What is Heartgard Plus Chewables?
Heartgard Plus is a real-beef chewable tablet for dogs that provides protection against heartworms, and treats and controls roundworms and hookworms. Heartgard Plus is given monthly and requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

How it Works:
Heartgard Plus contains ivermectin, a broad-spectrum antiparasitic medication used to prevent heartworms. Heartgard Plus also contains Pyrantel Pamoate, an anthelminthic, used to prevent roundworms and hookworms.
Studies have indicated that certain dogs of the herding breeds are more sensitive to the effects of ivermectin administered at elevated dose levels due to the MDR1 gene. Dog breeds that may be affected include Australian Shepherd, Australian Shepherd Mini, Border Collie, Collie and English Shepherd.
Cautions:
Can cause sensitivities in herding dog breeds. Heartgard Plus chewable tablets should be chewed, not swallowed whole. The tablets may be broken into pieces and fed to dogs that normally swallow treats whole. Make sure that your dog eats the entire dose. It is important to give your dog Heartgard Plus every month year-round. Do not skip winter months as your dog may become infected. If you miss than two months of dosage, please consult with your veterinarian as to whether to continue medication.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Heartgard Plus to my pet:
Tell your veterinarian if your pet has ever had an allergic reaction to the medication, any of its individual ingredients, or to beef.
How should this medication be given:
Give Heartgard Plus exactly as directed by the veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Heartgard Plus chewable tablets must be chewed. They should not be swallowed whole. Use with caution, Collies and other herding dog breeds have been known to have adverse reactions to ivermectin administered at elevated dose levels. Heartworm testing should be performed prior to the start of prevention therapy. If the animal is off Heartgard Plus for 6 months or less, start the medication and test after 6 months since microfilaria, that take 6 months to mature, will result in a positive test result. Store Heartgard Plus at room temperature. Do not remove the tablet from its wrapper until ready to give the medicine. Keep this medication away from children and pets. In addition, Heartgard Plus has shown a wide margin of safety at the recommended dose level in dogs including pregnant or breeding bitches, stud dogs and puppies aged 6 or more weeks.
What happens if I miss giving a dose:
Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. Do not give a double dose of the medication.
What should I avoid while giving Heartgard Plus to my pet:
Because humans can contract hookworm from animals, it is important to maintain good personal hygiene. It is also important to eliminate fleas on the pet and in the household and to not feed the pet rodents or uncooked meat or fish. To prevent reinfection, daily cleanup of stools is recommended.
What are the possible side effects of Heartgard Plus:
Side effects of Heartgard Plus are rare at the recommended heartworm prevention dose. Higher doses in dogs may cause tremors, dilated pupils, and loss of body weight and death.
What other drugs will affect Heartgard Plus:
Do not give Heartgard Plus to your pet if already taking another heartworm medication.
Directions:
- Give Heartgard Plus Chewables once a month on the same day of each month year round.
- Heartgard Plus Chewables are for dogs only. Do not give to cats.
- Heartgard Plus Chewables should not be swallowed whole.
- Chewables may be broken and fed to dogs as pieces, or crumbled and mixed with food.
- Watch dog closely following dosing to be sure the entire dose has been swallowed. If it is not completely swallowed, give one more full recommended dose as soon as possible.
Tip:
Do not remove chewable from its wrapper until ready to give to pet.

If the foil had a small tear & the chew is dried out and hard, is it still effective?

Griff is a Chesapeake retriever he weighs 115 is the box for large dogs 50-100 is that enough meds this is getting expensive?
You would need to provide Griff with the proper coverage based on his current weight, the 50-100lb dose alone would not suffice. He would also need the additional 1-25lb pack as well.

No, Heartgard Plus is a real-beef chewable tablet for dogs that provides protection against heartworms, and treats and controls roundworms and hookworms only. Does this require a prescription from my vet?

Overdose
I had given my dog his heart guard yesterday
My daughter gave him trifexis today which she didn't realize had heart worm preventative in it
Will this be extremely harmful for him

Since the active ingredients are different for the 2 medications, there shouldn't be a problem with over-dosage.

Dosage concerns
My dog is 9 weeks old and 3 pounds. He is a toy schnauzer. How can the dosage be the same for him as for a 25 pound dog?
Yes. The medication is very safe and since it is a beefy chew tablet, you can not be sure that the medication is evenly distributed in the chew so for proper dosage, give the entire chew tablet for the up to 25 pound size.

does it kill roundworm eggs
Heartgard Plus will kill adult roundworms, but not the eggs that are passed in the stool.
