be vigilant about these nasty little creatures. In other poster's reviews they stated they no longer had a tick problem. Sentinel Spectrum does not prevent/treat/stop ticks at all. Also, it does not kill adult flees. It does however kill laid flee eggs. I love this product for my breed of dog. Unfortunately if you have a large, or even small very furry dog do not count on this for tick prevention or adult flee killing. But, if you are like me with dog who's fur/skin can easily be checked it's a great product!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Sentinel Spectrum I have a Golden Retriever that never turns down food, but she Does Not like the Sentinel Spectrum. She hates the taste. I have tried to hide it in with other food and she does not like it. She has been on it for about 2 years. I think it's time to change to another product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great price and more important, fleas are gone! Switched to Sentinel spectrum after Trifexis was making our dachshund sick to his stomach. Our Chiweenie would hide when she saw the package. They both are taking the Sentinel spectrum without a fuss and it's working wonderfully!! We haven't seen a flea in a long time and have had no problem with heartworms etc. Price is a lot better as well!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I switched from this product from Trifexis to try to save money. I now have a flea problem!! This DOES NOT work for fleas. I just pray it has worked for heartworm preventative for the next test that my dogs will have. I'm going back to Trifexis.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product so far I have 3 Schipperkes and a Lab. I need a heartworm pill that also kills tape worms. So far, it has been working. No side effects. I have no problem with 3 of the furkids taking it. However, one of them I have to wrap the pill in lunchmeat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use, dog loves taste I like this particular tablet as it is easily chewed without me having to monitor that my 9lb poodle mix picks up all the "crumbs". This is also a great product as it protects against fleas and ticks, too. So I only have to give my dog one tablet monthly then just make sure one bath a month is one using flea shampoo for extra protection during flea/tick season. In the winter I just use the tabs. Works great, my dog has a clean bill of health every year from the vet.

Q&A

What can I give my dog for tick prevention?

I gave my dog his second round of Sentinel Spectrum. It seems ticks are the only issue spectrum does not cover. I cannot find a tick treatment by itself. It seems there are only flea and tick or flea, tick and mosquito treatments. If i gave my dog a treatment for flea and tick, is that too much flea treatment? I ask because flea treatment is provided in the sentinel tablet already.
Asked by: Jimmy
You can try a Preventic Collar, which only does ticks, or one of the several flea and tick treatments, such as Frontline Plus, K-9 Advantix or Nexgard. Since the flea treatment in Sentinel Spectrum only sterilizes the fleas, it is safe to use a different product that actually kills the adult fleas.

Can I use a preventic collar with sentinel spectrum?

Asked by: Tric
Hi, Unless someone else at this site has already called the Sentinel Spectrum help line and posted the answer; that is what I'd do first. Should you wish to be really certain, write down all the ingredients of each product. Then, call a University Veterinary School and get their input. I hope this post helps.

how does sentinel compare to trifexis

Asked by: Joe
You may not be aware that 1-800PetMeds.com does have checkboxes under each product for product comparison. I've used both products for my rescued male & female papillons. I, too, want my dear doggys to have the absolute best I can get for them. I liked the fact that their was flea egg & flea larvae protection with the Sentinel Spectrum. This and the wild price price difference were my deciding factors between the two. I hope this post helps.

I have two dogs both under 25 pounds, can I just buy the dose for 25-50lbs. and cut it in two pieces?

Asked by: Cooper
No! Just as with Rx meds. for humans: unless any medication has a divider slash mark embossed onto the pill or chew, it will not give the med's full advantage when it's separated. I hope this helps. Ask your vet for verification of what's written in this post.

Use with FrontLine Plus or Bravecto?

May Sentinel Spectrum be used with FrontLine Plus or Bravecto? I am currently using Iverhart Max, but would like to add the protection against whipworms that Sentinel Spectrum provides. I looked at Sentinel, which this site says can be used with FrontLine Plus and Bravecto, but that has no tapeworm protection. Thank you.
Asked by: Nick
My vet said you can use a flea/tick topical with Sentinel Spectrum. I have used Frontline for several years but I found that it is now ineffective. Maybe the dog gets immune to it. I use Advantix for fleas and ticks. Bravecto is brand new so I don't use anything brand new until I get reviews for awhile on how it works. Sometimes new products have bad side effects.

WHAT IF MY DOG WEIGHS MORE THAN 100LBS

HE WEIGHS 120 GERMAIN SHEPARD
Asked by: WOLFGANG
You would need to give the dog enough meds to fall within his weight, i.e. give pill for up to 100lbs and get an additional size that will add up to your dog's weight so you are actually giving 2 pills instead of just one.
